I have to agree with Luke and Obi-wonton on this. While Watto didn't bother me all that much, Jar Jar did. Using CG to 'supplement' scenery or armies is fine. LOTR did an excellent job of combining the old technology (modles and costumes) with the new (CGI). Using CG for backgrounds or space battles is one thing, but like Obi said, cartoon like CGI characters are rather distracting.

The main problem with both of the PT films is simply there is too much use of CG. Instead of Lucas constructing real sets and props, he's taken the easier road (some would say lazy) and just left it up to computer animators. True certain puppets like Sy Snootles didn't exactly give us that 'life like' quality but that CGI Sy Snootles looked even more fake than the puppet. Dex, just didn't seem to look as real to me as he could have. The character didn't bother me, except for the crack shot. Stupid stuff like that is just unneeded. Also the creature that farted in TPM. Aren't there better ways to get the kids to laugh than fart jokes? Anyway, I digress. LOTR has pushed the envelope for CGI more than the PT has. LOTR has shown that the proper use of CG can enhance the film instead of taking it over. Lucas has let his fascination with CGI smother his story, and his characters. He's sacrifised great story telling for mere eye candy.

While I support the use of CGI when appropriate, I dislike CGI just for the sake of CGI.

Thanks for getting my back R2, I totally agree...btw I thought the only really well done CG character in Ep. I or II was the Kaminoans from ATOC...Lama Su that speaks to Obi-Wan about the clone army that they have replicated.
16 years I wait and this is what I get???

The Kaminoans are the only things I like about AOTC.

You're welcome Obi-wonton. Lama Su and the Kaminoans were pretty cool. I liked them as well. At least they got the flowing fabric to look right. Not one time in TPM did Boss Nass' robe move or look like it should.

Dude, she just a girl, and I mean girl, not woman. Story? Bah. If folk who haven't been writing as long as this old hack can come up with better, more cohesive, more logical storylines on any old SW message board, then something is wrong. ILM can run rings around other outfits when they want to, but AOTC's effects feel empty, devoid of meaning, resonance, and life.

EDIT: the floor in the Jedi Temple is CGI?!

the floor in the Jedi Temple is CGI?!

I know! I find that to be the epitome of lazy. What?! The guy can't be bothered to construct a floor? A floor?!! It's just trully sad when you think about it.

Natalie Portman is all women. All gorgous women. Attack of the Clones has a beautiful story. Taking the best parts of Shackspeire, Fall of Rome, and a little Tolkien. Did I mention that Natalie Portman is gorgous?

Is the wookie gonna have to deal out some punishments? Remember what Han said "It's not wise to upset a wookie"

An aside, Kahn is such a dangerous and fear inducing kind of name: Ghengis Khan, Wrath of Khan... Chaka Khan... Yeah, okay, I guess it's not too bad.

Luke, I've notice in the short time that I've been here, Jimbo's needle is stuck.

I know what you mean about the floor. Trully, trully sad.

could the man just hire someone to make it... or if that was too hard... couldn't he just shoot somewhere where they already had a nice floor...
i mean it doesnt matter what is around them... its all covered by bluescreen anyway...

Somewhere I've got an old VHS of "From Star Wars to Jedi", that old making-of video that came out a while back. I remember a section where they talk about how in Jedi, they constructed a whole set for Jabba's barge, yet we hardly saw it at all. I seem to recall George saying that he wanted it to look as real as possible, but focus on the story instead of panning around the set showing it off.

When I look at the PTs, it seems like most of it is just a showcase for visual effects. I think this is what got lost between the OT and the PT, the focus on storytelling.

Oh, and hi... I've been lurking for a while and finally joined. How's it going?

Lads - you've obviously forgotten that the floors of 1977 are vastly inferior to the floors of 2004 - technology has caught up, moved on - so to speak.

Even flooring filmed at the time of shooting AOTC was inadequte - so only CGI flooring aka 'flooring of the future' would suffice...
