VLC Media Player (a free media player that plays many different formats of media files) will also play .iso files.
Freemake Video Converter is a good simple to use (and free) media converter to get started with - I use it to copy and convert the larger .mkv files to smaller .mp4 files (so something like Harmy’s ROTJ 20gb .mkv file becomes a 3gb .mp4 file.
As other people have said there are other software out there too like Ripbot264, Handbrake, Vidcoder, MeGui, etc…
A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

The thread title says there’s a avchd dvd9 version (which I suppose would fit on a dual layer DVD, so maybe 9gigs-ish) and an NTSC dvd5 version (which I assume fits on a single layer ~4.7gb DVD).
In all fairness, Harmy has been unable to change the thread title with the new forum software, so that’s actually still a reference to the formats available for the v1.0 release.
But yes, there are a few versions available, but are less ideal than reencoding to your needs from the best quality release, the AVCHD has a decreased bitrate to be, well, AVCHD compliant, the NTSC DVD-5 is DVD compliant (so understandably lower resolution and has the compression issues of MPEG2). The person responding about reencoding it yourself was probably meaning to be snarky, but it actually would be the best option if you want a good quality, more portable version for your own needs that are not tied to particular optical media standards.
Well, if he wanted something around the size of the AVCHD (6-7GB with just one audio track) he’d be best off remuxing the AVCHD, as it is encoded from lossless source using very high quality, very slow settings.
I actually hope for even MORE improved GOUT footage, or even a 4k scan of some aerial scenes… Despecialized 3.0? Maybe.
I agree, using the video from the AVCHD and putting it in a different container will give far better results than re-encoding.
Also, I saw reference earlier to transcode settings that would downmix the 5.1 audio into stereo with Prologic II matrixing, which made my head hurt. The surrounds in the 5.1 are already phase-shifted as it is, which makes for less-than-ideal sound quality when downmixed again, owing to the way it was made. I tried to minimize this as much as possible, but putting additional phase-shifting on top of what is already there will most likely sound even more weird. I strongly recommend using the actual stereo mixes instead, and leaving the 5.1 for listening on an actual 5.1 system. The results will be much better.

I don’t know if I would say “far” better. If you re-encode properly with a good program like Handbrake the differences really won’t be that noticeable, if at all. Especially if you’re encoding for a smaller screen such as a portable device. And if you want to make a smaller file than 7GB or so regardless, you’re better off just encoding from the MKV. Considering how high a bitrate it is (overkill for most practical purposes), it really isn’t a big deal.
Though I agree that it makes no sense to down mix the 5.1 to Pro Logic when perfectly good stereo tracks are available and you may as well just apply the Pro Logic option on your receiver to the stereo track if you have a 5.1 system and for some reason aren’t using the actual 5.1 track anyway.

Still downloading ROTJ v.2.5 on uTorrent, is there any way to make the .mkv file download faster on WiFi (since there is no internet cable port) or to remove some useless stuff to make the download faster and again, the file smaller (especially audio tracks)

No. It’s a single file. If there are other files included, their sizes are so comparatively minuscule that bothering to not include them would not increase the download time in any appreciable way.

Mom’s ancient CRTV was displaying a wavy picture and about to go out completely. I had a 25" monitor, so I let her borrow my 40" until we could get her a new one. I paid half, and hooked it up for her. Then, I was able to get mine back and dump the 25", thank the maker lol.

So, I don’t know if anyone has discussed this yet, but I noticed on Jedi 2.5’s isolated score track that some of the lyrics in Lapti Nek play in the wrong order then they do in the film normally.
Also, out of curiosity, how did you guys manage to isolate Lapti Nek in the first place?

I think it’s the version from the soundtrack or the one that was released as a single. It happens to be different from the one that’s in the film itself.

Plus most if not all of the stereo mixes are PLII compatible anyway aren’t they? I remember getting surround effects from ship flyover and stuff from the VHS tapes as a kid. (The 1993 releases watched in about 2002 or so)

To be honest, I’m not too sure about all the differences with the song. I don’t think it was a mistake on Harmy’s part, though.
