ANDOR - Disney+ Series - A General Discussion Thread — Page 28

So I tried out watching Rogue One immediately after the show. I know I said it improves it before and it does, but it had strange results.

The first half of Rogue One, which I think is weak, is greatly improved. Knowing Cassian, K2, Saw, Krennic, etc. helps it flow very naturally and helps you to care a lot more about what’s going on. Same with the rebels generally. Since the pace of the show is so slow, Rogue One, which normally feels slow early on, feels much faster by comparison. Almost too fast. Cassian almost rises to the level of secondary protagonist because you know him so well by this point. When he decides not to snipe Galen Erso it’s much more meaningful. You know his modus operandi under Luthen was to gun down anyone who could potentially be a problem, and you see that at the beginning of the movie with his contact on Kafrene. The theme toward the end of the show where he starts to embrace the Force a little bit carries through pretty well.

The part where he tells Chirrut that “this is a first for me” when he’s in Saw’s jail is hilarious because they either forgot about it or he’s lying, given that there’s an entire arc in the show about him escaping a hell prison.

There’s also an interesting dynamic with Krennic’s character. We saw him as the intimidating upper manager figure in the show, but when we see him next to Tarkin and Vader he’s in the junior leagues. There’s a feeling that everything has gone up a level and there’s a natural progression from spies running around to open conventional war.

Then the other half of the movie, which people generally see as much stronger because it has most of the action and the big battle, actually gets weaker. The idea that Jyn steps up and becomes a leader figure right away looks even more absurd because we’ve just seen how paranoid and distrustful the rebel command is and how long it’s taken them to trust Cassian. There’s some of that discussion in the council with some of the worst senators ever but it’s still odd. Then they naturally defer to her to give an inspirational speech to the soldiers on the landing craft, when Melshi is clearly their real leader. The way she suddenly becomes the most important figure in the universe with the ability to single-handedly take out a dozen stormtroopers in melee comes across as more Mary Sue-ish next to the more grounded feeling of the show where everyone receives a lot more development. Baze and Chirrut similarly feel a little more out of place.

The ending feels even more abrupt. There’s no real breather where you take in that everyone died, it just slams right into CGI Leia and credits with little explanation. This was more understandable when this was just a fan film prequel for the original movie but now it feels almost insulting, for lack of a better word.

Everyone is on form in Andor - through both seasons of Andor… though I have to give some extra props to Elizabeth Dulau for her performance as Kleya Marki in this. Those last three episodes were something else.

Spoiler for S2xE10…

Also all credit and kudos to April V Woods - who played ‘young Kleya’ in the flashback scenes; she absolutely nailed it - completely believed she was the young version of Kleya. On those scenes… also props to everyone involved in de-aging Stellan Skarsgård - it was really some a high quality accomplishment.

And she gives us that Mona Lisa moment at the end” - Tony Gilroy…

'Kleya actress Elizabeth Dulau posts a message to the ANDOR fans:-

“I can’t reply to everyone but I’m seeing all your lovely messages and honestly thank you so much, it means the world ❤️ I am immensely proud of our beautiful show Andor and I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed it.”’

I’d watch that.

A Dedra and Syril sitcom - based in their Coruscanti apartment, too. 😃

Mocata’s intriguing idea for Jynn and Saw series!

An ‘Adventures of Young Kleya and Luthen’ series as well, surely.

Hard to imagine before Andor that this character, with merely ~60 seconds of screen-time in Return Of The Jedi, will in 40+ years time be considered one of the most well-written and most important characters in all of Star Wars…

^ with additional shout-outs to our newer Rebel heroes introduced in this iconic show: Nemik, Cinta, Vel, Taramyn, Gorn, Brasso, Maarva, Clem, B2, Bix, Wilmon, the Time Grappler, Ferrix, Thela, the Ghorm, Kino and the Narkina 5 crew, Freedi & Dewi, Niya, Kellen, Erskin, the Force Healer, and of course… Kleya, Luthen, Lonni.

Not forgetting everyone has their own Rebellion… and even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward…

^ give these two their own show! 😉

About time we had a watering plants / botany-based Star Wars series, as well…

^ spoilers for S02E12…

and later Cassian watering his many plants in his home shortly before he leaves for Kafrene - probably thinking about Maarva and Bix…

Watching Rogue One is so DIFFERENT after Andor…

www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bulroJdS8w - a 14 minute video from the Bombastic youtube channel.

^ Plus, this follow-up 10 minute video from Bombastic - ‘Wow, this hits different now…’ when watching Star Wars (1977).

I Forgot That I Loved Star Wars | Why Andor Matters - 6 minute video from the ALLaBorde Productions youtube channel.

How Andor Changed Rogue One Forever - 10 minute video from Star Wars Explained; with full Rogue One watchalong video.

We Watched ROGUE ONE After Andor Season 2 & It Hit SO DIFFERENT!! MOVIE REACTION!! - 2h 30m video from Reel Rejects.

Other Rogue One content that felt different to me after watching Andor…

Cassian even hearing the name ‘Erso’ in Rogue One; that reaction… wow!

The Rings of Kafrene scene where Cassian shoots his asset, Tivik. I love the way Andor re-contextualises that. Also, the scene in Andor S2E07 where the Force Healer fixes Andor’s shoulder… that Cassian likely wouldn’t have been able to “climb”™ out of the corner he was in with Tivik in Rogue One without that (Tivik, with his broken arm certainly couldn’t)… all those small touches leading to and affecting later developments. Beautifully crafted. As well as mirroring Luthen and Lonni.

Every time Andor pushes back against Jyn in Rogue One feels much different now. He wasn’t being a cynic, skeptic or dismissive… he was desperate for proof the Rebel Council would actually accept… (it is now much more layered)… to give meaning and validation to Luthen’s sacrifice; “I’m not the one you’ve got to convince”.

When Cassian on Jedha says: “this town is ready to blow”… he’s seen Ferrix, Ghorman and likely other places erupt into that powder keg of violence… and also likely that same familiar feeling for Jedha.

More, but spoilers for S02E12…

Tarkin admonishing Krennic for recent security leaks… the’re now not just talking about Bodhi Rook… it is Luthen as well. Perhaps Lonni, too. Mothma’s escape from the the actual Imperial Senate. Gorst being assassinated and his work lost as well. The bungled Imperial raid at Luthen’s shop… Luthen being killed whilst being in Imperial custody. Partagaz’s self-resignation (someone he was on first-name terms with, respected, and possibly considered a friend); Krennic was having a fairly bad and disruptive week - right to lead up of Rogue One. Then Tarkin taking the Death Star project from Krennic seems a much less ‘power grab’ move now, too.

As well as content like this…

and later…

Losing K2, Melshi, the Rebel soldiers based at Yavin who volunteered… then Blue Squadron, and the Rebel reinforcements…

The whole last third of Rogue One - well, yeah… that now also hits much harder. 😢

Though obviously Andor as a series works just as well on its own, too…

“More than anything, I wanted to end on hope.

I really want to be hopeful at the end of it. It is not just a way of creating another character for Disney and Lucasfilm.

It’s really much more about finishing on an up note and finishing with something that I think all the people who made the show really want to express, which is that in the end, we really do want to be hopeful.”

^ Tony Gilroy on the final shot in Andor (from this EW article) - contains massive spoilers.

Spoiler for the last shot of Andor - from S2E12…

Well articulated again regarding Rogue One!

The first half flows pretty smoothly off of Andor. Down to little ways how characters react to certain names and things. I never really liked the ending of the film. Every scene in RO with Vader in it is pointless and/or introduces plot/character problems and tone problems most of all. RO is a movie that tries to present a more grounded Star Wars, but occasionally (and sometimes in very important moments, such as the ending) just throws it all aside for cringe fanservice schlock. Which feels more offensive in light of the rest of that movie’s tone, and vastly more so in light of Andor.

So mostly RO feels even more weird for me now. But other aspects of it I appreciate more.

I watched Rogue One too. Still tepid as ever. Still strangely edited with odd tonal shifts and bland characters. The idea that one piece of media improves another just isn’t the case in my experience. I think it’s a Gareth Edwards problem, since despite the input of other writers and studio interference it feels a lot like his Godzilla and The Creator. Nice to look at but damn they are lacking charisma. Jyn’s response to seeing the hologram is where I knew there was a problem; this and the other “emotive beats” are just them going through the motions rather than having real feeling. Oh well, I gave it an honest chance.

I agree on the Andor to Rogue One transition, but also don’t forget that Rogue One was insultingly cut down and tweaked and edited. The tonal shifts are probably a result of this. It was still in Disney’s “Original Trilogy fanservice galore”, which, to be fair, only calmed down now during Andor - and hopefully continues. Gilroy and Edwards should go straight back to the editing room and re-release a Director’s Cut with Andor in mind.

Rogue One should be re-cut to remove all of Vader - except perhaps him staring out on the destruction of Scariff, and calm down Jyn’s rushed arc in act 2 to balance it better off with Andor’s story still going on. He takes the backseat in RO in certain portions - and the main problem with Rogue One was the lack of emotional connection to its two leads. Now that one is fixed, don’t sacrifice him for the lesser character.

Now, give us a Anakin and Obi-Wan Clone Wars live-action series with Andor’s writers (I haven’t even seen Clone Wars, but I love the concept) - and let’s delve into Asajj, Dooku (recast or deepfake), young Ahsoka (i have no interest for “current Ahsoka”, the performance and characters are sleep inducing) and some of the clones and Republic Troopers. I know, i know: “it’s all there in the animated series”. I don’t care! It’s live action for me, babe.

We also need a full-scale 5-minute recreation of Anakin’s slaughter on the Tuskens as a recurring nightmare he’s trying to suppress. I always hated how it only gets 4 seconds in AotC, but we’re supposed to feel the full extent of it.

“But Anjohan, that’s kind of brutal for a kid’s show!”

  • Anakin is burned to a crisp in RotS, kids scroll through creepy videos on tiktok from the age of 8, the world has gone mad and I want me some more psychological Star Wars. This is a no biggie.
