You know, something just occured to me as I was going over this project: Why am I converting to 24fps in the first place? Isn't DVD at 30 frames per second, or am I missing something in the process?

NTSC is 29.97, PAL is 25.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

You are not understanding my question. Film runs at 24 fps. 3-2 telecine is used to convert it to NTSC 30 fps. This has nothing to do with PAL rates.

I'm just trying to figure out what the advantage to IVTC is, and also, should I render the resulting MPEG at 30 fps, or 24 fps with 3-2 pulldown?

Thanks.

However, I think it would be best simply to grab the 5.1 audio off the upcoming official DVD release and then take out any sound that was different from the original and mix it with a 5.1 track off the LD. I figure that 95% of the sound on the DVD will not be diffferent from the original release and it will sound better than the LD audio (plus the theatrical release was in surround sound I believe so it will be staying true to the original).
Bad idea. We want to use the original material. Further, Prologic-II is a standard format just like 5.1 now is, and it can be played back on anyone's surround-setup. Also, the idea that you need menus needs to be dropped. How many times do you actually use a menu to navigate to a specific scene? I usually use NEXT, PREVIOUS or GOTO on my remote. Most of the time I see a menu on a DVD I think "this is just wasting my time" and you click NEXT NEXT NEXT but half the time it does nothing. Yeah okay, so the menus on the bootlegs won't be invasive like that, but that's still the mood when seeing those menus.

Out of interest does anyone know approximately how many megabytes would be taken up by a subtitle track in each of the dvds?

Okay, I've created a 24fps segment, and here's the results...

I can see where scenes have been joined, but the playback is not nearly as smooth, and I'm concerned about the "junk" located in some of the scenes (i.e. outlines or shadows from the joined images.) Is this as good as it gets? Should I watch it on a home DVD player to see how it looks there?

That is cool. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear before. I didn't mean cut the film reels themselves. I thought that you had something like a film scanner that would capture the films to a computer or a DAT tape or something like that and then edit the captured files instead of the films. I really don't know how a film scanner works, but I've heard of them. Maybe Laserman would know more.

That is cool though that you have those films and that setup.

I've noticed (on the Anamorphic set anyway) that all the SW movies need a little color-correction, and Jedi needs it badly. Here's an example (I can't get the full-sized screen like you but here's what I have) of what I've done with one of the two shots you posted here:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v58/chainsawash/SS.jpg

Now I don't know about you, but that's a hell of a lot better and there's little to no loss of detail. If you had the time, you could color-correct every shot in the trilogy to make it look just awesome, and maybe even do some dust-removal. Personally I'd just color-correct, I don't mind the dust at all. If you'd do that, first I'd strongly suggest correcting not frame-by-frame but shot-by-shot. For example, put all the frames in one shot into the same Photoshop file and color-correct them all at the same time, basically using the worst-looking frame in the shot as your guide. Second, I could help you out if you want; you could send me some shots via e-mail and I could send the corrected ones back, etc. The biggest problem I have with ANH is sometimes faces get quite red, in ESB there are some shots that are just off, and in ROTJ there are MANY shots that are way too bright, where the black doesn't match the black of the letterbox (most notably in the Vader-Luke duel while Luke is hiding and before he gets really P.O.'d about Vader mentioning Leia, if I remember correctly) and a lot of blue haze around stars.

Like I said, I'd be more than happy to help out if you want. The capture looks to be really good, just needs a little tweaking is all.

Didn't someone mention something about a Harry and the Hendersons conversion project? Is this from laserdisc? What about Howard the Duck?

On a sidenote, do you guys know good sites with info on laserdiscs, such as sites that list movies releases on LD, or technical info or review sites, or even sites that sell LD's? All I can find is eBay.

"Now I don't know about you, but that's a hell of a lot better and there's little to no loss of detail."

All you've really done is adjust the contrast, and lost the stars in the background in the process. It's a balancing act, but I like where I've got it at this point.

"What about Howard the Duck?"

I would so do that movie. Leia Thompson is HOT!!!!

I'd also like to do THX-1138, another great film that Lucas has gone after with his digital crayons.

The stars are still there, the small preview doesn't show it. Ah, well; it's your project, do what you will. If I ever get a big enough harddrive I might start my own.

By the way, what video capture card are you using?

is there still any open torrents for the TR47 versions?? I have tried myspleen but they never seem to be up and running. If there are no torrents, is there anyone will to burn a set if i send them DVDRs and return post? I also have a set of the anamorphic version if anyone wants to trade. I'll check the board so if anyone can help just reply or email me. Thanks

Both torrents are running fine - Star Wars has 12 seeds and Empire has 21 seeds - You need to join MYSPLEEN.com in order to download the torrents

Using the upcoming DVD sound track would be a good jumping off point to where you can take out SE audio and replace it with the original where necessary. As for menus I use them all the time because they are faster than hitting skip 20 times and they are more visually pleasing. Menus that opened with "a long time ago...STAR WARS" and then transition to the menu with some of John Williams brilliant score would be worth losing 50-100 megs of space.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that, if that is a shot from your AVI, it's too dark, and most of the stars will get swallowed up in the MPEG. As I've said, I've had to balance between bright stars and a washed out Star Destroyer on the opening sequence. As we speak, I am compiling an MPEG at a bitrate of 8/6 (high/avg.), just to see what kind of file size I get.

"If I ever get a big enough harddrive I might start my own."

Fry's is selling a 250 for $119. I'm running 3 160's and a 250 (all Maxtor), and most of them are full!

"By the way, what video capture card are you using?"

I bought a WinTVGO model 190 for $40 bucks, and as you can see, it is kicking ass (with third-party software). The results are far superior to what I thought I would get using my $700 digicam with analog pass-through. Go figure.

Quick question for owners of the anamorphic version of the original trilogy. Does your ROTJ not display the THX trailer and the time/chapter info on the front of your dvd player while the movie is playing? I just got this set (thanks digitalfreaknyc) and the first two movies show this info, but ROTJ doesnt? Thanks.

EDIT: As soon as I can take this to my friends house who owns a nice widescreen TV I will post my review comparing the TR47 and Anamorphic versions.

Hey mebejedi, its looking good!
Have you done a compare of the footage through your card vs through your camcorder just out of interest?

If you like I will send you a bootleg DVD for nuffin so you can compare your results to what is already out there.

It does look a little light compared to the LD, but you should always play it back thorugh a calibrated TV monitor from DVD to see what it 'really' looks like.
It's hard to get the colour right, what software are you using to adjust it?
