Why doesn't Lucas do this?

Author
Time
Since the OT and the PT obviously don't look, feel or flow very well with each other and Lucas seems adamant about changing the OT to better compliment the PT, why doesn't he do this?

Why not just completely redo all the special effects of the entire OT? Go back to the original principal photography footage, digitize it and then set the ILM folks on it and literally create brand new effects, etc. Essentially, all the stuff involving actors would be the same (just enhanced a bit) and all the SFX would be brand new. Also, bring John Williams back in to re-record the soundtracks to better fit whatever changes occur.

Basically, Lucas would be making brand new movies.

Oh!!! And include the original theatrical versions with them when they come out on DVD.....that is a requirement in any case.

For some reason, this seems like a no brainer when you think about it. I would love to see newer effect set to the old movies. It may or may not make the movies better, but I would be curious as all hell.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the original negatives for the three Star Wars films were not preserved well at all. I'm not sure if the negs even exist/are salvagable anymore.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

No, from all reports, the original negatives for Star Wars are very badly damaged and barely salvigable at this point.

Empire and Jedi, though, I believe are still intact.

I'm sure the negatives had to be scanned to get the excellent transfer visible on the DVD version, which means that a Special FX free version of the film might exist somewhere on a computer, and if so, then a total Super SE redo of all the efects not involving humans would be feasible.

Actually, looking at the archives on SW.com, there's a video feature called anatomy of a Dewback. It shows ILM'ers going into the vaults to find negatives and original plates to help graft their effects onto it.

The negatives are in there, and that video pretty much shows where they are. And you get Lucas on camera saying he's saved everything.

Cable-X1, haven't you seen the DVDs? GL IS doing that! He is slowly adding more and more CGI and slowly removing more and more plot. As I've said here a number of times, he is slowly turning Star Wars into a romantic comedy staring Woody Allen and a CGI Shirley Temple. Which was his original vision.

that's a shit-poor analysis. What "plot" has been removed from ANY of the SE's besides "Greedo shoots at the same time Han does?" certainly nothing that would qualify as "more and more."

I don't like every change via the SE's and the 2004 updates, and I understand why people don't like them, but to say something as overexaggerated and blatantly stupid as "CGI Shirley Temple" and "we're losing more and more plot" is just histrionic overreaction. And that kind of overreaction is actually WORSE than whatever change made to the movie.

If you finished reading his post, you'd see he was just making a sarcastic joke. He's not the one over-reacting.

OK folks, once again, I have to STOP and explain to you that it was a JOKE. I know it's hard to understand when a joke was delivered. I don't HAVE a drummer, and I don't have a laugh track, the people I kidnapped to be my laugh track managed to escape. OK? So when you see something hilariously ridiculous, you can be sure, it is a JOKE. Now, jokes are not ment to be taken literaly, or seriously. They are just exagerated, humorous comments on known topics, ok? So, does anyone has any questions? Did you understand the "joke" thing?

Your joke sucked, dude. If you're gonna go over the top, GO OVER THE TOP. Your "joke" sounded like 95% of the posts here. It's not my fault I misunderstood you, although I apologize for that. If you're going to mock ridiculous garbage like that, you have to MOCK it, not just imitate it dryly. You've got to figure out a way to MAKE your words into that cymbal and rim-shot. I'm not a frigging IDIOT for misunderstanding you, so don't condescend like I am.

I didn't over-react. It was a plain reaction. People act as if directness is substitute for rudeness. It's not. I just think mincing words is a waste of time.

Thanks.

Yeah well, that's why I quit stand up comedy. People tend to think that comedy is either slapstick or laugh-track oriented sictons such as "Friends". I didn't think you were rude, and AGAIN, my reply was ALSO a joke, so I apologize if you didn't understand the joke again, and thought that I was being rude. It wasn't my intention, really.

OK, so, next time, I'll post a wav sound with a laugh track, so it gets easier to understand.

I think that if GL intends to revise his older works to match his vision of later works, then it is imperative that he drop in Bea Arthur as the bartender of the Cantina. She even get's to utter the line "We don't serve their kind ... your droids. They'll have to wait outside."

Wait a minute ... maybe that WAS Bea Arthur in ANH.

Dude, it's just a joke. 95% of the posts here?!?!?! What are you saying? I find this BBS to be one of the more intelligent and mature boards out there...especially on the subject of Star Wars.

Biz...you over-reacted. Take it easy. Here....have a cookiee!!!

And now....back to the thread....I was suggesting that Lucas just literally start from scratch with the original footage from the principle photograpy. What he's doing now is just taking what was finished back then and reworking it, changing it, COUGH(screwing it up)COUGH and enhancing it. I say why not just go back to the point where you just finished principle photograpy and you hand it over to ILM for post production. This is essentially making almost a brand new movie with all new effects from start to finish except you're working with principle photograpy footage that's 30 years old. Only drawback is you can't go back and do pick-ups for the most part.

Well i do like some of the changes. Fixing the lightsabers in ANH, adding Ian to
ESB and cleaning up the rancor makes me a happy chap. I really hate is alterating existing scenes
so i just wish he would stop.
