OT bootleg DVD reviews — Page 4

The scene was missing from the first release of the ´93 Definitive Edition Laserdisc, which was then deleted. They re-issued it later with the restored footage. Seems that the Anamorphic set was made from that first release and the TR47 set from the re-issue because his set most defo has that Leia scene.

- Now somebody out there is hopefully working on a new anamorphic set sourced from the right LD version. Leia welding is just to darn sexy to be missed!

+1 for the TR47 set. I just received his "deluxe" 7 disc set (8 discs when including the CD-R with printable artwork), and I have to say that I am very, very pleased. Video and sound quality are extraordinary, and the bonus discs have a lot of great "making of" documentaries (several hours worth, including From Star Wars to Jedi). Plus, it has some deleted scenes (ex. Biggs on Tatooine, Han with girl in the bar) and some cool extras like "Troops," casting outtakes and some other neat extras. I'm very pleased with this set, and will not be buying the official release this fall, since these bonus discs more than make up for any bonus material Lucas is going to include. Thanks to TR47 for offering such a nice alternative to the Special Editions.

Not to toot my own horn, but I am the author of the bonus discs for the deluxe TR47 package. They were made specifically to compliment the TR47 trilogy. It was my first attempt at authoring DVDs from scratch using a friend's Sony Vaio Media Edition computer and I had great fun doing it. Surprisingly, Jim Prillaman has gotten hold of the discs and has started a review shown here...

OT Bonus Discs Review

If anyone's interested in getting them, contact either me or TR47.

I'm just excited that "buzz" seems to be starting on something that I made. I hope you all enjoy them.

Hi all, just joined today after catching Star Wars bootleg fever.

I'm still researching what set I want to buy, but I have a question. Why are all the bootlegs made from the '93 definitive edition laserdiscs? Why not the '95 THX laserdiscs, which I would assume would have better picture and sound?

Thanks for looking.

Hi and Welcome Chancellor Todd.

In reply to your question I believe that they (1993 and 1995 laserdiscs) used the same transfer, thought there may be other reasons too?

Could well do with a Bootleg DVD FAQ... that 'bootleg dvd' thread in the General Stars Wars is getting far too large to search for any required info.

The '93 ones are also the THX version. The only difference I know of is packaging.

Ohhhhh. I thought for some reason the picture and sound had been brought up to THX standards for the 95 release. Is the only reason they repackaged them two years later to cash in on the "own the original trilogy one last time" craze? Were there different supplements? I seem to recall all that comparison business of "before and after the cleanup" shots going on around the 95 release, leading me to believe that something different had been done then.

Thanks much everyone!

One more detail about the '93 releases... They were produced in the CAV format which has a slight edge in picture quality over the '95's CLV format.

That "cleanup" you refer to is the 1997 SE release.

Ah yes, I just saw that now after reading the Prillaman site. It is looking like the TR47 version is the clear winner. The level of care and attention to detail sounds like the same as I would have given the effort myself.

^ do not underestimate the power of the anamorphic set

I only have a 32" widescreen tv with low-mid range dvd player - I can't really tell the difference between the sound on both versions THAT much, and the anamorphic set obviously 'sits' better on a widescreen tv...

Details in the Torrents thread in General discusion.

Looks good, if its got the leia scene and no errors it might be the best set.

The Anamorphic set has quite noticably softer picture quality.

But slightly more vibrant colors than the TR47 set... Hard to chose!

There's some "video echo" on the Anamorphic set, it seems. You'll have to watch it on a computer monitor: look for sharp straight vertical lines, you'll see them "repeated" to the right...

And for what I have seen of the new "Farsight" Anamorphic set, there is some video noise in the blacks...

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

I think there were a couple of comparison shots between the tr47 set and Farsight set - could well do with the original anamorphic (Dr Gonzo) set up too anda few a screenshots from all 3 versions for a good comparison.

Just 2.0, eh? That's a shame. Shoulda just kept the PCM track, in that case.

Yeah the audio job on Gonzo's is pretty lacking.

I was just on eBay and saw a whole bunch of DVD sets that aren't mentioned in this forum. Anyone familiar with any of these:

All but the 3rd link look like the Anamorphic version to me (they just use different DVD Cover Art...)

Also- Which set is now the Dr.Gonzo set? The Anamorphic?

Yeah, the regular anamorphic is the Dr. Gonzo set (it's also the source for the LAVC MPEG-4 encodes I did).
