DVD+R compatable players

Most players play DVD-R discs but I learned the hard way that only a few play DVD+R media. Here's a list I found. Do with this knowledge whatever you like. I found it to be invaluable.

BTW, TR47 disc sound great and look even better! You're all fighting the good fight...Believe it.

Yep, that's the main reason I use DVD-R media. +R is a seperate format, kind of like Beta to VHS.

That's the reason I went with TR47: he uses -R and Rikter uses +R (which my machine won't play). Glad I went with TR47 anyway...he's been very helpful and generous, although Rikter seems like a real nice guy, too. I think Rikter said he'll be using -R as well soon, but I could be mistaken.

I know the feeling, I found by trial and error that only -R discs work in my player. But it's great at handling really odd XVCD formats, except for those produced by FFMPEG's mpeg-1 codec...

If you burn it right, it doesn't matter...all mine have played fine on every single player I've tried it on....so you might as well add Toshiba SD-1800, the PS2, I dunno what model my Sony is....

But the point is they've NEVER not worked for me.

You beat me to it! I was gonna post that website today. Great website. Just do a search for your model and it'll give you other people's experience with that player. Lots of other info there as well.

^ it doesn't like playing dvdr?

Take it back right now get one that will!!!

On a sidnote - is it only non region1 player owners who buy multiregion dvd players. I've spoken to a few m8s from the USA who weren't aware their dvd players could be modded...

1. Americans are uneducated.
2. Since movie studios in the USA added region coding to the DVD specification, the USA honours the patent.

Hal's copy of MagnoliaFan's DVDs are probably DVD+R.... out of the four DVD Players I currently have connected at home only 1 (the XBox) will play those DVD+Rs.... even my new LiteOn player crapped out on the DVD+R of MagnoliaFan's BOTF.

... no reason to return the player... just copy the disc to your HD and burn it to a DVD-R disc, it will work on pretty much anything.

Someone else mentioned that if you "burn it right" that it should not matter whether it is DVD+R or DVD-R. I would like to hear a little more about this... when I first bought my burner I bought a boat load of DVD+R discs because like always, they were much cheaper but no matter what software I use or how I burn the disc, nothing I burn to DVD+R will work on anything other than my XBox, however, I have yet to find a DVD-R disc that didn't work on every player I have and every player my friends and family has.

Ash, I think that was you... do you have any tips for burning with DVD+R media... any specific software... Nero, etc.

It is my belief that DVD+R discs are cheaper because the "moneymakers" in the industry know it is less compatible and will not work as well as DVD-R discs on most players... thus reducing "pirating" for people not in "the know". Sadly, I have never seen a dual-layer DVD-R disc... they are all DVD+R and most likely as incompatible as their DVD-5 ancestors.

Maybe ChainsawAsh was referring to the Book Type Field

My burner is an OEM model BTC-1008. BTC provides a utility program to set the book type which is used in conjunction with your burning software.
I think recent versions of Nero offer the book type option on supported hardware without the use of the separate utility program.

I've had good results setting +R media with DVD-ROM book type. Just last night I gave a m8 Dr.Gonzo's ANH to text on Xbox and PS2, so we'll see how that works. So far so good on all the standalone players I've tried.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Dunno anything about that, but I have NEVER had a problem on an Xbox, PS2, or any DVD player I've played any of the discs I've burned on.

DVD+R are the media I use - If found that they are easier to copy and seem to over the lest amount of write errors (AT LEAST on my Writer) I

If Rikter is dealing +Rs then thats what I have, and they have played on all of my devices (PS2, an older Philips, and my newer Philips).

My Philips DVP642 is a nifty little player and has no problem with +R/W or -R/W, and can play discs from any region. For those who said their PS2 could play +R discs, are you talking about a modded unit?
Author
Time
No, absolutely not; my PS2 is all original parts, even the original DVD driver that came with it I believe.

My PS2 is modded, but I dont think that has anything to do with it playing +Rs...I could be wrong, ill have to take my discs over to my friend's house and see.
