Star Wars: The Old Republic

Those who plays/played it. What is your opinion of it?

I generally love it. Mainly because it is considerably story-focused and because it is probably the first Star Wars game where I can actually play an imperial/Sith (I always preferred Empire, to be honest).

I have played through all 8 classes and my favourite are Imperial Agent, Sith Warrior and Sith Inquisitor. Yes, as I said I don’t like Republic and Jedi. The only one I like on the republic side was smuggler.

I have some complaints though. I kind of dislike some of the planet designs. For example I hate Belsavis, and to some extent Alderaan, since they looks like something from Lord of the Rings. I also think Nar Shaddaa should have more darker tone (I resent developers turning it into “Las Vegas of Star Wars”) but now I got used to it. I also hate the whole Revan storyline. It is sort of ridiculous. They should just left the character alone and not ruin the mystery of his departure in KOTOR. Finally, I absolutely hate the whole “almighty” Emperor guy. I think they went far beyond the point of “good taste” with him.

On the other hand, I really like Tatooine design. It visually perfect. Maybe that’s where my obsession with clear blue sky and nice desert scenery come from (referring to Gilbert Taylor thread discussion). 😃

I was in the SWTOR beta and it was rather fun. I played exclusively Empire and played up to Belsavis twice, the first time right before a beta wipe and the second time I burnt out really hard there (mainly due to lack of friends to play with).

After the game launched, it managed to pull in a lot of my old friends/guildmates from SWG and other games, but not many people stuck it out once the content dried up (at the time there was your character story missions, then once those ended it was basically either broken crap PvP or endless raids). I myself didn't because I had terrible internet at the time and it made it impossible to do anything (I remember racking up so many deaths due to lag on the falling Rakata platforms).

It was a fun game. Ultimately it was just a Star Wars-Themed WoW clone and WoW never could hold my attention for long. I think it also suffered from the fact that too many people were hoping for a relaunch of "SWG, only better", which the game was not at all. I also think people were annoyed at having to play with systems that WoW had and had perfected. And I think that the fact that their content was so big (in terms of scale and time spent to make it with all the voice acting and whatnot) hurt the game because it did take a while for there to be new content after the original story was done. Beyond that, it was hurt by subpar endgame content at launch and the subsequent scramble to fix it, as well as the fact that the storylines were basically meant for a singleplayer game (id est, every bounty hunter becomes the best in the galaxy and has the same set of companions), and terribly linear planets and storylines.

Beyond all that, I did greatly enjoy my time playing it with my pals. Working out how to get holocrons and all was fun, as was what little exploring there was to do, and the stories were masterfully crafted and incredibly fun to play and progress in. I've heard there has been a lot of improvement in the game since I quit playing (a few months after it launched), and the fact that it's free to play is also very tempting, but I'm not a fan at all of how steep the restrictions on free accounts are, and I feel like veteran players like me, who not only preordered and played at launch, but also beta tested the game, should get some kind of status or some sort of bone thrown to us to make coming back a bit more worth it.

I see what you mean. I didn't have the problems you mentioned because I really don't care about MMO side of the game (end game PVE, PVP, interaction with other players). All I care is the single-player content (i.e. class storylines) which is great and extremely extensive. In fact I tried hard not to interact with other players, because that kind of pulls you out of the story and Star Wars universe back into the real life. So basically when I finished one character's storyline I just moved to a new character.

So in this respect SWTOR great differs from WoW. I could never play WoW because it has little to no storyline content. I really don't see fun doing some PVE/PVP stuff with other players, which WoW is all about. I would say SWTOR is primary a single-player game with a some MMO aspects.

It is one hundred percent a single-player game, which is why I'm totally baffled as to why they made it into an MMO when it wasn't built to be one.

Having played from the beginning, the class story stuff was top-notch Bioware stuff, very interesting and engaging, whereas a lot of the multiplayer MMO aspects felt dated, shoehorned in, and almost like an afterthought because a lot of them were oldhat or just didn't work from the get-go.

They should honestly have just taken all the work they did on the classes and stories and made a single-player game and left the MMO for a real MMO that would have broken some ground aside from the story aspect.

Well a simple reason why they made it also MMO is so they could squeeze more money out of it.

Yeah, I'm sure it was commanded from on high at EA, but still... I feel like a lot of potential was lost in that.

Well this might sound selfish but I got what I wanted, an extensive single player game with great story content and a wonderful Star War experience. As for the MMO fans, well bad luck. :)

I don't think we would get this much of storyline content in a single game if they didn't make it MMO. They couldn't sell a single player game for $200 (which I think is at least what the storyline content is worth). But with MMO and subscription they could cover their investment.

I still find it incredibly hard to justify making a (not great) MMO out of a single player game. If I was just in it for the SP, I'd be annoyed that I was having to pay extra money per month for features I didn't care about, and as a person who wanted a good MMO, I was annoyed that I paid for a single player game with derivative, crappy MMO elements.

That said, I haven't played it in ages, so it may be good now. But I'm incredibly miffed that I'll be playing it while being punished for not paying after having participating in the community since its announcement, beta-testing it, preordering it, and subscribing to it for a good amount of time. Maybe that makes me an entitled, whiny gamer, but give me some incentive to come back, don't punish me for it.

Well the point I am making is that the initial price of the game is extremely low and in no way reflects the actual value of the single-player content. I think the amount of story content is worth, as I said, at least $200 (which is 4 times the initial game value). The rest is paid with the subscription. So in reality, as a SP-only person, you don't really pay anything extra. You just gradually pay what you didn't pay in the beginning (unless one is a really slow player).

But yes, generally you are right. I would probably still rather pay the higher initial price and then be able to play it whenever I wanted (even when they close the serves eventually).

It was definitely a fun game, and I feel like I got my money's worth out of it. In fact, I would probably play more if the free to play restrictions weren't ludicrous... I may yet anyway, just to see what's new.

I enjoyed the single-player campaign for a while. But by the time I got to Tatooine, it felt like I had to do too much grinding. And the combat system boils down to "click here to kill" (if your companion doesn't get in the way).

Author

Well at least it is porbably the first MMO where you grind by doing the storyline (a proper storyline at least).

I never played it. Tried reading some of the novel & comic tie-ins, but that only served to piss me off.

Most of the novels aren't good. Especially Revan and Fatal Alliance have some ridiculous stuff in it. The game itself, on the other hand, is very good (in my opinion of course). As I said, I really enjoyed Imperial Agent and the two Sith class storylines. And it is not just about storylines, the game is well designed and if you want to have a good visual experience of Star Wars universe, SWTOR is currently the best opinion.

But if you are not really a gamer (ie you don't like games in general) then I probably wouldn't suggest it.

I'm pretty much just a retro gamer (and a moderate one, at that), and I'm completely tired of all the "Jedi vs Sith" hoohah, so it's a safe bet that this game probably wouldn't be for me.

I was actually reluctant to play it too (mostly because I don't play MMOs). But then my brother bought me the game and I gave it a try. First thing I liked was that it wasn't a MMO if I chose to ignore MMO aspects (they didn't really get into my way). Then when I started playing it for a while it pulled me in. :)

It is far from just "Jedi vs Sith". I mean you can choose to play Smuggler, Imperial Agent, Bounty Hunter or Republic Trooper classes and there will be only occasional references to Jedi or Sith. Imperial Agent class storyline is imo the best in the game. It is sort of an "evil James Bond" (kind of a lame description but okay). Smuggler class is basically mix of Han Solo, a pirate and a criminal (if you wish to play it rough). I don't think you could actually play these things in Star Wars games before.

And even I am not a big fan of "Jedi vs Sith", but still playing a Sith is a new experience as well.

It's pretty fun, and considering it's F2P, it'd be worth checking out for the story if nothing else.

It's just nothing special as MMOs go. In my opinion.

A bigger disgrace to Star Wars than the prequels. The Republic became the Galactic Empire, not the Sith Empire. Palpatine was not a reincarnation of somebody who lived thousands of years before he was born. If Disney makes pre-TPM movies, do NOT maintain ANY continuity with this vile disgrace to "canon".

I really only want the material related to the aborted Kotor III can you play the crappy mmo and get that?

I mean Like Revan's story, and the story of the character in Kotor II finding out about why Revan went to the unknown regions.

Well as for video games by far the biggest disgrace to Star Wars is Force Unleased. Yes SWTOR is not perfect but still it is generally better than most EU sources. It is certainly far from dumb stuff like Dark Empire novel etc.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has a new developer

In a BioWare blog, the developer stated it’s moving development on the Star Wars MMO to Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot studio Broadsword.

'The Star Wars MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is changing development studios. In a developer blog on the BioWare website, BioWare general manager Greg McKay wrote that while EA will remain the game’s publisher, active development will move from BioWare to Broadsword — the studio known for its work on Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot.

“Players will continue to enjoy the SWTOR they know and love,” McKay wrote. “There are also exciting new features planned that the team is not quite ready to talk about yet, but suffice it to say that players can expect improvements and new content into the future.”

SWTOR’s studio move was long rumored. Earlier this month, IGN reported that EA and Broadsword signed a letter of intent indicating that SWTOR would indeed be changing developers. In a statement to IGN, EA wrote:

“We’re evaluating how we give the game and the team the best opportunity to grow and evolve, which includes conversations with Broadsword, a boutique studio that specializes in delivering online, community-driven experiences. Our goal is to do what is best for the game and its players.”

In addition to that statement, McKay posted on the SWTOR forums reassuring players that the game would still be actively supported. “All future content updates are also moving forward as planned.”’

I know they are denying the game is going into to “maintenance mode”, but it sure seems like it is.

Fans on their forum have done their homework, and think it will be dead soon, that it has been mistreated for a while now, note the layoffs (it will be around half the number of devs over the past few years; 80 down to 40?), that Broadsword have a history of being the place where games go for “maintenance mode” too, and Broadsword’s silence on the issues, questions and in general:

https://forums.swtor.com/topic/929816-an-update-on-the-development-of-swtor

“Don’t tell anyone… but when ‘Star Wars’ first came out, I didn’t know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you’ve planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories - let’s call them homages - and you’ve got a series.” - George Lucas

Author
Time

That is sad to see, and for what seems to be still a popular game. Those posts on the forum; the lack of information and updates, and general feeling that this is the “maintenance mode” end for the game, sad to see fans still treated like that.

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas
