Customized Tins/ Paul Champagne

I am glad that I could "accidentally" be of some assistance to this great designer. I remember finding his site once and then forgetting where I found it until now. I am also actually considering and order of at least 2 tin sets for my stuff. Please let Mr. Champagne know that I hope he nails this guy to the wall, if he can. It is truly a shame that someone is ripping him and the fans off. On a plus note, it is cool that those of us here have a better chance of owning some of these great pieces at a much more comfortable price

I opened this as a new post so all here on the board could respond in one place. Regarding my quote of my own post.....I contacted Mr. Paul Champagne personally and this was his response.......(partial)

Hello Shawn, You guys have a lot of very talented artists on that board(way to go originaltrilogy.com forum - whoohoo). If anyone is interested in designing some art for a full size case that could be numbered and limited to your members, let me know. That is certainly a project I would be honored to undertake. Thanks again for contacting me.

Paul

What are your thoughts and ideas on this.....it would be a momentous oppurtunity to have a tin "specially designed" for board members and to honour what we love most about Star Wars......the OT!!!! and this forum (Of Course.........)

This sounds SWEET!!!!

NO it would be an HONOR to have him to slip cases for our designers!

I have an cover set I think that really fits with the definitve LD boxset and MAN it would look GREAT - In one of Pauls cases!!!!!!

I'd wanna keep them on the down-low for now (so...no sneek peeks yet) + The covers I'm thinking of are a amalgamate of both mine and the Cerebro covers (I think these may be the best covers EVER)

PM me the details like the size required, layout and formats he would need!

I have an idea for the tin. I'd need some more hi-res art though.

In fact the hell with my own ideas, one of my friends is a professional graphics designer - I'll force him to do something spectacular - if I can get enough art. I reckon he'd be down for the job. Now who's been holding out on me? I know Rik's got some art, Rik do you think you could torrent it?
Author

I'd hook you up - not as a torrent as I don't wanna abuse my uploaded status

MAYBE I can send you a CD or something with what art I have....

Would it be a good idea to have designs from a few different people and vote for it?

That's what the forum at www.macrossworld.com did. They designed some gorgeous cases for Macross. Check Pauls site for those. If this were to happen, we'd definitely need designs reflecting the OT especially. Something that no SE disc could rightfully occupy.

We actually designed two of them. They sure look nicer than the official box and the preveous one he had designed. We're working on a Macross Plus box as well(I have that on video so it's no use to me), so if you have any ideas, check out the thread on that forum. Here's the link to that thread, which has pics of the two, 12 disc boxes (Macross TV = 9 discs. then one disc for the 20th annaversary DVD, the FX bootleg of Macross: Do You Remember Love, and Macross: Flashback 2012).

I really am glad that this took off. I think voting would be a great way to do this.......and Mr. Champagne's compliments aside, this board deserves something nice like this to compliment it's intentions and beliefs.

The OT RULES!!!!

Just A Note:

I e-mailed Mr. Champagne back and let him know of the positive results his offer had. I mentioned the interest in custom designs by board members and asked him if he had any ideas to forward them so we could look and see if there is some middle ground in this.

I would SO love it if we could make this happen.........I'm think about something that was heard I'm sure by most of us when we were younger......"When one door closes, another one opens......PLZ, think good thoughts....

Oh HELL yes!!!!!!

I totally want to do this! That being said, I'd like to see something more reminiscent of the original movie posters, rather than the Definitive Collection LD's (especially since my set was made from the Faces set. )

Now the real problem we're going to have is agreeing on whether it holds 3 or 4 DVD cases.

Okay you all, here is my latest message from Paul. Take a read and lets see where this goes. It is a very reasonable offer I believe.....and if enough of us get on the train, he will lower the price. Keep those creative juices flowing.

The OT RULES!!!!

I'm glad it's working out.
I think you should maybe agree on a set of covers and then design the case to match and/or complement.

Until you tell me how many Amaray the case is to hold, I won't be able to give you the dimensions for the spine or top but the sides panels for an Amaray case need to be 1659 X 2300 pixels @ 300 dpi

These dimensions are for full coverage: edge to edge and top to bottom of the 3 main panels. If your design calls for an empty border around the artwork, you should allow for it.

On a side note, it would be important to get an idea of how many people are interested in getting a case. If we get enough interest, I'm prepared to cut you guys a deal. A numbered and limited custom case usually runs between $40 and $45, but again, if we have enough interest, I'll keep the price @ $30

I hope this will help the project get started.

And thanks to you for stepping up

I would be down with getting one of these if the design was right and it held four amarays.

My 1st choice would be to design the box around the vertical sabre artwork, but I'm pretty open to anything that looks real good.

I had Paul send me all the dimensions before, here they are:

Front/Back: 1659 x 2300

Side (3-case): 600 x 2300
Top (3-case): 600 x 1659

Side (4-case): 768 x 2300
Top (4-case): 768 x 1659

300 DPI
TIFF (preffered format)

I'm really not fussed going with 3 or 4, I think 4 is a good idea though.

I think the original poster art would be the best option as it deliniates the classic trilogy. I always liked the art on the early 90's box set with the three posters blended together. Another obvious option is the 1995 set, but I don't think we have many faces fans, do we?

I can always whip up some original art, but that would take time, especially in my final semester before graduation.

It should hold four. I intend to make a fourth "extras" DVD as well.

Also, maybe it could have "WWW.ORIGINALTRILOGY.COM" on it as well?

"nah, no branding."

What? It's not like it says McDonalds. He's making this tin for people at this site, and people go to this site because they love the OT. What better way to promote the version we love the most?
