Yep. Congress just passed new laws. You can't back up anything you own anymore, the way the new laws are worded, even though that is illegal according to other laws (I believe). It is one big snafu. The lobbyists finally got through to some people, and Sen. Orin Hatch had something happen to him, I forget what exactly, that caused him to switch his beliefs, and he was one of the people that got the darn thing pushed through.

It is illegal to back up CDs, DVDs, rip anything from a disc (even for your own private, personal use), etc.

You know what they say about laws that are unfair... Blatantly ignore them XD (This was the method used during the civil rights movement, too)

^ That would seem to be quite a difficult law to monitor and enforce.

Thankfully the laws in the UK allow for transference from one storage media to another - ONLY as a backup for the person who has purchased/owns the disc, tape, dvd or whatever format - of course.

This makes the case of the 28 people the BPI (British music industry PTB) are suing for downloading tracks off p2p programs a little more complex - if they have bought/own a music track or album of the downloaded material (unlikely, but possible) then I don't think they can be prosecuted...

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Well, my LD's don't have Macrovision, and I don't recall an FBI warning at the beginning either.

I didn't bother with Aliens since it's not 2.35:1, it's 1.85:1.

If I find a movie with the same logo as Empire and Star Wars I'll let you guys know.

Empire has a diffrent logo than Star Wars. What about on Empire of Dreams? Isn't on there?

Speaking of aspect ratios, is it just me, or are the old tv/movie ads for the films zoomed/cropped to make them 16x9? I need to put in my Def LD's to confirm, but I know those ads were 4x3.

@ Hardcore Legend-- No, Empire's logo was the same as Star Wars's. Look at my screenshots. The EMPIRE transfer was darker than the STAR WARS transfer, which is why they look a little different brightness-wise, but the logos themselves are the exact same.

@ Me Be Jedi -- I believe they were cropped for 16x9. Not sure though.

I'm pretty sure Fox changed their logo between SW and ESB.

Ah well at least I still have the legal right to back up software. No one can take that from me, except the Australian Government - and I doubt the ACCC would let them do that.

I stand corrected. I had always thought the logo was diffrent, however it wasn't changed until ROTJ. I apologize.

Ok, its come down to hardcore nitpicking. In order to be completely faithful to the era, you must use the Alien3 logo for ROTJ. If you look closely at the cropping on the logo, you'll see how they match. Another, more complicated way, would be to take the JPEGs into Photoshop, and matte them overeachother at 50% opacity. Whichever one lines up perfectly is the one to use. If you want the logo for SW and ESB, start Googleing for Fox's caatalog between 1976 and 1981, then trim it down to the flicks shot in 2.35:1 scope. Its all simple logic and deductive reasoning, people. Anyone wanna join me in the hunt for the logo? I can hit up my local rntal stores and my wifes place of business (used DVD-VHS shop) and try to find movies that fit the era/aspect ratio.

Two more quick ones:
Patton (1970)
and Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970)

Between all these, there ought to be a usable logo somewhere.

I have Tora! Tora! Tora! so I'll check that out right now...

I've just checked the Fox logo on Mash, and it seems the same as Star Wars to me... (although the music is somewhat different)

And don't bother with Butch Cassidy!

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

"Dont think it'll work very well..."

Of course not, silly. Everyone knows the "destroyer" should be at the top of the screen. Here, I fixed it for you.

Oh, of course! I can't believe they sent me a defective copy...sheesh...

When I get MASH back from my dad I'll check it. Music doesn't matter since the SE music is the same as the original music (for the FOX logo, I mean).

Yeah, sound matters not, as it'll be used only for video. Remember, Mike is using the audio from the Def LD (and maybe the Fox LD if we bug him enough., See my thread on alternate audio for details.)

Mark, I see you've actually altered something. This is not on, it should be about preservation of the original movie. If you want to make alterations put them into a seperate fan edit - because that's no longer the theatrical version.
Author
Time
... This is not entirely about making a duplicate of the theatrical version, it's about Mike fixing the DVDs the way he likes it. It's his project. He's more or less de-SEizing the discs, but some things are being kept.

Take it easy, Daniel. Someday, the version you want may exist. You might even try your own hand at it.

Actually, I plan on incorporating both, 1 per audio channel...

As for the FOX logo, can I just say... I find it interesting that for all the fretting and worrying and stressing I've done about every little detail in the film up to this point, the one thing I decided in 10 seconds has been talked about the most in this thread. How about that...

_Mike
