PAL is better resolution, higher framerate, and, I believe, better colour depth. It's still relatively crap ass compared to what is possible, but until we get a standard for HD, it's the best common format broadcast format.

1) The resolution difference doesn't really matter unless people take advantage of it, and it rarely happens. If you've ever compared a PAL and NTSC DVD there's really no difference in detail, and if there is it is not due to the extra resolution.

2) Higher framerate? PAL is 25fps, NTSC is 30. Since people tend to just speed film up for a PAL release (as there's only 1 frame of difference) it makes PAL movies speedier then normal. NTSC looks much for natural due to 3:2 pulldown.

3) I'm not aware of better color depth, though someone correct me if there's other info.

Some of the 29473 reasons why everyone's good Pal is better than Never Twice Same Color include more scan lines, wider bandwidth of luminance signal, better saturation, stable hues and higher gamma ratio.

You do realize that if there's a good transfer of the movie it really won't matter. If you compare PAL and NTSC side by side there is more resolution in the PAL version, but it's nothing to go crazy about. As for color saturation, etc, that is dependent on the image itself.

If you can find any DVD that beats Criterion's R1 transfer of The Rock I'd like to see it.

PAL is frame for frame the same as the source material. The 4% speedup is noticed by something like less than 1% of people - and then it's only the sound. There have been advancements in technology that allow this to be less noticeable. On the other hand you have NTSC's jaggies caused by the 2-3 speedup, which is noticeable by far more of the public than the audio problem in PAL. I notice the ugliness of NTSC's system.

NTSC:
Lines/Field: 525/60
Horizontal Frequency: 15.734 kHz
Vertical Frequency: 60 Hz
Colour Subcarrier Frequency: 3.579545 MHz
Video Bandwidth: 4.2 MHz
Sound Carrier: 4.5 MHz

PAL:
Line/Field: 625/50
Horizontal Frequency: 15.625 kHz
Vertical Frequency: 50 Hz
Colour Sub Carrier: 4.433618
Video Bandwidth: 5.0 MHz
Sound Carrier: 5.5 MHz

You can't sit there and tell me that the resolution doesn't matter. If that's the case then I suppose you don't care if DVD is anamorphic or not? After all, the 16:9 screen area in Non-Anamorphic PAL has 432 lines, Anamorphic NTSC has 480 lines. Non-Anamorphic NTSC has 360 lines, Anamorphic PAL has 576 lines.

Now as far as 2.35:1 goes, it has just 272 lines or resolution in NTSC. This is what our beloved NTSC Star Wars Definitive Collection LaserDiscs are limited to. PAL would have 50 more lines. That translates to about 20% higher resolution. Pal releases are no longer NTSC-2-PAL jobs except where absolutely necessary - if the source material allows for it it is mastered directly to PAL. Therefore the September release of the Star Wars DVDs will see the PAL release have a much better presentation then the NTSC, and like I said watch it on a computer and you can de-speedup it to 24fps exactly how it was presented in Theatres.

I wouldn´t mind a decent PAL transfer of the ‘93 Definitive Edtion laserdiscs if anybody is working on it?

I really don´t want just to settle for an NTSC transfer because there´s quite a bit of difference in screen resolution between the PAL and NTSC systems - especially noticeable on a good large screen TV and computers. Also the NTSC DVD´s I own often suffer from "jagged edges" so for me it´s hands down the PAL system. I´ve already had my ‘95 THX Widescreen VHS tapes transferred to DVD but I´m not completely happy even though they turned out much better than I thought, thanks to some quality work. Although there is some picture and sound trouble there I ofcourse don´t want to see.

There is definitely a PAL Definitive Edition laserdisc available right, they weren´t just released in the NTSC format were they?

I think that about says it. You can talk about numbers all you want, but whatever looks best for you and what your standard is, that's what you should go by.

They are actually coming out with a new standard, ATSC, which might replace both.

Laserman, I never thought I'd see the day, but I now have a 200GB capture!

I got my new WinTV-Go card to capture at 640x480 RGB (it crashes on YUY2), and the picture is suh-weeeeeet!. I don't think I'll have the time to clean it up frame-by-frame like you...that is, if I want my marriage to last ...but DAMN, that sure does make a difference!

That is such a ripoff...though I am curious if the sod is using my custom covers (though I can't tell since he only has the front side in the picture). Would be funny, though...

DanB found this recently sold set on the UK ebay - £110 (around US$200?):-

Expensive OT DVD Set

I can understand people covering themselves with the cost of the discs, dvd cases costs, printing and photopaper costs, ebay costs, and postage & packing - but the above is WAY excessive!

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

^ I thought they looked somewhat familiar.

I'd like to think that the bloke selling them would give a share of the gains to Cerbero - though I may be being incredibly naive to think such a thing...

Well, I was going to send a copy to Rikter first, so he can compare it. I've personally never seen a bootleg, so I don't know how it would compare to what's out there.

Well, you would know better than anyone else I know. Right now, I'm just adjusting brightness and contrast. I can't believe I was able to get a 1.2 GB MPEG on low settings. I was close to 4 GB with my DVcam capture on the same settings. Apparently, the compression is a lot better, even with a higher-quality capture. Since I can apparently up the bit count, it's gonna look bitchin!

Good job mebejedi. Yeah my captures are about 360GB each, it makes for a lot of disc space handling when doing the menu creations etc.

You probably should have captured it at actual LD resolution though, your card should be capable of that, so I'd give it another go in you have another 30GB of disc space.

There are a number of lossless codecs on the market that will give you a lower file size with zero quality loss. You can use hufyy, but grab an older version, the latest is a crachfest, or the one frome http://www.alparysoft.com/prod/compression/index.php
They require you to register it, but it is totally free.

It will be interesting to compare your version with the current bootlegs.
What are you going to use to encode it to DVD-9?

Something else I have been toying with is doing a WMV-9 set for PC users as it is noticably better quality than DVD at the same compression levels.

Now to capture the PAN & SCAN Definitive LDs and paste their image on top of the widescreen ones, frame by frame thus increasing the resolution of at least part of the frame for the widescreen...

Mebejedi, try capturing at 720 x 480 if you want it to look correct on the final DVD.

For all of you intereseted in the PAL/NTSC thing, this is a good article for the non technical of out there
http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Articles/PALvsNTSC/PALvsNTSC.asp

On the topic of the 4% speedup, I run all my DVD's through a PC with reclock, so PAL ones run at 24fps (@ 72Hz) with the correct sound, for that pitch perfect movie watching experience.
