To those wondering about my set, it is progressing - slowly.

I have a perfect uncompressed RGB capture of ANH, and it looks better than it looks on my pioneer elite laserdisc. So far so good.
I am now going through the process of checking, colour grading and then encoding it.

The encode is tricky and I will be doing quite a bit of manual work on it, so probably another month or 2. I want it to be indistinguishable from the LD version.
Then I will move onto esb and rotj.
So it will be a little while, but I am hopeful that it will be a true archive of the films for posterity.

THANKS FOR THE UPDATE!!

Question: Will it be any quicker/easier to do TESB & ROTJ with the experience gained transferring ANH?
Author

Well capturing it to an uncompressed master will be easier, but then encoding it down to DVD-9 is a time consuming process if you want it done right. Its the scene by scene checking and tweaking that takes forever, and I am doing it between work projects (Usually during render wander) so it takes a lotta time.

Take your time, I say.

No need to rush ... to perhaps make it LESS than the quality product you want it to be

We'll wait. It's worth it.

Be sure to suply it to Rikter when finished. So I can order them

Laserman, last I remember you had been planning to work with the restored original footage which will be the official release, and edit back the altered stuff (cleaned, and balanced) from the LD set. Is that still on, or have you decided to do a straight transfer and clean up of the LD stuff?

After looking at the (lack of) quality of the exisiting DVD-5 sets I thought an archival set mastered from the LD was important. Plus it gives me something to do until the DVD release.
Depending on what the dvd release is like, and how messed up he makes it, I am still keen to do a despecialised edition
But it will be after I finish these.

(no disrespect to the exisiting bootlegs, their problems are mostly due the low bitrate ncessary to fit it all on one layer, but they aren't a patch on the laserdisc originals.)

Good stuff Laserman.

I eagerly await your work.

I'm sure you've been asked this many times before, but are you using the 1993 Definitive Collection laserdiscs, and if so will you be editing in the missing C3P0 'tractor beam' line?

I'm not sure that'll fit into your dvd player m8

There are some very similar discart in the 'DVD labels art' thread

I've never even HEARD of a DVD player sold anywhere in Europe that wouldn't play NTSC discs flawlessly, and I'll bet the situation in Australia is the same.
You are completely right, every DVD player ever sold here in Australia is NTSC compatible. Further most will even do "PAL-60". Every TV sold within the past 8 years (maybe more) should be NTSC compatible, and TV's older still - like 15 years are usually PAL-60 compatible. Every DVD player sold today in Australia is also either Region-Free or has a feature to change the region.

PAL is a better system than NTSC. However as to wether the laserdiscs are better I don't know. I would imagine that they are probably just a cheap NTSC-2-PAL job. If you were to today split the 30 NTSC frames back into their original 24 frames, and then encode them into PAL (with a 4% speedup and interpolating extra lines of resolution) you would have a better quality presentation than the original NTSC - but not by much. The interpolation would be better to cope with than the problem of the 2-3 pulldown.

But doesn't PAL speed the film up by 4%?

It's for that reason that I think NTSC is better. I bought a PAL DVD of Back to the Future just becasue I'm a big fan, and it bothered me during the movie. Especially the music seemed really sped up.

My stance on revising fan edits.

"But doesn't PAL speed the film up by 4%?"

Wouldn't that depend on the quality of the frame rate conversion? I mean, you can do 3:2 pulldown film/NTSC, surely it's possible to do a decent conversion to PAL. Besides, everything else about PAL kicks NTSCs hiney.

Why is PAL so much better than NTSC?
Granted, if the PAL conversion is pitch corrected, the speed-up wouldn't be a huge deal, but what is it that makes it such a superior system? The resolution?

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Obi_Skywalker - the cost prob depends on where you live (postage & packing etc), Rikter has a mean collection of stuff and is VERY competitive on price.

PAL is better resolution, higher framerate, and, I believe, better colour depth. It's still relatively crap ass compared to what is possible, but until we get a standard for HD, it's the best common format broadcast format.
