As I don´t have any of them at this point, I thought it would be interesting to know, which edition members think are the best version in terms of sound & picture quality.

Once I get the Anamorphic release I will vote, but as of right now TR47 would be my 1st choice.

I have the Anamorphic and TR47 edits, and have seen the 5 Star SE...

For me the Anamorphic set is the best version I've seen.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

I like the anamorphic, but that could be sentiment. Anyway, I chose to get the anamorphic set because I wanted all the extras (like menus, commentary, etc.). It gives the feeling of an older DVD release, while the TR-47 set was a little too bare-bones for my tastes (though I would like the better sound and picture quality).

I don't mind having the extra stuff on a separate disc(s) for the sake of quality. To me, the TR47 set represents the closest quality currently possible to the Definitive Collection laserdiscs on a single layer DVD. The anamorphic version is a close second, but sacrifices a lot of audio quality and a bit of video quality in order to include commentary, menus, and an easter egg on the same discs. Plus, the original laserdiscs weren't anamorphic anyway. Still, it's nice to have both.

Easter egg!? How do I find them?

BTW, I think the anamorphic version looks really good. Though I would of liked the audio in it's original form, the DD 2.0 sounds good too.

the anamorphic is excellent. I got my set from rikter with great cover art and disc art. The supplementals disc is amazing and if picture is where its at for you, there's no question. If you have a widescreen 16:9 format...this is the one to one. It is pretty much consensus that the anamorphic has more extras, better picture, but the TR47 does have stronger sound. Not to say the anamorphic is not good for sound, it is...though the tr47 does trump it. While I'd like a mix of two to exist...which a better DL dvd may make happen, I'd pick the anamorphic every time. And why spend a ton of money on a DL, when the box set is coming out and technology is improving and with a year we'll have what we all want a really, really great copy of the OT (done the right way).
16 years I wait and this is what I get???

From the menu screen of the Anamorphic versions, move the cursor to AUDIO OPTIONS (but do not press ENTER), then move one "click" RIGHT, then one "click" UP. A silhouette of Vader will appear. Press ENTER.

By the way, the Five-Star bootleg is excellent. It's dual layered and factory pressed, but is the 1997 Special Edition. The Dual-Layer Definitive Edition may be factory pressed D9 DVDs, but they in no way equal the quality of the TR47, Anamorphic, and Five-Star versions.

I have the TR47 set and for me is the best. Since I haven't seen the anamorphic set, I can't judge that one. I also have the 5 Star set and it was my first set of Star Wars DVDs. I think the 5 Star set if pretty cool if you like the 97 Special Editions. At the time that I got the 5 Star set, they were the only things that I could find. I went the sneaky rought and actually found the a web site thus bypassing the whole ebay mess.

Also, I don't have a wide screen TV or surround sound at home. I do have a stereo TV that is 36" I'm probably not the right person to even answer this.

The TR47 set has SWEEEEEET Audio and a great picture!!!

BUT I LOVE the Anamorphic set as it looks better on my projecter BUT on my 27' - The TR47 and the Anamorphic set are ALMOST the very same as far as picture goes.

i have compared the 2 and I would have to say that the tr47 set has the better picture, but only slightly

I know the TR47 set was nuked due to errors in ESB and RotJ (chapter switch at Leia welding, repeat on crashed speeder bike), but is there anything wrong with the ANH disc? I'm having a quick scan through it now, and while there seems to be totally blown out whites aboard the T4 (possibly due to playing on my PC), everyone seems to agree the video is better than the anamorphic set.



(Edit the edit)Never mind, the jump I was talking about is also on the Ananmorphic...must be where ILM made the switch to the large scale trench model...The audio on the TR47 version is, however, astonishing! The bass is very deep, and even on my crappy little PC speaker drivers, the difference is noticeable.

I have to go with the TR47 set. The sounds is just so awsome. After all sound is 90% of any movie.

Ok guys, sorry if this sounds stupid, I have a set of 4 discs I got off eBay, and how do I know if they are the TR47 set? These are pretty good quality, but if there are better ones out there, I'd like to know where I can get them. I swear I'm not an agent of the darkside (lucasfilm)!

1. Are they DVD-R (if you don't know, what colour is the bottom of the disc)?
2. Do they have menus or are they move-only?
3. Do you have only 1 soundtrack on the movie, or do you also have the commentary?

Can anyone spell out what the errors are on the TR47 set? I'm contemplating torrenting the things, ripping it all apart, editing the problems, and putting it all back together again. I know there's the 3 second blank in front of Leia welding in ESB, and aparently a repeat of a scene in RotJ?

There's no repeated scene anymore. The 2 errors are the 3 second blackness between the laserdiscs in ESB and the bitrate jumping to 10Mbps in Jedi when a speeder explodes (which is legal but can cause pixelation on some players).

This was a BURN error, not a mastering flaw. Please STOP posting about it, it's been corrected.

Yes, the repeated scene was a burn error, but the pixelation is due to the bitrate not a burn error.

That error does not exist on the master discs-the only 2 flaws are the black 4 second pause and the bitrate jump in the speederbike scene.

2. Movies only, no menus, except on the supplemental materials disc.
3. No commentary.
