Is it wrong to name your kids after a Star Wars character? — Page 2

hey hotrod ill tell you a true story.

2 years ago my sister had a kid, her husband and her were expecting a boy and so were going to name them jay they got a girl so the first thing they thought of was jaya. after they had named her and they had told me the story i said suggested jaina. my sister who is not a SW fan really liked that name but say that since they had already named her they werent going to change it. the point to remember is that she would have named jaya jaina if i had suggested it b4 hand. its not wrong to name your kid after a SW character if the name is nice. i would never name my kid obiwan or chubacca. but jacen or jania are cool names. i have often thought then when i have children to ask my wife if she wants to name our daughter jaina.

name a kid after a Star Wars character, not good a idea. Unless the name is Ben or Luke, the poor kid will get teased and beat up. Kids can be very cruel.

Jacen is a fairly normal earth name.

Just like Jacen and the Argonauts.

But you'd have to spell it Jason to be consistent with the whole Jason and the Argonauts. At least in English that's the spelling.

Jaina is a pretty normal name. Mara works. Leia works as well. If you are concerned with them receiving SW taunts, then respell them. Leah is a very normal name and spelling. One of my old college roommates was named Leah (yes, female).

If you do that, they may think you're naming her after one of the Wonder Twins, though. Much worse than naming a child after a Star Wars character.

That is a definite possibility. But I think that both references are so unlikely to be made that the name is safe regardless. Unlike Leia. With that spelling, it's destined to evoke SW imagery. Hell, I've got the name BOSSK on my license plate and only one person in 8 years has made the connection. I think Bossk is more likely to be tied to SW than Jaina.

I agree with everybody else, stick to more traditional sounding names. Leia, Mara, Luke, Ben (obviously no problem there) sound good and I don't think would be too big of a problem.

Just don't name him/her anything cruel like Cocco. Courtney Cox named her kid that and there's only 1 way the kid can turn out.

I pray that the child has her husband's last name. Cocoa Arquette would be so much better than Cocoa Cox. Sounds like a bad breakfast cereal. One of the funniest things I remember regarding Courtney Cox was an interview that Andy Dick gave to a Chicago radio station. He was asked if he had ever turned down a role that he regretted. He said he was offered the role that David Arquette had in the Scream movies. He's upset about it because he now realizes that he would be married to Courtney Cox and her name would be Courtney Cox-Dick as a result. I'm no Andy Dick fan, but that was damn funny.

I hate some of the names that celebrities give to their kids. Apple for Gwyneth Paltrow/Chris Martin's daughter? What the hell is that?

Ugh. "Apple Martin" is one letter off of "Apple Martini" ... some people should be licensed before procreating.

Well, not to say that she and Chris are bad parents, but maybe off-kilter names such as these should be run through some kind of naming committee. Never thought about that Apple Martini thing. Funny stuff.

I think Bossk is right, most people won't make the connection, and so as long as you don't go overboard, you should be able to keep the actual spellings, which means that Jacen and Jaina and even Bastila could be perfectly fine names for children. Keep in mind that there are a growing number of bizarre names springing up these years (and a lot of them are androgynous, to make matters worse). We live in an age that's moved beyond John and Mary. I've even heard of kids name Montana and Dakota, and I'd give a child a Star Wars name far, far before I'd name a child one of those names.

I agree, next thing you know people will be naming their kids after trees and kitchen appliances.

I've met an Adolfo before. And I've known of a japanese guy who named his son "Akuma", which is "devil" or something like that.

Well, there are companies that have paid for naming rights on children. And there are parents who have auctioned naming rights for their children. Sad, eh?

If I were one of those children, I would be suing for independence and legally changing my name before grade school. Can you imagine how much resentment a child like that would have for their parents? Childhood is cruel enough even with a normal name. Give a bully ammunition like a stupid name and that child is screwed for life.

Many immigrants take their given names and call themselves the closest anglicised version. It could be a subtle code where the meaning is known to you but no one would laugh or beat him up.

Lando - Landon/Landis
Vader - Victor
Artoo - Arthur
Threepio - Thaddeus? um.... skip that one.
Han - Hans/Shawn

and so on. There's no science to it...

And what about the 3 poor kids in the US named 'ESPN'?
Then there is Hollywood, where we have Apple Paltrow (or whatever the kdis last name is), and now we have Hazel and...umm...Filmore, no, Phinnaeus, yes that's it.

Phinnaeus?? I've got a friend to introduce you to, his name is the 21st century.
That kids going to have a home tutor, you know. No parent in their right mind is going to first give that name, then let them go to school with it.

They'll be luck if the tutor doesn't riticule the kid.

There's this guy, who became famous in the 90s over here, whose name is Um Dois Três Oliveira Quatro, which translates to One Two Three Oliveira Four. I guess his last name was Quatro - which is bizarre by itself- and his dad was waaay to drunk at the time. There are also the three twin sisters who were namedafter three different synonims in portuguese for "xerox copy" (Xerox, Fotocópia, Autenticada), and there's this woman whose name is very similar to uh... the genital parts of a woman. Some people put her phone number on the internet, poor lady.

I read an article in my set of American Heritage History of the United States books once about a socialist organizer in the early 20th century who named his kid Legal Tender. So I guess it's not such a new thing after all. I wish I could remember what the guy's name was...was it Jacob Cox? Actually, I think it was...damn, the things that your memory will recall from nowhere.

About 10 years ago, here in Cleveland, we had a couple guys on the radio, Jeff and Flash. They had a few segments on their show that I found funny enough that I'd actually tape them on a day-to-day basis (listener jokes, dumb ways to die, weird stuff in the news).

One that I remember talked about a man in Italy that was proud of is Asten Martin, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Jaguar and Lexus.
Those were the names he gave to his sons. His wife finally put her foot down when they had a girl. Her name is Maria.

And then the old joke about the little girl named Crystal (pretty normal, right?). Then you get her full name... Crystal Shanda Leer.
