MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released) — Page 5

I just did another DVD Santa convert of Balance, it's done and creating DVD data now, and I just realized - I did it at fullscreen, not widescreen! If it just turns out nonanamorphic I could care less, but....

I have both the Xvid and actual DVD version of BOTF. I checked the Xvid last night and realized that while it is widescreen, it appears to be pretty messed up. It is encoded as 16:9 anamorphic but with burned in black bars at the top and bottom. So, that makes me wonder if you should select 4:3 when encoding through DVD Santa. Not what I would want to do but that might be what you should do. I am tempted to try it tonight to see what happens. It just looks weird that if you load up the Xvid in PowerDVD it plays in Widescreen but with black bars on the top and bottom. Usually if a video rip is widescreen you will not see the top and bottom bars through a software player like PowerDVD. Of course since Star Wars is 2.35:1 and 16:9 TVs are 1.85:1 a small black strip will be displayed at the top and bottom but on your computer it should not show the black bars.

Very strange.

Hmm...no chapter for the end credits? Interesting

BadAsh -

No, that's the way all anamorphic DVD's are - their true aspect ratio is 1.78:1 and they have black bars superimposed on the top and the bottom to make them the correct aspect ratio. If no TVs are wider than 1.78, why make any DVDs wider than 1.78? Most XviDs get rid of the bars because they take up image quality. Case in point, my THX 1138 XviD (from the DC DVD) doesn't have those bars and neither does my uncut-Japanese-version of KILL BILL: VOL. 1 (and that's also missing subs ). So that's why the XviD of Balance is like that.

HOWEVER, the brightness is way outta whack (far too bright) on the XviD (I watch all movies on my TV at level 32 or 34 brightness (of 64), and I found myself watching my burn of Balance at 10!) and it does look squished vertically quite a bit (emphasized by the fact that DVD Santa made more bars to fill the whole 1.78:1 range when the original video wasn't that size).

On a side note, doing it in fullscreen didn't matter at all; it made it widescreen anyway...

And it does play on all my players now

About the MagnoliaFan Edits:

I was glad enough, to see the first part as XVID Version, which I liked much, ad the picture is rather good. But it was merely impossible to get them tranferred to mpg2, to make a quality DVD.

Could anyone provide me with a copy of the DVD Version fo MagnoliaFans Edits of EP1 and EP2; I was trying to get them via Bittorrent, but I cannot afford the high rate.

I live in Germany and would like to hear from you. Pls contact me via e-ail.

Thank you very much !!!!

This is my first post to these forums.

I have spent the last hour (at Work no less!) searching for these "phantom edits" and such, and it seems Magnoliafan's are the best and most highly regarded out there, and are generally thought to be superior edits to the theatrical “official” releases… so now I’m left with only one question: How do I get copies of these crafty reworkings???

I’m sorry if this is covered elsewhere- my password just dropped into my box, and I couldn’t wait to find out.

Thanks

Well, all the XviD needs is to be darkened quite a bit and to be stretched to 1.78:1 rather than the 2.05:1 that it is. Rik, could you try and make Clone War in 16:9 rather than 45:22 or whatever it was? It would make things much easier...

there is a fan re-edit of AOTC?? i didnt know about this or that 1 even existed. i was aware of the TPM MagFan 1.2 reedit. hey, MF .... how much would it cost to get the reedits of TPM and AOTC from you? thanks

I have a question regarding the second Magnolia Fan Edit, entitled "The Clone War."

I have read elsewhere that Magnolia Fan is thinking about changing somethings in this particular edit.
Is this true and should I wait for the finished version?

Believe it or not, I'm really excited about what Magnolia Fan has done here. I really enjoyed the Phantom Edit, and it just seems from what I have read, that Magnolia Fan has gone WAY beyond anything the original "Phantom Editor" has ever done.

Thanks for reading.

* = Chapter Stop Titles taken from Hal9000's excellent DVD Inserts

IMHO they have both been edited and put together extremely well - there are no jarring edited scenes which stick out. The picture and sound quality are that of DVD standard (which is what both MF Edits were sourced from).

Lines of dialogue changes, alien's voice dubbing, subtitle changes - which alter the story somewhat, length of scenes, musical score changes, sound effects changes, the re-arranging of certain scenes, scene omissions and insertion of deleted scenes all feature in both films.

These MagnoliaFan Edits keep the Prequel Trilogy (so far) more in-keeping with the Original Trilogy in terms of the feel and pace of the films.

There are various fan/home-made DVD covers to go with the MFE releases.

MagnoliaFan is planning an MF Edit of Star Wars: Episode III – ‘Revenge Of The Sith’, though obviously this will not happen for some time...

More details can be found in the very 1st post - in here:-

i'm giddy over the new re-re-edits of the magfan stuff.
any anticipated dates?
Author

I'm not really redoing Balance right now, just CW, though a dual layer version with commentary will eventually be made.
The changes aren't really too major.
Just cleaning up a few transitions that I wasn't really happy with, fixing the crawl, adding one extra scene that I couldn't figure out how to get to flow right at the time, and touching up little stuff. Oh, and if anyone can get a "Die Jedi Scum!" audio capture, I'll try to add that in.
It'll also be dual layer, so the quality will hopefully be a little improved over the last one, along with adding a commentary track.
I may add an additional Jar Jar line in one spot for the DL Balance, but unless new deleted scenes surface, I probably won't tweak it too much until the new dvd version comes out.
I can't really promise a timeline on the project, just sort of when I get done with it.
I'm also assisting on one other project with someone here, but I'm not really at liberty to discuss it unless they decide to let the cat out of the bag, first.

i like the idea of a commentary. it would be cool for both movies, i think. but wouldn't that give away who you are? or at least who you're not? unless it's a subtitled commentary.

it'll be big news here when you're finished with them, so i'm sure i wont miss anything. good luck with the duel layer versions.
excited.

Hi there,

I more or less found this site by accident and when i read about what has been created - or more corectly recreated here I just went nuts. I've dreamed about somebody doing something like this to Phantom for years - and must say I'd love to see the results. Could someone fill me in please on how one may go about getting to see these flicks? Can you download them? (Bit torrent? DC++?).

Anyway even without seeing the resulsts I must tip my hat to Magnoliafan for doing what so many other fans have never had the technical skills to try to do.

I look forward to your cut of Revenge of the Sith!

I just finished my full comparison between Attack of the Clones and The Clone War.

Since I'm least familiar with ATOC than all other Star Wars films, I couldn't always remember scenes that were cut or recognize changes easily.
Some scenes I noticed were cut out was the Jedi Library sequence, most of the Anakin/Padme scenes on Naboo, and the Yoda/Obi/Windu exposition.
The "Love time" scenes on Naboo were cut and Padme's family was reinserted in it's place. The Yoda/Obi/Windu scene was replaced with the deleted scene between Obi and Mace when Obi takes off to Kamino.

I do feel that TCW *is* a better film than AOTC.

To put it simply, TCW is closer to AOTC than BOTF is to TPM.

My stance on revising fan edits.
