My LD set is basically sparkle free, but you are a long way away.
I would try and get a DE set that is in good order, the video noise floor is considerablt lower than the faces set.

After some quick experimenting, I am feeling a little more confident about making a de-specialised edition. We got another LD player in today, a sony MDP, and the quality via its RGB output is stunning, I've never seen the laserdisc image look so good - ever so slightly softer, but MUCH more detail evident, so a mild sharpen brings it much closer to the DVD release.
I tried running the DVD out via analogue into the same capture system we are using, and then you end up with something that would be able to be mixed with the laserdisc footage without jarring the viewer too badly.

Basically I am now thinking I will recapture the LD version again from the sony, get a hold of a US OT DVD release (any one got one spare and capture it into the system via RGB analogue.

I intend to keep the soundtrack from the LD release, I like the new sound on the DVD, but it is far too different score wise.
Then I'll go through the LD version and replace the video with the video from the DVD where applicable and match the sources as closely as possible. The star wars 'wipes' actually make this process work really well, the wipe distracts the viewers eye, so you don't have a hard cut from new to old footage - it makes the transition a whole lot less obvious.
For some scenes we are going to try painting out the offending CG (Most of my work is in scene reconstruction and digital rig removal...its what I do)

i know it sounds nuts, but after a few tests, I am feelign a lot more confident that I can produce a really good looking OT that I can enjoy watching on my big screen, without getting annoyed by the new bits. It may mean some slight enhancements get left in, but that everything I hate about the re-release will be gone.

Now all I gotta do is get me a region 1 release disc...

With all of the talk of the Dr. Gonzo version, the TR47 version, and now the upcoming MeBeJedi version, why is no one talking about the Farsight version that has recently appeared on MySpleen.

Is it any good. How does it compare? He describes it as:

Major differences in this version compared to others are Anamorphic video, ac3 sound, improved video bitrate, and an extremely high amount of care taken to ensure that the result is as good as possible given the source (an old film print on analog medium).

specs:

Definitive Original Edition (NOT Special Editions)
Video: ~4500kbps 3-pass CCE encoded
anamorphic 23.97 fps
Audio: 192kbps Dolby Surround ac3

Source is the 9-disc LaserDisc set, the best available source for these versions of the movies. Encoded through S-Video, with great care to get 0 dropped frames, correctly merge the 6 disc-sides per film, properly convert the framerate, deinterlace the video, clean up analog noise w/o blurring the image, normalize the sound, and fix the various field-order errors in the original source. Basically, it's unlikely you'll see a better version of these films any time soon.

The 23.97 fps is notable because it is what MeBeJedi is doing... Plus he's done all three. I am impatient, after all.

At 4.5gb a piece, I can't download all three movies for each of the three sets off BitTorrent. Which one is best?
For what it is worth, I have a 34" HDTV widescreen CRT...

Thanks in advance.

I'm wondering if you could capture a still from the new DVD's and a still from the LD's, load both in something like Photoshop, and have it match the colors on the LD still to the DVD still. I could be a little off base with it being a photo program instead of a video program, but I hope you know what I mean. Hopefully, if is something that can be done without it having to be done frame by frame as the time involved would be tremendous.

"Video: ~4500kbps 3-pass CCE encoded"

What software does 3-pass?

"Audio: 192kbps Dolby Surround ac3"

ONLY 192 kbps? That's not nearly as much. I ran mine at the full 448kbps. You'd think a 3-pass MPEG would leave room for the PCM. I know my 2-pass left room for 3 soundtracks.

"Encoded through S-Video, deinterlace the video"

As great as this may sound, it could be two strikes against this set. S-Video rarely helps the LD pic, and de-interlacing can introduce more visual artifacts than were originally there. In fact, as Patrick pointed out, S-video can introduce even more dot-crawl than is found in a composite transfer.

"Plus he's done all three. I am impatient, after all."

Still finalizing some aspects. Tell me what you think.

(These are untouched captures: 1st attempt versus latest attempt. No filters or modifications.)

BTW, apparently IVTC works much better in VD, versus VDMod. Tremendously better results!

That's it, I've had enough of this.... now yer just toying with us

MeBeJedi with each and every new screen cap you show it keeps looking better and better. Are you taking orders yet

Seriously though, the latest tweaks you have done are really revealing quality similar to the "offical" DVDs. This is a great acomplishment... good work

Like I said, there were lots of "little things" I wanted to fix. Even though I haven't gotten the Video Essentials laserdisc yet, I tried one more time to dial in some good numbers for the video capture, and I'm very pleased with what I got. I may go ahead and make the DVD with this version.

It'll be interesting to see how far the video is out of sync from my soundtrack, since there are a few more frames now. It's not a huge difference, but it's there.

(And those lightsabers look pretty damn good now, don't they? )

I can´t bloody wait to play those MeBeJedi transfers on my dvd player. I´m sure they´re gonna look and sound awesome, better than the TR47 ones dare I say?? Who knows, keep up the good work and I hope you can "let go" at a certain point and release those transfers to us OT nutters to enjoy soon. Lucas sure as hell can´t let go (but then again he has lost his marbles), but I believe you can.

PS. MBJ, any estimate as to when you´ll be finished with all three movies (before christmas?) People on here are going crazy for this!

"any estimate as to when you´ll be finished with all three movies"

Well, now that I've got this stuff dialed in, it really shouldn't take too long. Assuming the rest of my life goes as planned - 3 weeks to a month?

No promises.

Hello everyone. I am working on transfers on all three from the definitive LDs to DVD for my personal copy/use. The video will be captured into mpeg-2 via S-Video using PC hardware, the sound will remain in its original stereo format. I have very high expectations given the equipment I am using. Please PM me to show interest.

Try a sample capture with composite video as well, and compare it to the S-video capture. you might be surprised.

Yep, that's right.
The Laserdisc is encoded in composite video, so if the Y/C splitter circuitry in your player is not superb, then you will actually get a better signal via Composite han via S-Video.
If you can get an RGB player, try it - the higher bandwidth on the RGB connector tends to give you less dot crawl and better definition, but once again, only if the players splitting circuitry is up to the task.
*Most* laserdisc players give a better result via composite.

Care to tell me where I can even get a cheap capture board with RGB input?

Maybe this one?

It's like $280 direct form the manufacturer... probably cheaper if you check around a bit. Considering what it does, I think that under three hundred is pretty good. Of course, that was from five minutes of searching, so there's bound to be something else out there. And it's USB2.0, so no need to open up your case.
For as much as some people claim to hate what Star Wars has become, they sure seem incapable of shutting up about it.

Well then, I guess you need to redefine "cheap". We're talking about A/V capture devices here, that are capable of producing some very clear captures... I think $300 is cheap, considering you can easily spend thousands of dollars for other models.

I think I remember you saying something like you spent $40 on your current capture device? Well, if that's the case then you're probably not going to like the costs on any RGB capable devices. That, and I'm still amazed at the quality you were able to sqeeze out of that thing. (I shudder to think of what you could accomplish with a higher end device! )

I would suggest you go ahead with the captures you're making now, since they're looking sweet. And maybe set aside a few bucks here or there to do a second run-through on RGB when you get the chance. The learning experience from this capture should help you send the quality on the RGB capture through the roof.

I do hope MeBejedi will make ESB anamorphic, because both Dr Gonzo's and Farsight's versions don't have Leia's welding scene.

MeBeJedi -

I hope you start a thread on your 'SW OT MeBeJedi dvd version' - there seems to be a lot of interest in them and it's getting harder to keep up with the news and info on them in this huge 'bootleg dvd' thread and others.

Maybe good for an FAQ too so you don't have to repeat yourself answering the same questions over and over?

MeBeJedi, I'm sorry if my eyes are playing tricks on me. From the screenshots yesterday, which are your versions? The clear ones (or are those the DVD versions) or the other ones? If those are the clear ones, those are looking great!
