Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 106

Just out of pure curiosity, if the subtitles were extracted from a 35mm print, why was timing for putting them back in taken from the 16mm print? What’s wrong with the timing in the 35mm print they’re extracted from?

Harmy will probably answer eventually, but my assumption would be that he didn’t have access to the entire sequence, and was only provided with the specific frames containing the subtitles?

I’m not entirely sure though that’s just my educated guess.

Nothing. But unlike the 35mm scan, Puggo’s 16mm trasfer just isn’t a huge clunky 4K file that would slow down the entire timeline if put onto it to check for timing - it’s just a matter of convenience and the results are the same.

Also, just to clarify, the subtitles weren’t just re-created based on the 35mm scan - they were literally extracted from it in 4K letter by letter.

I’m finding it impossible to remux the v2.5 AVCHD into a functional mkv. It will mux in mkvmerge without error and look fine in mediainfo but when played in MPC-HT it will show a black screen. If you click in the seek bar it will churn through the file and play after a minute or so, but this is abnormal behaviour. MakeMKV throws an error as well and refuses to mux it. Anyone else experience this or have a solution?

Did you try demuxing first?

Yes. When I demux the h264 stream before remuxing, the movie does start when it’s double-clicked but it still takes a while to catch up when you click in the seek bar. I notice when muxing im mkvmergeGUI that it takes a long time for the progress bar to show anything, like it’s reading through the entire file, then it shoots up to a hundred percent and takes another minute as it seems to write the file. I do lots of video converting/muxing and this is definitely unusual behaviour. I analyzed it in avinaptic and it showed a lot of buffer overflows:

Just finished watching this (after 2 days of downloading at 45kb/s…thank you, dying modem) and…oh my god it’s absolutely wonderful.
I’m a bit too young to have had the privilege to see these films in theater, but I was raised on the '95 VHS releases. Jedi was always my favorite, and I’ve never been this excited to re-watch a film. The wait was entirely worth it.
Thank you for all the hard work and dedication bringing these films back to life, Harmy. You are a true saint.

What, a man builds a giant mound of dirt in his house and you aren’t entertained?

First of all, Harmy, v2.5 looks spectacular. Well done! Thank you so much

Is it just me, or is the audio out of sync? I think the audio is behind the video a bit. I notice this whenever a human is talking, but also at the beginning of the opening crawl (“STAR WARS” is noticeably displayed before the audio comes in). I’ve only tested the MKV with the 5.1 audio - I can test the other audio tracks and the AVCHD when I get home tonight. I’ve tested on two different PC’s, using Plex and Kodi.

It’s trying to play it with the DivX (MPEG4-ASP) directshow codec and not H.264 (MPEG4-AVC). MPC-HC has its own codecs. You don’t need CCCP, ffdshow or anything like that to play it back, use the internal codecs:

http://www.ezoden.com/htpc/11/mpc-hc-internal-filters

If that doesn’t work try VLC which only uses its own codecs.

Some software players have trouble decoding DTS-HD fast enough, and it ends up lagging behind the video. I haven’t noticed anything. Try an AC3 track, which is less decoder-intensive.

Playback on a Raspberry Pi2 using Kodi works for me with the DTS-HD 5.1 track so I don’t know if this is the issue and jzilli said he/she tried Kodi.

Also, I don’t have any issues with the MKV’s of SW and ESB, which also use DTS-HD for the 5.1 tracks.

With Plex, I tried Plex Home Theater and Plex Media Player. This was on a Core i7 system.

Often it’s not a matter of hardware. Most software just decodes the lossy core of the DTSMA track, but if you have something special that may be trying to decode the lossless file, it could be making a mess of it. Which is why I asked you to see if an AC3 track synced OK. The 93 English AC3 track is within a few milliseconds of in sync with the 5.1 DTS-MA track. If the decoder isn’t the problem, they should have the exact same sync issues.

Hey Harmy, first of all thanks for all the work you have done to preserve these films. I can’t tell you how grateful I am.

I watched most of Return of the Jedi last night and I couldn’t help but noticing an issue with the blacks. They look severely crushed in 2.5. I thought this might be due to the source material with the BluRay, but then I looked at version 1.0 and the blacks didn’t look as crushed there. In some scenes it’s more obvious than others, but this is a glaring issue to me and I surprised no one else has brought it up. I also felt as though the brightness level is set a little too low. Again, comparing it to 1.0 where the brightness level felt right. Fleshtones and overall colors are a bit too red for me personally, especially on the Endor scenes. Han looks like he’s spent three years on a tanning bed, not frozen in carbonite. I saw a print of Jedi about 4 years ago and I don’t remember it looking like this. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

Indeed, first complaining too much about the sanctioned distribution methods, then getting over enthusiastic for public trackers, now breaking the rules and posting direct links to the files. Seriously rein in your misguided enthusiasm and take that link down before an admin makes you sorry for doing it. Doing this crap puts the entire site in a compromised position.

You know better than that. We joke a lot here, but not about this. Take it down properly. (We know you’re excited, and you can say that it is hosted in places you like, just don’t show how to get to it directly.)
