Great thread BadAsh - will come in handy for a starting point for those wishing to find info on the various versions of the OT on dvd too.

Good work m8

I guess I should have posted this here:

What about Zion´s project? You should include those transfers too in this comparison.

Ps. I´m interested in seeing how the new MeBeJedi screens compare with the other versions. MBJ, come on now, send the fella your latest work...

Patience padawan... all great things come with time

Actually, the screnshots I have posted so far are from ANH and Zion is focussing his efforts mostly on ESB at the time so I don't have anything to post just yet.

That being said... expect a similar ESB screenshot fest coming later in the week and yes, this round will include shots from Zion's work

Zion, is this okay with you?
Author

Not a problem. Just don't use the ones that are on my site at the moment, as they are not from my faces transfer. I'll pm you with new screenshots, just let me know which frames you want.

The reason why I'm focusing on ESB right now is because I don't have a copy of the faces version of ANH. I've got one coming in today though, so I'll have some screenshots made up for those ANH frames this week.

And one suggestion if I may. For the ANH frames you have up, it would really be more comprehensive to have some different scenes represented. Perhaps instead of three frames from the same scene, you could have a few different ones that would display how well the transfers do with dark scenes, bright scenes, and colorful scenes.

Great feedback Zion... you are totally right. Those screenshots originally came from the "bootlegs" thread... I made all of those to match shots MeBeJedi had made. I'll see what I can do about adding in some more shots that show of the detail in some of the more dark or "black" scenes.

Zion, I will PM you later tonight about the ESB screenshots

The Tantive IV show the brightness and detail comparsions quite well, IMHO.

Some screenshots of the space battles (perhaps with stars in the background) would go down very nicely for comparing the darker scenes?

All great ideas. The majority of the screenshots shown here today come from a few weeks ago when I did some comparison shots for the MeBeJedi set. Since I don't have the MeBeJedi set I was just going off of what MBJ had posted himself.

What I will do now is go through and make another round of screenshots illustrating some of the darker scenes such as space battles and if I don't have the source material to get the same shots from MeBeJedi then I will just leave a placeholder and request shots from him.

I know Zion is going to be doing ANH next so I will coordinate with him later to get his ANH shots.

Thanks for the feedback guys... hopefully this thread will proove to be a great resource for us all.

Nice work with the comparison!

I still think the TR47 picture quality is the best, as ISOMIX has the white line, a more pronounced video echo effect (not as bad as Dr. Gonzo's though), and seems a little blurrier.

There are new pics in the "screenshots" thread.... no new scenes but we get a look at Zion's transfer

Zion... your shots look incredible. Very "faithful" to the old transfer... but without Lucas' tinkering. I'm very excited to see the final result!

Damn, those Zion screens look awesome! Anamorphic and still that sharp. MeBeJedi´s is also coming along beautifully. What I´d really like is when they are done, for someone to compare them in motion on a TV, to look for any kind of ghosting and such, also the colors (bands of colors or gradual). And yes it´s incredible how well the TR47 transfer still holds up compared to all those new ones. There is one big fault on those transfers though, and that is the greyish black bars in the transfer, instead of deleting them and let the computer add 100% black bars. And ofcourse having those 4 seconds of blackness in ESB is pretty bugging. I can´t wait to be able to sample those new transfers, they look so darn tasty. Mmmmm.....

Zion your work looks phenomenal. I am also looking forward to Mike's (MVERTA) professional restoration, Mverta's site with screencaps should be added too those screencaps look great, and Laserman is working on it as well. Very cool concept though. Good job Bad Ash. Zion why do you say we can't do an LD faces benchmark to compare these transfer along with potential restoration. Wouldn't that be the best way to see what is potentially lost in a transfer and what is added with color correction and clean-up? Its hard using the 2004 set as a mark when that cleanup process involves the 9th biggest supercomputer in the world with 1000's of Mac's daisychained...Lowry's work is pretty spectacular. I am greatly looking forward to these project for the O-OT though.
16 years I wait and this is what I get???

Can anyone explain why the TR47 screenshots are a bit more squished horizontally, compared to the other non-anamporphic versions? It's just slightly mis-shaped, and it bugs me a little. You notice it, right? Does it look that way whilst watching it?

I'm waiting for a TR47 set to arrive, and I'm wondering if I made the right choice.

Gavin-,

It all has to do with that little thing called aspect ratio. You'll notice that on both the TR47 and ISOMIX caps, they are both the same size. To my eye, they both appear to be straight transfers from the original source without any resizing. The reason they look squished is because the size of the pixels of 4:3 video are actually .9 rather than 1, if that makes any sense. On your television, they don't appear squished like that.

I only say that because a raw capture of the LD's looks really crappy to begin with and it will look different depending on who captures it and what software and hardware is used.

Not only that, but Lowry scanned the original negatives at high definition. Big advantage there. He says in his new Sound & Vision interview that using the earliest generation print is best, it has the most information in the picture. Has any bootlegger ever thought about using an original 35mm print from somewhere? They're probably hard to find, but there has to be some print that was used in pakistan or wherever, it was a widespread film with lots of prints made. They'd be beat up, but someone like mverta sounds like he has the means to do a professional restoration.

^ would be a very interesting project to do - though I imagine a full reel of the SW film would go for a few $$$

Thanks for the nudge there Jason.... you asked for it, you got it. Check out the "official" screenshots thread for new pics from the Farsight ANH transfer.

Okay folks, the ANH screenshots have about had it. I want to add some darker shots such as Opening Scroll, a Space Battle shot and of course at least one lightsaber shot and then ANH will be done.

Next up is ESB.

With that being said, I will remind everyone that some of the transfers listed in the current screenshots are active projects so aquiring screenshots for ESB and ROTJ may not be so easy but rest assured they will be added when possible.

Zion has provided me with updated ESB shots so I have those but I am not sure about MeBeJedi.

Speaking of MeBeJedi... please PM me about screenshots. I would like to get updated shots from your latest ANH transfer if possible. The ones I have posted are from an earlier "screener" so when you are ready to share your latest creation please let me know.

Oh yeah, if anyone has requests for specific ESB or ROTJ shots please let me know. I have a starting point with what Zion has provided but would love everyone's input.... no really, I would

Thanks
