Looks like a lost cause Moth3r. Thanks for the link. Apparently there's nothing I can do to fix my machine but buy a new one. I think I'll pass on that, though I'll probably end up selling this thing back on Ebay once I finish my project. Speaking of which, at this point I'm giving up on capturing my own raw footage. In it's place, I will be getting the raw capture files from Laserman's X0 project. I'm sure these will be much better caps than what I've been able to work with so far. As soon as I get these X0 files I'll be able to crank out these dvd's. Stay tuned.

Sorry to hear about that Zion. Oh well, I'm still looking forward to all the great work you've done on the menus!

Best of luck in the New Year!

Well, at least we've tried it.

Which now makes me VERY curious about Mother's PAL-project...

Just on the ghosting problems mentioned long ago in this thread, the best way to remove this is by using a player that doesn't have the problem (or at least has it to a far far less extent).

Try underclocking the video card as well as setting less agressive ram timings n your bios for a more stable setup.

Hmm, I wonder if I should've used the Japanese disks for the X0 capture...

You didn't?! Oh, the horror! OK, just kidding. But I have just about every NTSC disc available, and I think the Japanese 'Faces' discs are the nicest. I could just be being sucked in by the different IRE setting (i.e. 0 vs. 7.5), but I don't think so.

Ideally you'd have capped three different sets of discs and used TooT, too. Still, the raw X0 cap will be very nice by itself.

The captured image show from the Japanese set does have some loss of detail on the guys right shoulder (near the gun) vs the NTSC one. However the whites are much better and the detail in the eye (around the iris) is better. I am worried that there is actually less detail in the shadow areas on the Japanese set.
There was no need for TooT, the X0 laser doesn't falter on rot, even on severly rotted discs.

Awesome stuff, Zion!

Thanks for all your efforts. That's just the kind of good news I wanted to hear around here!

zion, is that a static menu or a motion menu? I only ask because Leia's face is the only one obscured by the letters. The other pics look great.

The short sample clips I've seen from zion before are very much like the menus on the "real" DVDs: the Star Wars logo recedes into the distance with clips playing inside the letters. Very cool lookin'. I'm sure that's the case here, too. The proof-of-concept I saw some months ago was already pretty polished. It's just the logo that sucked. I hooked zion up with the correct text font (i.e. the one for "Episode V", but I couldn't find the logo. Good to see one has been found!

Yeah, it's the same motion menu I had up before, where the logo fades away with video clips playing inside the letters just like the Official DVD's. I just made a better Star Wars logo in Photoshop and applied it to my existing After Effects project. After trying out a few EPS files that were floating around and not really being happy with any of them, I decided to make my own logo using a screengrab from the ESB opening shot as a reference. I used a font called "Star Jedi Rounded" and tweaked the letters for correct spacing, width and height. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for me.

I'd post the whole clip, but unfortunately my website has exceeded it's bandwidth for the month (yeah, I know, ALREADY!). I have the countless fanboy sites all across the net linking to my image archive and leaching all of my ROTS images to thank for that. But that's another story...

Zion,
I've been playing with my own Laserdisc capture for about a year now and we essentially are using the same equipment. Your email address from your website keeps bouncing back, can you email my spam account (jonstamos at hotmail.com). I might have some answers on the quality issues you're experiencing during capture.

Ok zion, you made me go and install my server so we can begin to discuss some quality issues I have noticed during my year long on/off capture saga with Star Wars. On my home server here (BE PATIENT) there are three untouched captures of the same scene. Only one of these capture cards is able to capture in YUY. The others are captures from an MPEG2 capture card and another from a DV capture card. The results I think are suprising. Remember, these are all raw, untouched captures:

The top picture is a capture from a Canopus ADVC50 card. It shows slight combing, but there is bad dot crawl(?), tearing (?) of red, most easily seen along the top of Leia's left arm. I never really considered DV seriously to start with because of the quality loss from the format.

The center is a YUY capture from a BT8*8 chipset tv capture card. It shows combing artifacts that I've noticed in your captures and really is of poor quality. Despite the good reputation I am not impressed by these cards.

The bottom capture is from a Hauppauge PVR250MCE. To my eyes it easily is the best capture of the group. The interesting thing about this card is that it only captures in MPEG2. That's right, the image that has already been compressed shows the best quality. ***EDIT, I forgot to mention what I don't like about this image, which is the softness of the pciture***

Ok, a word on the source of the capture material. I'm using the definitive collection through a Pioneer Elite CLD-79.

Anyways, I would like everyones comments on these captures and a discussion on capture cards, and anyones personal experience with the PDI Deluxe.

Well, one thing's for sure - a lot of you are putting my raw captures to shame. Those Elite players are amazing.

You're absolutely right, the bottom one looks the best of the three, even though it's MPEG2. Hauppage cards have always been some of the best available, I just never looked at them because they only do MPEG captures. The middle one looks the closest to mine, and that makes sense since my cards are the newer generation of the BT8*8's.

That's a very good example of the three most common variety PC capture devices. You would be better off starting a new thread about this though as it doesn't have much to do with my project.

Done. Zion, from what I understand there is essentially no difference between my CLD-79 and your CLD-D704. I could be wrong but I beleive the 79 is just a D704 in elite badging.
