Just a quick question for Magfan.

Where did you come up with the names "Balance of the Force" and "The Clone War"?

Only reason why I'm asking is I'm playing SW Battlefront last night...and two of the missions are the same names as your edits. Coincidence?

He made these edits before Battlefront was made...so unless the makers of the game are fans of his edits i would assume its coincidence.

Btw, still need to get The Clone War, is anyone seeding or going to seed this on myspleen?

I have actually been contacted by a few Lucasfilm and Lucasarts employees who are fans.
I know some of the people behind Galaxies and Knights of the Old Republic are big fans, and there is a little reference to Balance in Kotor, so it is possible that an homage was dropped into Battlefront as well. On the other hand, it could be a coincidence...

It's probably a coincidence: Balance of the Force was a very popularized rumored name in 1997/1998. Which is why "Phantom Menace" suckerpunched a lot of people when it was announced. Everyone assumed "Balance of the Force" was the title. And "The Clone War" was not only the title of a videogame that had been released BEFORE "Battlefront" but was one of the most rumored names for "Episode II from even before Episode I was released. The same idea that jumped into Mags head regarding titles has probably jumped into a lot of people's heads. I even remember Spin magazine, back in 1999, saying "The Clone War" was definitely going to be the title of Episode II, so the idea of that being a title in the Star Wars universe has been around for quite a long time.

Hopefully not "The Creeping Fear". (I'm kidding)

Maybe Birth of the Empire? That was a leading rumored title.

Even so... there would have to be minimal editing of Jar Jar (who is sure to have at least a FEW lines), Neimondians, etc. to ensure continuity with the previous edits no?

But let's think about it, it isn't going to be as good as we'd hope. It will require *some* tinkering to be made better. And I'm glad we have none other than our very own MagnoliaFan on the job when the DVDs come out.

I know MagnoliaFan also has planned some editing to do with the OT as well, but I say no thank you. No thank you. It does sound intriguing, but not for my definitive Star Wars. The way I see it... the OT is the story and the prequels are simply backstory to it. All I really wanted done was to have the backstory made bearable.

He's going to have to chop some of Ben's speech in the hut, otherwise, if you've seen the prequels, Ben spoils who Vader really is in that speech.

I myself think it's going overboard to special edition the originals on a site called original trilogy, but if he really wants to make EVERYTHING in the six movies teeter totter on that ONE twist, then yeah, he's going to have to take the knives to the OT. But I'm not entirely certain that actually doing that kind of editorial gymnastics is going to really help in that instance--because there's no way to edit out the fact that both their last names are Skywalker, and that they both grew up on Tatooine, and that alone will be enough for most people to have the "twist" spoiled for them. The mere existence of the prequels themselves is enough to render that twist ineffective as a "Boo!" moment to anyone BUT Luke in the movie. Which is fine, the focus of the drama simply shifts. and at this point, even people who never have seen the films know "Luke I am your father."

I for one don't think the twist in ESB is the be-all, end all of the series, and re-editing to simply preserve that twist actually does the PT and the OT a disservice dramatically and structurally, but I'm not MAGS and I'm not re-editing these things

But let's think about it, it isn't going to be as good as we'd hope.

the two paragraphs preceding don't really have anything to do with the paragraph I quoted. So the context is pretty much nailed down how I had it in the first place. His point was that the movie simply won't be as good as we're hoping, and that you'll have to fix stuff because it won't be as good as it should be. Which is pretty ridiculous to say at this point, since there's no way homeboy has any idea how good the movie will or won't be as a statement of fact.

Granted, even if this thing wins frigging OSCARS, you're still going to have to edit it to fit into your Elseworlds version of Star Wars, but that really doesn't have anything to do with the part I quoted.

Well 2 weeks later after downloading I finally was able to get BOTF on DVDr to watch on my TV, I could have watched it my computer but headphones and small screen SUCK.

Anyway all I can say is WOW. This version kicks Ass. Great editing job Magnolia. Everything connected as it should. Its almost like watching another movie. Cant wait to get Clone War.

Finally got and watched my MagFans. In the immortal words of MC Hammer, yo sweetness.

Before these, I liked AOTC much more than TPM. It was more exciting and had less sticking points. But with the edits, I like episode I much more than episode II. I guess, now that I see MagFan's vision, TPM was a good movie with some horrendous sticking points. Removing them (and upgrading some of the other stuff) and putting it all together left a good movie. Amazing work, and amazing vision. AOTC, on the other hand, had few awful sticking points but lacked even the potential for a great movie. So the MagFan version didn't change it too much for me. I wish Magnolia had better building blocks to put together, because I really like his perspective. But I don't think he had the material to make it as good as the Balance of the Force. Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing could handle "high language", but the new cast just doesn't know how to deliver it, and there's no way to change that.

As for the OT edits, I'm also not interested. Some things, like Uncle Owen and the name Skywalker will be difficult to get around. Ultimately, I like them as they are. But as someone else said, having the PT in a format that conforms to the OT as much as possible is a wonderful gift that MagFan has given to us. High praise and gratitude for that. You have great admiration from most of us on this site, Magnolia.

Agreed about AOTC.

I still am not real fond of episode two, even tho MagnoliaFan has definatley improved upon it.

Im thinking that even though the PT is chronologically before the OT that when i someday show these movies to my kids Ill show them the OT first, then the PT.

The reasoning is not because the PT is worse and i think it will ruin their experience of the OT. Part of it is comments here about ruining the suprises in the OT by watching the PT but I guess im starting to view the OT as more of a back story than as the first part of the story. Ugh, I really cant seem to express the why very well, but i guess the best example i can come up with is Wolverine. You have this character, and his past is this great mystery...eventually the creators (or some new entity) goes back and revisits that past, and tells you the story. Should you wait till this story comes out to read the original story line? Probably not as (in a general sense) this story may never be created. If you havent read it should you read one before the other? In truth it probably doesnt matter, but by reading the back story first you dont have a lot of information on the character/story so while you may enjoy it, it doesnt have the same connection.

Now im not saying the PT accomplishes this adding to the character you already know type situation. But I guess my point is I feel that they dont have to be (and probably arent really meant to be, unless you ask Lucas) watched in time chronological order.

I agree.

I see the Original Trilogy as being the actual story. I'd be happy to just show my friends those three films and call it complete.

I see the prequel trilogy as mere backstory. It's kinda neat, but still not on the same level as the OT.

That's why my Star Wars DVD collection consists of O-OT bootlegs, and Magnoliafan's brilliant edits of the PT.

I just got the the PG version from "ADigitalMan" and it's COOL - There seems to really be no changes to the dialogue other then making it more of a PG version of the Edit so for those of you that wanted a more TONED-DOWN version for your kids, other family members or for those of you that thought the alleged "swearing" went to far. YOU now have an option!!

This is an update from "ADigitalMan"


1) MagnoliaFan's original subtitles are still on the disc, on subtitle stream 2. Nothing has been "taken away" from his version.

2) You're right in that the dialogue changes are subtle. As a former editor (word, not video) I merely tried to punch up the dialogue a little by using more active voice and less passive voice. i.e. The characters are "doing" more, as opposed to "having things done." That said, there were a few key differences in my version of the dialogue. Namely:

3) Jar Jar still tries to be a tough-guy, but not to the point of being a jerk to everybody. Instead, he's trying desparately to fit in and make himself useful, in spite of his foibles and insecurities.

4) Jar Jar makes the point that he considers Nass to be weak-minded, underscoring the point that this leader of the Gungans was so easily affected by the mind trick. This bit at the beginning of the "bongo" scene changes the feel, as if we've come into the conversation a little late, where Qui-Gon might have been explaining how the mind-trick works. It becomes more of a counterplay with the scene in Luke's speeder in Ep IV.

5) Jar Jar intentionally set loose the wagon full of boomers on the tanks.

6) Nute Gunray never suspects Padme to be the queen, as he's never seen her face and she approached him still dressed like a handmaiden, not in the Queenly gear. This makes her plan that much stronger, as it allows her to get close to Gunray, then use the decoy queen to draw all of the battle droids away.

But when Luke asks Obi-Wan in ANH "You fought in the Clone War?" you take him literally, as if he is mentioning the film itself.

Thanks for the kind words, Rik. Again, I wish to reiterate that this is not a wholesale change from MF's brilliant work. It's merely an option in the subtitle dialogue. Changes are mostly subtle (I'm no video editor, but I was once a good print editor), with a few additional plot points such as Gunray not realizing that Padme was the queen (why would he, I always wondered).

Most importantly, MF's subtitles are still preserved on the disc, giving the viewer the option of which stream to view. No menu has been created (I haven't figured out how to do menus despite serious efforts) but since it's only one movie, the subtitle button does the trick nicely. If anybody here is good with menus, I could certainly use a hand.

So... does anybody including MagnoliaFan himself know anything about the EpIII edit? And/or what it's going to be called?

Any idea of what kind of edits may happen? This is probably way to soon to be thinking about it, but just wondering.
After all... this will be my *definitive* version the final installment of the Star Wars prequel backstory.

^ hopefully MagnoliaFan, Spidernap and Rikter will still be doing the dvd covers, and your good self will be doing an Insert for the Ep3 Edit.

Hope MagnoliaFan adds ADigitalMan's subtitles as an option to his eagerly anticipated new Ep1 Edit, too - it'd be cool to have the choice of either.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…
