I know the very basis of the board means most are against changes to the original trilogy, but this is one taking place in the new Empire Strikes Back 2004 DVD. Is this one you can live with? It adds consistency, which I guess is fine (although if were playing the all or nothing game for changes - it'd be none for me). My biggest complaint with this is he does not look ominous...Clive Revell looks cooler.

Comparison shot:

You know if someone could simply shadow around the eyes more and give it a bit more glow, I'd take the new one, but then thats kind of a cleaned up version of the old one, oh well. Why is it Luca$ has to spell everything, I mean everything out now in I-III, whatever mystery that was there in IV or V is now ruined.

hehe HotRod I know what you mean man, but atleast we'll still have ALL those original versions on VHS to watch & knowing the British public once them DVD sets hit the High Streets you'll be able to pick up more copies of the VHS editions in second hand shops & on ebay than we will EVER be able to watch in our life times for little to nothing.......

It's not really the new emperor hologram that bothers me, although it does look like absolute ass, it's the new dialogue. Why did they changes the dialogue? The new dialogue blows. Dammit Lucas, stop before it's too late!

So you know, I'm already taking care of it.

2004:
We have a new enemy... The young rebel who destroyed the Death Star. I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker.
How is that possible?
Search your feelings, Lord Vader. You will know it to be true. He could destroy us.
He's just a boy...

MagnoliaFan version:
(darkened the emperor's hologram, underneath the hood and in the neck area especially)

He's just a boy...

Exactly...I mean, in Jedi, we really didn't get to see his face untill he was in the Throne room. When he came off the shuttle, he was still masked by his hood!!

Might aswell have big neon lights telling everybody whos who now. We're not stupid Lucas, stop spelling everything out for us!!!

now that i've read this over a couple times.... he must really think we're stupid.. not only does he not think we dont know who the new enemy is... but then he uses " The young rebel who destroyed the Death Star" AND "I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker"

and then Vader says "How is that possible?"

im sry but that doesnt sound like something Vader would question... especially since he has the ability to use the force...

and then they re use the line "Search your feelings, Lord Vader. You will know it to be true."
ahem... uhm... don't you guys use that same line in the movie when Vader tells Luke he's his father...

"i am your father"
"no that's not true. that's impossible"
"search your feelings, you know it be true"
"NO!!"

i hate recycled dialogue!!

That's a 16:9 anamorphic stretch that was taken care of in the first pic, but not the second. This is one of the few changes I quite like from the new DVDs.

While this change doesn't bother me as much as many others, it does look like ass. He just looks like a sad old man. Not some ultimate evil. Man, if he walked up to me and threatened me, I'd laugh, knock him over, and walk away. No, I'd just laugh and walk away, that's how unthreatened I would feel.

Even though this one adds consistency between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi because the Emperor now looks (mostly) the same, I still prefer the old version with the woman-with-chimpanzee-eyes.

Magnolia your version is much better. I like it. You make them concise and deliberate as we want our menacing evil and prevailing good characters to be. Strong, knowledgable and assertive. All these lines Lucas is doing with "umm" "I think" "uhhh" "huh" "how is that" etc...irritating! And why doesn't he just have the commentary by him be the audio of the film. "OK this is the emperor you're seeing now as the senator, ok this is anakin liking the senator now and being pissy...you can see where this is going, but I am going to beat it into you 10 more times assuming you are retarded." Dubbing over all lines, spelling everything out for us and explaining how this crap was his vision all along, why he hates the fans that made it what it is so he could tinker with it in the first place, and really say why its all so much better NOW. Damn.

i think people are just saying they don't like the change...
its really kinda pointless to change the dialogue...
there was no reason to....

as for the face... fine theres a reason to but it looks bad the way they did it...
thats all

Excatly, Luke. And the cumulative effect of changes can go from one minor annoyance to overwhelmingly frustrating.

Chaltab, it's really all about the fact that the scene did not need changing. Yes, he looks a little different from how he appears in ROTJ. Whoopy-dee-doo. You knew he was the same person, didn't you? Hell, I knew it was the same person and I was 8 years old. So, why change it? The hood over the head added this great air of mystique to his persona. Now you see his whole face and, like I said earlier, it makes him look like a sad, pathetic old man, nothing more, nothing less. How is that scary? It's not. And the dialogue change? Why bother? I know it "ties up ends" to a degree, but it is insulting to think that George doesn't believe that people can make that connection on their own. He's turned a masterful watercolor painting into a paint-by-number schlock job.
