What Did Vader say?

Author
Time
In Star Wars (ANH), there is the scene where Vader and Tarkin are told that there was nothing but some leftover equipment at the base on Dantooine. When the lines are read, everything matches up except (atleast in the non-SE) Vader makes an awkward hand gesture and there is a pause to show it. This is how it plays:

TARKIN: She lied! She lied to us!

VADER: I told you she would never consciously betray the Rebellion.

<Hand gesture and pause to show it>

TARKIN: Terminate her...immediately!

So, does anyone know what Prowse said here, or if he just delivered the line slower than JEJ or what? It's always bugged me.

I'll try to get a screen cap or some video later.

VADER: I told you she would never consciously betray the Rebellion. Luke is my son and Leia is my daughter.

Of course, when GL realized the mistake, he had to mute this line.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

AFAIK, Prowse didn't read his lines, as he couldn't talk out of the mask. Probably a stagehand read them. And yes, JE simply read faster than the gesture, which is why Vader continues gesturing even after he's finished his sentence.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Prowse did read some of his lines, because in the A&E special, they show the footage with Prowse's voice.

Prowse's original line was longer, but when they got James Earl Jones to do the voice for that part, they cut the line down to "I told you she would never consciously betray the Rebellion". I don't remember what the full original line was, but there was more to it than just that.

There used to be a THX laserdisc available if you bought a THX home cinema set up. It showed a longer clip of the A&E sequence (on the Tantive). I saw it at a convention about 10 years ago. I can't remember if there was anymore SW stuff on there though. Anybody know of this disc?

Prowse DID read all Vader's lines on set. In the 4th draft script of Star Wars (easily googled), Vader's line is exactly as James Earl Jones reads it. It's possible David Prowse read the same line on set but maybe paused or read it more slowly and Lucas decided JEJ should read it the way that sounded best rather than reproduce Prowse's reading. Because Tarkin is standing still in the next shot, the editor had to stay on the wide shot with Vader gesturing until Tarkin stops walking. To me it looks like the editor just didn't have enough takes to choose from.

I thought I said I had read the 4th draft script, but you are right. And I didn't say it, though I meant to.

Anyways, the editor had cut the shot right after Jones finishes his line and gone straight to Tarkin AT WORST people would have blasted continuity, of which most people wouldn't have noticed. Right now, it looks plain silly to have silence and Vader waiving his hand around in the air with nothing to say.

But I agree, it was probably just a lack of footage to work with.

If you could find this, I am sure someone would .torrent it for us. I'd love to have it. Anything with footage on it is a SW editors best friend. Plus, it's nice to have SW THX stuff. I was dissappointed that the new DVDs didn't use the SW THX opening that was on the laserdiscs. I mean, if it exists then use it.

Shhh.. shut up shut up shut up!! You're giving GL ideas! He might re-do the scene in CGI, and have Outkast playing on the soundtrack and a CGI Lou Ferrigno dressed up as a geisha in the background! Oh no too late!

This was a THX laserdisc laserdisc called, "WOW!" It included a short documentary about sound editing called, "Soundtrack." There is the scene where Vader is choking one of the rebels for information. Here's Prowse's dialog...

Vader: (lifting up rebel) This ship carries the crest of Ahdra (?)! Was any of the royal family on board? (throws rebel to floor) Start tearing this ship apart until you find those tapes! Find the passengers of this vessel. I want them alive!

So some dialog was changed after the original readings.

The doc mainly focused on demontrating sound editing techniques for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, but there is another brief Star Wars scene with the original on-set sound of the droids walking through the halls of the Tantive while it's being attacked. You can barely make out Anthony Daniels saying his lines under the costume. In this scene his dialog remained the same.

I like to think that's where vader stamped his foot and squealed in frustration.

oooooo! I'll get you rascally rebels!
If you're going to take forever, then I'm having a hotdog!
