PM sent to anyone who’s asked btw

Also just FYI for everyone, I’m renaming all the currently available files to “V1” ahead of season 2 just to delineate the difference between them and the eventual post-season 2 versions. I’d like to keep them available for archival purposes and I figured this would be less confusing. The old “V1” thru “V5” were just early drafts anyway, consisting of very minor tweaks and technical fixes between them; ultimately the same creative choices refined towards what’s stood for the past year.

Another way of looking at it is that, if I knew I would be making so many ‘versions’ then, I probably would have started with the naming conventions “v0.1” to “v0.5” leading into what is now V1.

I’m anticipating with the soundtrack pool expanding upon season 2’s release (as well as whatever new contexts might arise) I’ll be approaching the whole thing a little differently, with entire song / tone choices being different enough to warrant being called a new “version” and not just an iteration on the previous.

I don’t know if this makes sense or will ultimately be necessary, but yeah.

Things I’m looking out for in season 2 regarding this edit:

  • A theme or motif for K2
  • A theme or motif for Yavin 4
  • A theme or motif for Krennic
  • Possible Rogue One OST synthesis. Reversion to some of the original score might be in the cards here, Britell and Gilroy know they are producing a lead-in to an already made movie and might make the connection to it themselves. I do miss the real Stardust reprise and would reinstate it anywhere if needed.

If you watch one episode of Andor per week starting next week, you’ll be right on pace to start season 2 when it releases, and of course barrel right on into this fan edit as a capper over the following three weeks.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

Hi,

Any chance for a link! 😃

Yeah, if you read the thread and follow the instructions laid out by NFBisms you’ll likely get a link…

PM FOR LINK

In general, simply sending a PM to the project creator (unless asked otherwise) is the default way of asking for fan projects on here…

❕ I have found a Fan Edit / Preservation I am interested in - but I don’t know how to get / acquire / download it? ❕

❗ The correct way of how to ask for a fan project on the OriginalTrilogy•com ❗ (Read this before making ‘link request’ posts!)

Good luck with it. 👍

Hopefully the project threads will soon get back to being discussions about the actual projects themselves - queries, feedback, reviews, exchange of ideas, suggestions for future versions etc - and not be full of endless & unnecessary ‘link request’ posts.

I like Rogue One but it’s definitely flawed and a little overrated. This edit however, makes the film feel so much more atmospheric and intimate, trimming a lot of the quip-y stuff and fan-service but not entirely removing some of the humor. Genuinely my favorite way to watch the movie now, and the re-foleying is amazing.

I watched the edit with headphones so I just wanted to point out moments (nitpicks) where the sound effects/score could be improved:

Episode 1: Jedha

  • The transition from the title intro to Krennic’s ship is abrupt as if it was cut off or the volume suddenly turned down. I think you should let the intro music play out until it fades. Also, I think you should keep the second shot of Lah’Mu as it compositionally looks better as an opener than the third (this is subjective).

  • The Yavin holotable room might be too quiet and isolated. I’d say add some faint ambient sounds like a few footsteps, button presses, or more electrical sounds since there’s a bunch of screens.

  • For the shot of Jedha after K-2 drop’s Jyn’s bag, the TIE and shuttle sounds don’t linger long enough and there aren’t enough distant TIE sounds like in the movie. Also in the same shot, I think there’s a few leftover footstep sounds that play over it lol

Episode 2: Stardust

  • A few short-lived and sometimes crunchy sound effects for ships like the U-wing and TIEs on Eadu.

  • The score on Eadu might detract from Galen getting bombed but idk for sure.

Episode 3: Rogue One

  • Yavin room scenes are a bit too quiet and isolated again especially with so much foot traffic.

  • When the cargo shuttle is cleared for entry, the music doesn’t gradually increase in volume (I assume you meant for it to), it seems to lag.

  • The cargo shuttle landing gear could use a sound effect when it comes out (extremely minor thing).

Overall:
Extremely well done. In general it’s really only some of the ships/starfighter sound effects that stand out the most, but it’s understandable since I assume getting the Star Wars sound effects you want can be difficult. I would love to help if possible, I own all modern Star Wars games (Jedi, Battlefront, Outlaws) and know where to record specific sounds if that interests you. As for the score, it’s very well integrated, but I think there could be certain parts where the original score can be restored (unless Andor season 2 has more fitting music). Great job on this.

Great notes! I’ve definitely been thinking similar things - if not more - about the foley work. I tried to get away with less back then and could only do spot-checks throughout the entire two hours for so long before I burned out.

But with this as a solid base that I’ve now spent more than enough time away from, I am excited to polish that aspect off. Especially as the season 2 score comes out and we’ll have all the thematic pieces / motifs to chew on. Should make the work a bit more creative and cohesive, rather than just technical and speculative. I’m excited!

So, turns out Nicholas Britell isn’t returning for season 2 (mentioned here) outside of a few tracks; Brandon Roberts is picking up composing duties.

I’m sure the general sound will stay audially & thematically consistent to what Britell established, but it has inspired me to re-open the project files and mess around using some of Roberts’ previous work. Obviously his actual score for Andor season 2 will take precedence for use in the final project, but I am already inspired to use some of his other stuff. The places he is different from Britell open up what exactly “Andor sounds like” and that has exciting possibilities for this.

Came here to see your thoughts on the Britell > Roberts shift. This could be interesting!

Happy to see you’re getting excited to start work on this project again! Fingers crossed Season 2 ROCKS & it doesn’t throw any huge wrenches into your future re-edit.

And while I was here, have you given any thought to using the Deepfaked versions of the Tarkin & Leia scenes? I know they originated on YouTube & I think Hal9000 incorporated them into his Rogue One re-edit. They really do look a lot nice than what we got in 2017.

I actually already used the deepfaked versions! I forgot to mention it in this thread, but it should be in the IFDB listing

A thought for your next round of edits on this… rewatching the official 4K release… I see the opening of each episode is as follows:

-Recap
-Lucasfilm logo
-New Star Wars logo (the helmet/droid thing)
-Andor title card
-Episode begins

Your Rogue One edits skip the New Star Wars Logo. Perhaps you’ll want to reintegrate them for uniformity? I’ve come to really like those logos… gets me all amped up lol.

BTW, your recaps are great. Good info, good clips, well-edited to match the style of the Andor recaps!

I think i’ve figured out the Yavin ‘theme’ now. In Vol. 1 ‘He’s Getting Away!’, there’s that one motif that appears as the temples are revealed. I wasn’t sure it was a motif until it appeared in the latest episodes

So far it reappears in Vol. 3 ‘Yavin’ and ‘He’ll Be There When You Need Him’. It’ll probably show up more in Vol. 4. Wondering if you’ve caught that yet

Hello, would I be able to get a link to this if it’s not too much trouble? I’m very excited to watch!

Thanks so much!

Posted this over on fanedit.org, but figured since there’s more activity on this forum, I’d post here, too.

Just finished Andor, and decided to immediately follow it up with your incredible fan edit. It plays extremely well, really like a continuation. Really, just marvellous work.

Though I do have maybe one note off the top. It’s funny, because the way you have it is how it was originally, but I think given how Andor plays out, his going from confirming the intelligence on Kafrene to finding Jyn just feels a bit fast. I wonder if it might make sense to start Episode 13 with Cassian’s introduction. Then Bodhi. Then maybe cut to Jyn in prison/being transported, with the flashback slotted in there, maybe slightly chopped up. I think that might smooth out the pacing a bit at the start, and would also kind of fit better with the established use of interspersed flashbacks in the first arc of Andor season 1, as well as season 2 episode 10. Might also make it feel more like the story is being handed over from Cassian to Jyn. Of course, all this might just be me. And perhaps it’s too complicated to bother with anyway.

I’ll also second Onhisbacko on adding in that new Star Wars logo at the start (along with a previously on for episode 13, of course). Could also make sense to copy the format of season 2’s BBY title cards over black and have it go BBY0 in blue letters over black instead of how it is in the movie.

Incredible finale to season 2; complete masterpiece of a show. I’m fighting the urge to watch the current edit/original Rogue One until your cut is finalized.

Just watched the current versions of your edit – fantastic!! It works so well as a finale for the show. I actually would echo the comments made above regarding changes. I can’t wait to see your final version!
