No problem, glad that you do.


Though this does bring up a greater problem. Among fans here at the site and elsewhere, that prefer the OT over the SE and this upcoming DVD, do you find it ethical to watch in the first place place and to in many cases keep a pirated version of the Star Wars Trilogy that you will not buy? (Assuming you're not buying, I am so really only the first part of the question applies, in which case I find it ethical because I will be buying them.)


EDIT: Not saying in my case that I prefer the OT over the other 2 mind you, I don't. I like them equally, I think they each have their respective strengths and weaknesses.

I'd like to think it's OK to simply watch the DVD rip to compare between the two and such, before deciding whether or not to buy them.

I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

Whats not to buy. This is the Star Wars trilogy. We all know the Star Wars trilogy is worth owning.

That's why I already own it.

The Original Star Wars Trilogy.

Sure the new DVDs have much better quality, but some of the changes just make it not worth it. I'm deciding if it's worth my $50 or not.
(Also I'm scared that if I do own it, it would take away from my viewings of the original, better versions. )

I never had the nerve to make the final cut.

It all depends on which version is worth owning, as it seems the terminology is nowadays. It's no different than deciding whether or not to buy a director's cut of a film.

I've always been a big supporter of changing the ESB Emperor scene to Ian McD, but now that I've seen how they handled it:

However, as cool and mysterious Clive Rivell is, for some reason GL didn't bring him back for RotJ, and we got Ian. HE is now the Palpatine of the Saga, and to keep the original in there just wouldn't be right. But if they were going to change stuff around, this is the way it should have been done:

VADER
What is thy bidding, my master?

EMPEROR
There is a great disturbance in the Force.

VADER
I have felt it.

EMPEROR
I have no doubt, the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker.

VADER
How is that possible?

EMPEROR
Search your feelings, Lord Vader, you will know it to be true. The Force is strong with him. He could destroy us.

VADER
If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally.

EMPEROR
Yes, he would be a great asset. Can it be done?

VADER
He will join us or die, master.

Just a simple re-edit of the existing scene, taking out repetitive and unecessary dialogue. I'd also alter the music to the Emperor's theme.

Clive Rivell only did the voice of the Emperor. The original emperor was an old women with chimppanze eyes. Why anyone would want a women and a chimp to be the Emperor is beyond me. Ian Mcdarmid also has a much cooler voice the Clive Rivell.

See, I'm starting to like the changes. Yeah I love the old film, and I mean I love them. SW has been in my life since I was 6. That's a long time man.
But with these new changes, he's only trying to make all 6 films fit.
Fair play to the man.
If I was a kid watching all 6 films in a row. I would think WTF??
I garantee(sp?)((I'm so wasted tonight)) you that come 2007, well have a super box set ala Aliens, with both versions of the films. Old and new - The Archival edition!

I'm well aware of how the original Emperor was brought to life, but when you compare the original scene with the 2004 version, the Rivell/Old Lady/Chimpanzee trio kick Ian's ass. Not only does the 1980 Emperor actually look more like McDiarmid than he does himself, but he just seems so out of it the entire time. And this whole fiasco begs the question: Lucas knew Palpatine was going to have to appear in-the-flesh at some point, so why did he make him such a jumble of parts in ESB? Furthermore, why wasn't Rivell cast as the Emperor in RotJ?

Actually that's going to happen anyway, no matter what further tweaks Lucas makes to the OT. I mean, the prequels are based on the assumed knowledge of the OT. Imagine not knowing anything about the Star Wars universe yet and sitting down to watch TPM: What the hell is a Jedi? "Be mindful of the Force", what's that? What are those lasersword things? How are those Jedi using telekinesis? The list goes on. Furthermore, when you get to the OT: Obi-Wan is such a liar! Why does this Tarkin guy get to boss around Vader? What the hell is wrong with Yoda? You see, these things just weren't thought out very well. Vintage Lucas understood this, as evidenced by Vader's physical choking of Captain Antilles in ANH. Why didn't he just use the Force as he did throughout the rest of the trilogy? The answer is simple: the Force hadn't been explained yet. So, despite Revisionist Lucas' claims that the saga is ment to be viewed in order, you simply can't do it that way.

to DJR... i simply downloaded ROTJ for comparison sake and merely skimmed through the movie...
its no longer on my computer and i will never own a copy of these DVD's (unless he does end up releasing the OT)

then i would probably purchase them for comparison sake only...

That's cool to hear Luke and if I were in your shoes, that's how I also would approach it. I was just curious, gauging the general mood of the members and everything.

well thats the main reason i purchased the SE too...
was for comparison sake... although i prefer the original versions over any other...
i still enjoy seeing how Star Wars evolves...

but without the OT preserved...
theres no such thing as Star Wars evolving...
because we now have nothing to compare it to....

What a glorious day September 21 could have been. Those are some amazing pics of the cover art (the inserts are surprisngly tasteful). Oh well.

Am I the only one who finds the cover art rather lame? And not just these DVDs, but the prequels too. There's been so much good poster art over the years, but they choose a cut and paste photoshop job? Lame. I've seen fan covers FAR superior and classy looking.

i think the inserts look kinda cool and same with the back of the DVDs...

but im with Commander Courage...
the covers for those and the PT dvds are just horrible...
but i guess they kinda suit the quality product your getting inside..

Finally we got video of the new Jabba. Seeing him in motion he looks a bit stif. I don't know if its just a slow connection but I hope this problem doesn't come up on the DVD. Still he definutly looks much better then before and the scene is much better. The new Han and Greedo shot show that Greedo does not shoot first on the DVD. They now appear to shoot at the same time. A compromise with all the 10 people who enjoyed that change. Also Hans line of "Yes I bet you have" have been restored to its original form. Again it was best in its original form.

Wow. I can't even say that the new jabba is an improvement.

Looks like utter crap to me. I still prefer it not being there.

It is an improvement. But it isn't hard to improve on utter crap. Just my two Lincolns.

I can't believe they still have the "tail stomp" in there. I thought that was being cut. I know it makes sense, continuity wise, but it always bugged the hell out of me.

And I love how Han is the same in English and Huttese. Cracks me up.

I still think the scene should be left out.
