When Star Wars Ruled the World - 2004

Few movies have reached the iconic status of the original Star Wars trilogy. A long-shot science fiction project that was rejected by multiple Hollywood studios, Star Wars (and its creator George Lucas) defied the skeptics and became one of the biggest pop culture phenomena of all time. Now VH1 is working with Lucasfilm to produce the ultimate oral history of the Star Wars years, When Star Wars Ruled the World. Timed to coincide with the DVD release of the original trilogy on September 21, 2004, this hour-long documentary will take viewers back to those rapturous moments when the whole world wanted to wield a light saber.

The show begins in the mid-1970s as George Lucas struggles to find a way to make his dream project a reality. Relive the incredible and unlikely impact of the first Star Wars movie, the sudden fame of unknowns like Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, and the way fans around the world fell in love, first with the movie and then with the action figures, pillow cases, C-3PO cereal and everything else they could - and did - line up to buy. Manufacturers could hardly keep up with the demand for anything and everything Star Wars (swamped by clamoring fans, the official Star Wars toymaker, Kenner, at one point had to settle for selling vouchers for yet-to-be-made action figures.)

The show will also chronicle the immense anticipation for the first Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back and the build-up to the climactic Return of the Jedi that had fans traveling hundreds of miles to visit the gates of the movie's set. Along the way, we will highlight the cultural impression made on millions of fans by Star Wars icons like Darth Vader, Ewoks, and Yoda, and lines like "I am your father," "That's no moon. It's a space station," and, "May the force be with you."

This is the cover I started last night for the MAGNOLIAFAN Edits...
(I had asked Magnoliafan last year if I could call his Edits the "From the Journal Of The Whills" so that's why that's there
- it's also on the cover I did back in March of 2004)

This is the cover I finshed just now... I also tried your white spine work as the silver I was gonna use looked kooky so anyway....

I'm sure they will evolve some more over the next few days..

This cover will be in the Covers Torrent I plan on posting but I'd LOVE to get some more covers first
- the collection is now sitting at 1.05 Gigs with near 400 covers!

1.05 gigs of covers thats awsome, you rock. I cant wait till you release that

out of curiosity, are you gonna include any of the source materials (mainly thinking the textless posters) in the torrent to encourage others to have a go at some covers.

also, do your covers include any modified covers of the phantom edit 1.1 for the 1.2 version?

ps. thanks for posting the When Star Wars Ruled the World cover. puts me one cover closer to getting covers for all my discs
Why Anakin really turned to the dark side:
"Anakin, You're father I am" - Yoda
"No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!" - Anakin

Excellent covers, Rik, as per usual.

One thing, though: Your cover for the VH1 special says "When Star Wars Ruled the Earth." The proper title is "When Star Wars Ruled the World." Hate to nitpick, but you think you could repost a corrected version?

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Great stuff Rik! And "From the Journal Of The Whills" is a great idea for the MagFan collection! I can't believe I missed it before.
The original Star Wars trilogy: Our cultural history deserves to be preserved and should be available to the public like all great works of art!

Journal Of The Whills should now be the staple 4 the custom sleeves as we can truly marvel at the saga as an 'Epic'

Lucas's Faust-ian tale will deliver as planned with the Episode III - Anyone read Faust? The similarities to Anakin's fall and resurrection through love is are uncanny!

Great work as always Rik - the covers torrent sounds awesome (still hinting for split screen empire and edit:Jedi

Very nice, Rik. I like the DS looming over the Earth. Did you make that yourself?

BTW, what software do you use to create these covers? Specifically, does the software indicate the size of the front, back, and spline, so you know if your imgaes and text stay within the border?

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

Good job as usual Rikter! I *do* like the Deathstar threatening Earth, but before you had posted I had envisioned a graphic for the 'When SW Ruled the World' special like this:

If you like and feel like encorporating it into the cover anywhere please feel free to do so! Either way, good stuff!

THANKS!

Yep, did it myself - Photoshop 7 - I made my own DVD template with all the line indicators embedded in the PSD then I also use PS to print them.

I like that pic also. That would be good to put on the DVD itself, with the Earth in the center.

Rik, could you please e-mail your template to me?

I had the idea a bit back... BUT... couldn't find a hi-rez Jedi poster. I'd be happy to work it up again if anyone can get me a hi-rez scan of that Jedi poster- Don't worry about text or anything cuz I can take care of that. Just PM me and let me know and I'll give ya email address.

On that note, I love playing with Photoshop but unless a *really* *REALLY* sweet idea for a DVD cover comes to my mind, I may just do some graphics and make them available to people to use in templates that already exist. That is, if anyone is ever interested... lol

UPDATE: I just saw the link to a higher res one over in the 'hi-res poster art' thread! Go figure, right? But if anyone has a bigger one still...

Rikter,

I must have at least half-a-dozen DVD cover templates, but was wondering if you would include yours in the covers torrent.

Thanks

These covers are awesome! I was just going to ask that someone make a cover for the Vh1 Special. Perfect timing.

Thanks for making these available Rikter. Keep up the good work. Youre a godsend to hardcore SW video fans everywhere.

I just noticed Rikter, on the 'fixed' cover: you changed the front and back text, but not the spine. The spine still reads "Earth" instead of "World".
