It's analog, with 480 vertical pixels. I don't believe the horizontal resolution is defined.

It's not so much my ass, as it is my son's. He's having surgery next month. Gotta save some money.

"PS. Will you be using the orginal Fox opening logo and Lucasfilm Ltd. at the beginning of the movie too for your approximation of the 1977 version of Star Wars?"

Yes, straight off the laserdisc. It's the only way to watch Star Wars.

"It's analog, with 480 vertical pixels."

Correct. Technically, I have been capturing at 720X480, if that answers your question.

The MeBeJedi STAR WARS: A New Hope (prototype VERSION???what 2 or 4?)

THIS is ONLY 1 opinion.................... (written at 5:30am)

First,
This is not a transfer of the Definitive Collection LD's but a transfer of the "Faces" set (which is said to be of better quality)

It's like watching the film for the first time at home again!

But this time we are treated with a 15 second THX LD trailer that is followed by a 27 second "Millenium Falcon" intro which navigates straight to the main menu. This basic menu layout that thankfully lacks all the "Drama and SPFX" that most new commercial DVD's all seem to be infected with, instead MeBeJedi delievers a neat, clean basic menu layout that features an immediate chapter selection screen (witty chapter names ). The discs menu structure lacks any needless title screens and selecting a chapter is simple enough and by simply pushing your down arrow button you can highlight the commentary link which then jumps you to the appropriate commentery page which feature a brief description of the commentary for that chapter.

Again these menus are very simple and you should have no problem moving through them at all ~

The Video Quality...

The Picture is awesome!!!

So far the colors are the BEST I've seen yet and DAMN the video just looks so clean.............

It's apparent that this was the result of a painstaking color correction process - the gamma levels have been adjusted, contrast and the color levels (was it done HuffyYUV) have all been restored. The color seems a bit red in some scenes but it is neither distracting or overdone this seems to be a side effect of the contrast changes, it does seem to be a bit overly white on the Tantive IV but like I said it's still one of thes best - IMHO

BUT as far as the general video quality... Under my DVD players zoom feature the quality holds up....
@ 2x zoom they still look very good @ 3x zoom you say damn this is a good transfer (good job on the the VBR and color correction is perfect!) - the colors really are that good and are even better then the actually laserdiscs IMHO -

The Audio Quality...

This is the best feature yet! - THE PCM track is better then the TR47 set - IF you crank up the TR47 set there is some noise in the audio stream.... THIS set has very little noise to no noise in the audio. It's a cleaner and smoother PCM audio track then ANY other set I've heard as it has the most natural sound.

2 audio formats/ 3 audio tracks

LPCM 2.0 @ 1536 kbps

WOW ~ This is a great sounding PCM and with the care that was taken in the conversion the matrixed surround track was reatained and BOY what beautiful playback you get.

AC3 Dolby Digital 5.1 - THE BEST 5.1 EVER ~ It really only sounds like a perfect conversion - there is NO fake rear steering just a WONDERFUL re-encode of the original PCM - CHEERS to you on that! (it's a little quite but most DD 5.1 is)

AC3 Dolby Digital 2.0 -
And the commentary is clean but a little loud compaired the rest of the video.

OVERALL -

I did not see or here any major or noticable errors in the video or the audio other then the contrast being a bit much - BUT that is me knit picking . There are no "missing" scenes and I do not recall even seeing a side flip or a disc change and from what I saw today

- the TR47 and the Dr. Gonzo set may well soon become things of the past.

UPDATE!

OKAY - Today I had a few friends over........

I did a blind test with 4 DVD versions of the OT. For the test I put in each of the DVD's and played the first 5 minutes of each film (as the first 5 minutes really do push the limits with all the white - so the colors really stand out on the scenes on the Tantive IV

I tested it on this gear -

Projector Playback -

Projection Panel: nView Spectra C - connected via SVGA
Video processer: ViewSonic NextVision N4 - connected via SVGA
Over Head Projector: 3M 9700 - 410w/4000 lumens

TV Playback -

TV: Apex 27" - connected via S-video
DVD 1: Mintek 1600
DVD 2: Apex AD-1500

Audio Playback

Decoded via PRO-LOGIC II + DTS NEO6

The PLII was the winner here ~ The DTS was a bit to quite and the conversion created extra noise

A/V Receiver 1: Onkyo TX-SR501 - connected via TOS-LINK
A/V Receiver 2: JVC RX-315 (used to power tactile transducers)
Front Speakers: NHT New Wave x2
Center Speakers: NHT New Wave
Rear Speakers: Kenwood KS-203 x2
Center Rear: Kenwood KS-203
Sub: KLH ASW10
Tactile Transducers: AURA "Bass Shaker" AST-1B-4 x2

All three films were tested on both my TV (first) then the Projector...
Again We watched the first 5-10 minutes and skipped around the disc for other scenes (Anchorhead, Vadrer+Ben's dual and the D-Star).

The end result was that everyone (all 5 of us including my wife ) picked the MeBeJedi set for BOTH audio and visual followed by the TR47 set then the Dr. Gonzo Set.

Want this set, I do

I do wonder, doesn't the PCM track take up a LOT of space ? and if you're encoding for a DVD-5 that leaves you with very little space for the video transfer, doesn't it ?

Or are you encoding for DVD-9 ? In the hope to have such a burner soon ?

Any chance we can get a sample or a teaser of your work ?

I genuinely hope you get rid of that terrible THX trailer. It's horrendous looking, overly long and (on the Doc Gonzo DVD's at least) not even skippable!

I agree. Its overly long, gives away the ending ( for the 4 people on the planet who have never seen Star Wars), and it sounds like shit. THX is supoosed to be an indication of some sort of quality presentation, and it doesnt make too much sense when is sounds like it was sourced from an 8bit MP3 recording of a scratched record.

It is the THX Laserdisc trailer. It's quite short, and gives away nothing from the films as far as I know.

Sorry, Im referring to the fan created THX trailer thats on the Dr Gonzo DVDs. Its Crap. If you actually wanted to do something cool... you could include vintage THX traielrs. I have the THX trailer that was original featured during Jedi's original theatrical run in select theaters. Its on the THX ULTIMATE DEMO DISC. Virtually all THX trailers are on that disc.

I already have all of the THX, Dolby Digital, DTS and SDDS trailers.

I may put the Wow! trailer on my supplemental DVD.

I apologize for the lack of updates lately. I've been juggling many personal issues lately, and have been trying to IVTC in bits and pieces. It's a tedious process to go frame-by-frame. When that is done, I will go back and remove imperfections in the frames, create a new master, and then create the 4X3 and 16X9 transfers.

2 pieces of good news....

1) My son survived his heart sugery.
2) The "donated" software arrived!

I have to go back to the hospital, but I just though I'd let you folks know I'm still around.

Give me some credit....at least I listed it second.

I also bought a second videocard, but 2000 is locking up when I use the second monitor. (I never had a problem with 98.)

Oh, and Derek is back home now. What a world we live in - when open-heart surgery can be done in a weekend. The wonder of it all.......

[EDIT] Wouldn't you know it - AVID requires XP.

Well, Mebejedi, I'm glad the stuff got there - There is a PAL VOB for your reference as well.
Are you running Windows 2000?
You will need to run XP if you want to use that software, all the new stuff that allows frame by frame corrections and so on is XP only.
XP has far superior Dual Monitor Support also. It's really the only PC OS to use for video work.

If you don't hav XP, drop me a line.

"There is a PAL VOB for your reference as well."

That would explain why the audio sounded odd. Thanks for the copy (of everything, in fact. I was beginning to worry, but you came through! . )

Oh, I know XP has its advantages, but I just feel more comfortable with 2000 right now. That being said, my friend is donating his 1.8 Ghz P4 to me (we bought our computers at the same time, and he just got a new AMD 64-bit system), so I may put XP on that one instead. This will also allow me to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

And yes, I may need to "borrow" XP as well.

Oh, and I finally got the second monitor working well enough. Video tends to break up, but I can limit playback to my main monitor. Now I can run Vegas and VirtualDub side-by-side (for the manual IVTC) and run the video preview separate from Vegas. Actually, the card has a VGA and DVI out (as well as TV out...if I can find a TV with composite-in, I can compare monitor-vs.-tv without having to burn a rewriteable. Ain't technology great?!?), so I may try to hook up a third monitor as well. LOL!

Too late - I've already sent it

You will really need XP to use any of the advanced tools - they simply will not install on anything else. You don't really *need* a TV with composite inputs, you can use a standard TV and run the composite out through the VCR first. If you calibrate the TV using video essentials it will still be good enough for a reference for gamma levels etc. It's just that you will see lots of dot crawl and colour bleed that won't really be there

The offer is still there to make you a Dual layer DVD-9 master if you send me the VOB's on two single layer DVD's.

Cheers
