i didnt know what the hell to call this thread but i've always wanted to know if things where i live are the same where others live...

like small things...

the colour of the fire hydrants here are RED... and thats it... what about where you live?
and how bout police cars... what kinda cars are the police driving where you live?

anyway if anyone else has small things they would like to know about other countries or whatnot here's the place to ask them..

São Paulo, Brazil:

It's rare to find old fire hydrants on the streets today (they are red), now they are underground. Police officers use a grey and white uniform, and the cars are grey, white, with some details in red and black. All taxi cabs must be white. Uh... anything else I could say? Does anyone have any question about either São Paulo or Brazil?

Fire hydrants are red here as well. Not underground though. Policemen wear any number of colors on their uniforms. I've seen blue, black, white, and a dark khaki color. It all depends on what kind of cop you're talking about... local, state, county. Cop cars... where to begin... Chevy Caprice, Ford Interceptor, Chevy Camaro, Hummer, and many more I can't think of.

OK, here are my personal records:

Coldest day I had in Brazil was a 0 celsius (about 32f), in a winter day about 3 years ago
Hottest day was in Rio about 7 years ago, 49C (you do the math to fahrenheit)
Deep into the south of the country it can get to -10C, -15C, it rarely snows because our winter is dry, not because of the temperature.

And what are the MANY stories? I'd like to make sure some false myths about Brazil are ended.

damn 49C is the hottest day....
thats insanity...

well some of the stories are usually just about Carnival and the brothels there...
he was basically comparing as to how Canadian woman differ from the woman of Brazil..

and when he went back there to visit some family for a couple months he found out that many of his friends were killed due to drug dealing...
he said it had gotten really bad in his area... (not saying Brazil is bad for drugs... everywhere is bad for drugs, but im just repeating what he was telling me)

OK, the thing is, the whole "City of God-Tarantino" like violence, it's not real, it's not like that. If they were killed because of drug dealing, that means they were messing with the WRONG kind of people. You'll find as many drug consumers as anywhere else in the world, the problem is that the drug dealers often control some selling areas, and they result to violence to protect their selling points. This happens more often in Rio, where the city is surrounded by them. But if you have a fully functional brain you'll avoid Rio, or at least those creepy areas. In Sao Paulo, where I live, the same happens, but it's usually in a distant part of the city, so it's not that bad. Again, I'd recomend not to visit Sao Paulo, as it's not a turistic city. Violence here usually has a reason, if someone's is murdered, he was either being robbed and did something foolish like fighting the guy; or he was involved in drug dealing and did something stupid. Spree killing and serial killers are VERY rare, I remember there were about 4 or 5 in the last 50 years, and only one of them killed more than one person at a time.

Carnival (aka carnaval), yes, it is a 5 day orgy (friday night to wednesday), but it usually dosen't envolve violence or drugs. Just grab some condoms and you'll be fine. OK I'm kidding, it's not THAT "bad" (or should I say good), but I garantee, if you WANT to have sex, you WILL. It's like mardi gras (cant spell it), but it's on the entire country, and it lasts 5 days. There are some traditional cultural celebrations which I couldn't easily explain, as you'd have to know a lot about our history and culture to understand it.

The women in Brazil are different, but that's because people here are different. Latin american people (except argentine people) are more friendly, more... how can I say it... well you get the idea. People from north america and europe are more "closed to themselves" if you compare to us.

Brothels, you'll find it anywhere, sure, same thing as any country in the world. I never went to any of these, it's against my principles to pay for sex.

ya i never meant to make it sound like Brazil is such a violent place... i mean people are killed over drugs where i live too...
its like that almost everywhere....
I think it was just a big thing for him because he grew up with these guys and they were his good friends...

Carnaval we've heard so much about and he continues to tell us that we have to come.... he said that there's no way we would leave there without getting laid a couple of times.... especially because we're Canadian... (i dont get that! haha) but he says that the girls down there are more aggresive and fun to be with...

he said that most Canadian girls are too into themselves and expect too much from a guy from what he was used to back home... he said here he's known as a foreign kid and some girls wouldnt give him the chance i guess... whereas that wouldnt happen back home....

but i love this kid to death...
he's one of the funniest guys i know and totally says things like it is...
im trying to think of where he lived...
Sao Paulo sounds familiar but im not sure now....
i'd have to ask him...

They messed up with the wrong kind of people, that's all. Sad when it happens.

The fact you're Canadian has nothing to do with it, I don't get it either...
More aggressive? Don't know about that...

Not only Canadian girls, Canadian people are too into themselves, too cold and formal and stuff. Not only in Canada, it's like that anywhere in Europe, Asia, and in the american continent above Mexico.

Ric - how much are tickets to the football matches in Brazil? I'm thinking of visiting for a few weeks sometime in the next couple of years and would love to catch a couple of Championship games. Is it difficult to get tickets or is it a pay on the gate thing?

At the moment the cost of getting there from the UK is putting me off a little - is it cheap to eat, drink and get a decent hotel room - was thinking of visiting Sao Paulo or Rio.

Any help most appreciated

Depends on the game. If you want to see an international match, it's about R$80 (cheapest seat) to R$120, that's US$28.60 to US$42.90, maybe more depending on where the game is or where you're seated - last time I went to see a game, it was Brazil vs Bolivia, and I payed R$80 to the cheapest seat. If you want to see a regular soccer championship game, it depends on where you're going to be seated. A ticket in the upper seats is usually around 10 to 15 (3.6 to 5.4 dollars), but I really DONT recomend getting those seats, as they are usually used by hardcore, hooligan like fans. I'd recomend a lower, closer to the field seat, which would cost something around... I dont know, maybe R$50 or R$60, about 18 to 20 dollars. So, avoid at all costs seating in the so called "GERAL" seats. Do not buy the ticket on the streets, buy it on the authorized selling points. Usually the traveling agencies buy tickets to tourists and take them to the stadiums, but I don't know how much they charge.

Yes, things are quite cheap over here. In Rio, things a little bit more expensive as it's a touristic city. I'm not so sure what you could do over here in Sao Paulo, as it's NOT a touristic city at all, so I'd recomend coming to Brazil only if you are one of those travellers who enjoy getting lost, doing stuff all by themselves, and visiting weird, different places, and enjoy traveling around with nothing more than a backpack and a tourist guide in an adventurous kinda way. If you are the "tour bus guide"kinda tourist, you'll probably not enjoy it.

In Cleveland, OH, our fire hydrants are dark red/brown and above ground. That are the classic 3 plug style.

Our firemen use classic red trucks.

Our cops wear all black uniforms and drive white-with-some-black Crown Vics.
(In fact, most of the cities fleet of vehicles is made up of Fords. We've got at least a couple Ford planst in the immediate area).

The temperature can get into the mid-90s (don't think we've hit 100 for quite a while) in the summer, and has dropped well into the single digits in the winter (then you add windchill for -15 to -20). Where I live, snow isn't too bad, but about 20 miles to the east, they usually get completely hammered. Its a lovely thing we call Lake-Effect. Any storm coming out of the Northwest runs across Lake Erie, gathering moisture. It just so happens that the east side of Cleveland lies on one of the widest parts of the lake (in a NE to SW direction), so they often get 2-3 times more snow than us.

Ah yes, firetrucks. My town uses a really cool black and red combination (black in the top half and highlights; red in the bottom half). A neighboring town uses ones that are a lime green color. My wife and I like to tease that they're not ripe yet. Another town uses the classic red.

I've seen lime-green before.
Long, long time ago, when I was in 2nd, maybe 3rd grade, our school would get these 4 page things for us to do. I wish I could remember the name.
On the front, and in the middle (it was really 1 piece of paper folded in half) they had current events stories. Then, on the back there were questions/games about the stories.
I want to say the name was Weekly Reader...but that might be something else.

Anyways, I remember one talking about making lime-green the standard color for fire trucks. It would be a stronger standout, visually, than the classic red.

(I also remember one where they talked about the 1988 election. They wanted to know who you'd vote for. Not knowing anything about politics...I picked Jesse Jackson.)

It was YOU! You're the one that gave him his one and only vote (even if it wasn't legitimate)! You're the reason he keeps wanting to run election after election! He feels that if he can just get that one vote it will all be worthwhile! AHHHHH!!!!!

JK

Sadly, my brother and I (both not legal to vote) were sitting in a hotel room in Rockford, IL, watching as the voting tabulations came in back in '88 and cheering as the votes mounted up for GHWBush. We were jumping on the bed. Ah, youthful ignorance. A little over two years later, I was dreading the idea that a war was going on in the Middle East and that, if it didn't end soon, I might be pressured into joining the military and going to war when I graduated from high school. Not my cuppa.

Trust me, joking or not, I regret even mentioning the whole thing. I now understand what a power and money hungry exploiter that man is.
But let's not start into that kind of discussion.
