Personally while I think he probably deserves it for his earlier work and the significant accomplishments in film thats he's made during his life, im wondering if this is gonna inflate his head and make feel like his recent changes to his classic works is accepted and supported by all. Not that he's gonna change his minds about the changes if he didnt get the AFI, but Im thinking it could spur him on to do even more changes because it, in his mind, re-enforces that his changes are the right thing to do.

I agree. He deserves it for his earlier work, but I worry that it will inflate his ego(this assumes of course that it is possible to inflate his ego more than it has already been inflated)

Definately deserves it for his earlier work - though most of that no longer exists...

I wonder if all his awards and £££ from that early work does too?

Am I the only one confused by this? Doesn't Lucas destroy film history and keep it from being seen??

as much as many of us dont like GL current work, he is still busy revelutionizing portions of the industry. If you didnt see Attack of the Clones in all digital, you missed an amazing visual piece of work. Though the movies stink, the limits of technology that GL pushes will benefit all of filmdom...

Maybe they should erase all reference and documentation of said award shortly after he recieves it.
"Oh, sorry Mr. Lucas. We always intended on Mickey Mouse revieving the award but couldn't because of budget constraints."

I mean, is that not relatively the same thing he's doing to us?

My stance on revising fan edits.

Heh, i was thinking the same thing, a Roast of Lucas would be great to see.

But yes, I think he deserves it. As Kingsama said, he is currently at the forefront of filmmaking technology. Plus his work has inspired many filmakers professional and amature. And the truth remains that his earlier work is great, and most people here admit that and like it. My whole concern was that this will strenghten his justifaction that essentially wiping out these earlier works is acceptable. I just want him to accept his earlier work for the great films that they are and see them as his fans do...if that happens im sure that an OT dvd release will occur and with more care/quality put into it than the current release.

Hopefully this award will open his eyes to the influence that he and his work, early work as well as current, has on the movie/film industry and he will realize the error in decision to remove the original versions from the public's eye

So at the risk of being called a fanboy, I just want to say:

Congratulations Mr. Lucas

They should give the award to him, and we he is up on the stage, going to pick it up, the person delivering it pulls it away at the moment GL is ready to grab it, saying "NOT!" And then everyone laughs at him.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I wish more big-name Hollywood people would stand up to GL. It seems like they all give him a free pass, or kind of look the other way out of professional courtesy when he makes his decisions . But you know they think the same thing we do. Sure there are spoofs and grumblings, but the only time I've ever heard of someone directly approaching GL was in an interview with Trey Parker, where he said he saw GL at an event and made it a point to go up to GL and tell him how pathetic TPM was (which probably wasn't too persuasive).

Well, on the one hand I feel like he deserves it because the OT changed, in many ways, the way films were done. Having a sound track playing throughout the movie rather than just for certain scenes was not commonly done, having the credits at the end, giving the director more freedom and say over his own work, etc. And early ILM work was the most innovative thing around and changed the way effects were done.

On the other hand, based on his newer work, it seems likely that those developments were largely due to the entire Star Wars team and not Lucas' vision alone. Or, you could say, Lucas' vision and the team's implementation. That vision is absolutely worthy of a lifetime acheivement award. But those who executed it, the directors, screenwriters, effects guys and so forth deserve it just about as much as he does. Because, again as demonstrated by his new work, his vision never would have become acheivement without all of them. And I wish he knew that.
If you're going to take forever, then I'm having a hotdog!
