I once criticized people for being close to their pets. I saw them projecting human emotions and thoughts into animals, and reminded them that dogs and cats are incapable of our higher cognition.

And then someone dumped a puppy on me earlier this year. I tried to live by my own words. I taught him his name and trained him to potty outdoors and treat others gently. I played with him often, cared for him, but all while trying to stay distant. I thought I had. After several months, the dog began to suffer from a digestive ailment. It was a slow death. However long he had left when I chose euthanasia was too long.

I felt numb until later that night when I left my bedroom to make some coffee. I looked at the couch, his favorite sleeping area. He should have rushed over to me as usual, but he was gone. A few minutes later I was weeping like a child.

I was ashamed that his death had more an effect on me than some people that have died in my life. I had fallen into the same trap that I'd been disgusted with others for falling in.

He lived less than a year. He was a dog. But he taught me some profound lessons about myself.

Anyhow, do you have a pet?

Sorry to hear of your dog's passing.   I know what it is like to lose a dog.  We had to put my dog to sleep in July.  She was the third dog we've had.   I will always remember the days they died.  You have my sympathies.

Much appreciated, Warbler. And I am sorry for your loss.

I placed his unsnapped collar at the base of a decorative oil burner. It reminds me to practice humility.

This reminds me too much of how my parents are against euthenizing pets. But nevermind -- I'm not going to get into that BS here.

As for the pets I own -- I have four dogs (one who has anophthalmia or microphthalmia; in either case, he's blind) and seven cats (one of whom has gone more-or-less feral.)

I sort of have pets...they're not really the same as cats and dogs (I like them better), but I have over three hundred fish, aquatic snails, and shrimp varying in size from tiny guppy fry to 9 inches long. They live in three aquariums (5, 6, and 10 feet long). Oh, and I have a ring-necked dove as well.

Sorry for your loss Reegar.

I consider animals as family, not pets.  I treat them the way I want them to treat me and they usually respond better than humans in that regard.  I also believe that animals do feel in a similar way to people.

I've had cats while being on my own since I moved out of the parentals place years ago.  My firstborn, Dusty, was 24 when she passed.  She went at home in my arms.  My second oldest, Asia, got real sick and passed at home in my arms .... she was 15.  They taught me plenty.

I miss all my dogs. Most of all my family's golden retriever who died while I was in college. Her son was a great dog who is now also dead. After the loss of him and my grandmother, I remarked that there was no one left in the family that I cared about. Maybe an exaggeration, but they were my favorites. Sorry to hear about your dog but I'm glad he was important to you. And nice trio doubleofive.

doubleofive's tabby reminded me of my Cat Oscar. We had to have him put to sleep this time last year because of cancer which was causing him a lot of pain. Lots of visits to the vets and operations but it was no good. Hope euthanasia of humans is finally legal when I get like that, it's a more dignified way to go IMO. I was looking at the spot on the couch he liked to curl up in the other day. Not sure how old he was because he was from a cat sanctuary.

Here he is chillaxing in front of our wood burning stove...

I haven't purchased animals for company for almost two decades. There is a lot of wildlife I interact with and other people's non-human pals.

The house is full of the most amazing spiders at the moment all trying to hook up with that 'special person'.

Before that I was brought up around and for a while lived with cats until I discovered my hay fever was actually an allergic reaction to cats. I only discovered this after I was forced to leave my last non-squished cat with my ex.

My dad paid for a Macaw to be sent to this chilly country when I was very young and after he died I looked after her.

She was great, used to pick off my buttons and try to mate with my feet sadly she became egg-bound and died around the same time I was hospitalised for some months. I got better but she didn't.

Knowing she was there if someone old died leaving a homeless budgie or other caged bird I was usually pressed into looking after them.

They were all little people with different shapes. Each of the creatures I have shared my life with but particularly the birds. I miss them but I can't possibly cope with keeping a bird in a cage again even with the open cage policy I had back then. Also my ex was very cruel to them when I left. It's all rather horrific.

Birds are meant for their native environment.

The starlings that nested in our roof were funny too, even if they did fill the house with tiny spiders... oh the mice in the shed loved them, they were lovely.

Life is cruel, everything should eat cake and be nice to everything else.

I had a pair of Ring-necked Doves for a while. I let them out of their cage about once a week so they could fly around the house. They usually stayed around the same place and nearly always returned to their cage at night. One of them always picked on the other, and the latter died after a while. At the time of my last post in this thread, I still had one, but I sold him because I didn't feel I was giving him enough attention, since the fish interested me more.

I've also taken care of a couple baby blackbirds that fell out of their nests. One died, but another, which hardly had any feathers when we found it, we (my dad and I for the most part) raised it until it grew feathers and was starting to get to active to be safely left in its nest on top of the fridge. We released it and with the coaxing of its parents (I'm surprised sometimes at the concern birds have for their babies) it made it up a fairly large pine tree and rejoined them.

My dad's family (or maybe it was my grandpa's--I can't remember) raised seven baby sparrows, including teaching them how to fly. They went south and returned to the house the following year.

Oh and there is Mr Bubbles but he kind of keeps me as a pet along with his special friend 'green ball'.

meet Natasha:

Kids aren't in the cards for us, so Natasha is our daughter.  See that look in her eye?  She's very mischievous.  She also loves people - whenever the doorbell rings she runs to the front door.  We call her our "greeter".

I've had lots of pets over the years - dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, fish, mice, rats.  The worst loss was our pet rat "Felix" - rats have incredible personalities and can become very attached to people.  When she died of lung cancer - she couldn't breathe and went into a panic, running up to us as if begging for help.  She died in my hands, gritting her teeth, it was awful.  After that I never wanted a pet rat again - they only live for 3 years, just enough time to become a member of the family and then they die.  Dogs and cats are better choices.

There is a very interesting scientific account of animal consciousness in the book "Consciousness: an Introduction" (by Susan Blackmore).  There is debate surrounding consciousness and cognition in animals because of their limited language abilities, but often strong memory skills.  There is also reason to believe that different animals experience different sorts of consciousness, because of differences in their sensory apparatus.  Imagine what your consciousness would be like if you couldn't see color, but you could detect infrared signals.

My family has a 5 chickens,6 cats,a rabbit, and a Dog named Watson.  Our latest pet is a kitten that wondered into our yard a few weeks ago.  She likes me and sits on my shoulder while I play Halo Wars. I named her eggroll because I think there is just about enough meat on her to make one.

Here is a picture.

I do enjoy animals.

My parents bought my brother and I a golden retriever/lab mix when we moved out to the country as a family dog to watch over us as we ran around in the desert all day long. His name was General. He came from a military family who was being reassigned to Hawaii, and the dog would have been quarantined for so long that they didn't want to put him through it, so he became ours. He got his name because the guy's brother had a dog named Sarge and his dog had to outrank his brother's.

General was like a second brother to me. The three of us would go out chasing coyotes or just exploring. Sometimes we would lose sight of Gen, but he would always come bursting out of the bushes if we called him.

For a big dog, he never had too many of the problems big dogs get. He was arthritic near the end, but never had any bad hip dysplasia, even before the end he would always hoist his giant self off the floor to greet you at the door, jumping like the puppy he still was at heart. He always had a sensitive stomach, though, and required very fancy foods that were also expensive in order to keep him from puking or having horrible ear infections. We always joked that he ate better than we did.

I remember going down to visit my parents last year and seeing him. I'll always kick myself for not going out and sitting with him late at night and talking to him like I used to when I was feeling down, or taking him on a long walk, or letting him sleep in my room, because he died not long after. I will forever regret not being there with him when he needed me, but at the same time I guess I get to remember him as still peppy and happy. Still hurts to remember him, though. Every time I see a picture of him I feel it right in the heart.

Sorry to be a downer, but I do like to talk about how great he was. He was a shithead sometimes and once locked himself in the laundry room by accident and destroyed it trying to get out, but he was a good dog and I miss him all the time. It's perfectly normal.

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

And all but one of those dogs and one of those cats are now gone.

I often wonder what became of Reegar. He was here a few short months, was shaping up to become a regular poster, then disappeared into the ether.
