Quoted in Amazing Stories, Issue 605 November 2004, “Star Wars comes home. The Classic Trilogy on DVD at Last” by Daniel Wallace:

“Getting the originals on DVD is about preservation,” argues Jay Sylvester, organizer of a petition that hopes to convince Lucasfilm to eventually releast the theatrical versions. So far his website, ww.originaltrilogy.com, has logged more than sixty thousand signatures. “I’ve never disputed Lucas’s right to change these films. I just hope someday he recognizes Star Wars is a permanent part of our culture, and it deserves to be preserved in its original form.”

James Greene agrees, noting that the trilogy couldn’t have been made without the work of “hundreds of talented people both on and off camera. Some of the changes that have been made to the films negate the hard work these people put into the trilogy. Besides,” he says “Greedo firing first makes such sens as Oswald acting alone.”

So far, Lucasfilm hasn’t announced any plans to relase the theatrical versions on DVD, and George Lucas has been cool on the concept when questioned in interviews. Even nostalgic holdouts might conclude that the current relese is the best presentation of the films likely to appear in the DVD format for the foreseeable future. Jay Sylvester admits that he’ll eventually buy a used copy, if only to check out the changes.

But if he buys used, none of the money he paid will go to LFL.

While that is true, I am looking at it from a "purity of my collection" point of view. I wouldn't want to sulley my collection with it. Just my two Lincolns.

Okay, that's a bit extremist. Just needed to put something in here.

I completely forgot about this. It was so long ago.

My feelings on purchasing the box set have changed since that interview. I hadn't watched Star Wars in a year and a half, and I was pretty anxious to see it again. I'd sold my LD players, but kept the 1995 THX LDs. Not being able to watch them made me more impatient I think.

I just acquired a CLD-99 this past weekend and watched ANH. I was VERY pleased by the image quality and no longer feel the need to buy the box set. The detail and color obviously aren't on par with the new DVDs based on the screenshots I've seen, but at smaller screen sizes (32" in this case) the LDs are very satisfying.

I've placed the box set in my Wal-Mart DVD rental queue though because I want to see the changes/problems for myself.

Yay! The good side of the Force has won out! At least insofar as this forum admin goes.

How is the Wal-Mart DVD rental service? I use Netflix and love it and you are the first person I know who is using Wally World. Do they have a good selection?
