The 1st gunfight in the detention centre seemed more intense with the 'raw' sound effects too.

It was refreshing to hear the end credit music in it's original form too - more of a 'crunchier' (my vast descriptive musical wordedge to the fore there ) score / sound - in fact I enjoyed it so much so that I went back and listened to it again!

never noticed that before - prob too caught up in it. lol

I look forward to when you'll post all of the non-minor (trimmed cuts for time etc) changes you made and see just how many most of us (prob just me) never even noticed. Even reading your list in the post above there is just so much that changed - though through the fluid editing and now more intiguing story it is hard to remember the annoyances of GL's version anymore... nearly.

It does make me wonder just how much GL has changed the OT already - and how much he may change the OT in the future... even such a 'simple' sound effect can change the feeling or the intensity of a scene...

Well, Rikter was good enough to send me the MagnoliaFan edits, so many thanks to him.

They're interesting certainly, and some of the changes I very much agree with - some trims I didn't notice or miss at all which I think says volumes for their worth - but at times I felt maybe the edits went a little far at times, some cuts at the ends of scenes (especially in AOTC), for time reasons I suppose, were a bit sudden for me, though perhaps that was just familiarity with the originals getting the better of me, the cuts being a bit unexpected at times.
Regarding the Pod Race, while I agree it was bloated in the original and DVD release, I felt that in the edit it was a little too cut up, and the music changes didn't work for me. It became hard to keep track of where he was in the race.
I liked Jar Jar a lot more, but felt he was pushed a little too far in calling Anakin a 'little bastard' - perhaps this was the result of an (understandble! lol) temptation to get as far away from GL's Jar Jar as possible! Thought Sebulba was much meaner too. Woo-and-Yay for that certainly.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved a lot of it - Watto was much cooler (cantina song - genius!) and getting rid of half Anakin's lines seems to have improved Jake Lloyd's performance no end. The subtitles were clever too - Trade Federation were mean bastard...even if perhaps Gunray's lines were a little clumsy at times - the 'Shoot his companions' lines jarred for me.

What certainly isn't in doubt is MagnoliaFan's skill - this is a damned nifty piece of work and you are to be congratulated sir.

I am hoping to receive my MagnoliaFan edits this week (RiK posted em at the weekend I think) so I am pleased to see another 'review' before I get to watch them. I am particularly looking forward to 'Balance'. It will be great to watch it again without having to endure some of the crap Lucas insisted on putting in there. Being an editor and a lover of Star Wars myself I hope to give you my opinions from a technical and fan point of view in a review next week.

My 1st viewing I was looking for changes - with the uncertainty of what had been edited or not - and how well or bad the changes had been executed.

I suppose the excitement and expectancy of hope of sitting down to something which resembled a story fitting of the OT universe had clouded (or rather shrouded ) my thoughts.

It wasn't until the 2nd or 3rd time of viewing for me that the fluidity in the story of the MFE's had me immersed in watching the film itself - as I would site down and watch a 'normal' film.

It would be interesting to find a fan of the OT Star Wars - who had NOT seen GL's Ep1 & 2 films, and show them the MFE first, and then GL's version - to gauge their perspective...

Well I am an OT fan from way back and with the exception of the DeathStar blastwaves and the new celebration song in place of the YubNub song I really disliked the 1997SE versions. I was given the SE videos but because of things like the Luke girl-scream and the Greedo fiasco, plus the CGI Jabba that just looked arse I could only bring myself to watch them twice.

I only saw TPM once, in the cinema and that was enough for me. I did get to see the Phantom Edit (West Coast) a while ago and much preferred that version to what I had first seen. So burned was I that I did not go to see AOTC in the cinema at all and have not seen it on DVD, I caught most of it on a VCD and was fairly disgusted with what I saw in terms of the editing as it looked like it had been slapped together the night before.

I would be interested in seeing the MagnoliaFan edits, I have made my selections with Rikter, and then maybe renting the official PT DVDs and giving them a fresh look.

I'll let you know when I do.

Question for MagnoliaFan. What did you use to edit 'Balance' etc? And did you rip the original DVD or did you play it into your computer via firewire?

Thanks

Prillaman has received an anamorphic dvdr set of the Original Trilogy, and will be doing a review on it in the next week. If anyone is interested:-

Unfortunately as alluded to at that link its a choice between the sound of the TR47 and the anamorphic's picture that is until Magnolia fixes are woes.

Why doesn't someone just rip the sound file off of the TR47 set and attach it to the video file for the animorphic set? Then take the commentary track from the animorohic set and make it audio track 2...
Or did I just inadvertantly volunteer myself to do it?

btw, I don't have the TR47 set, but if someone passed it my way, I'll look into that for you.

^ I'm not sure there is enough room (megabytes) on a dvdr for the PCM soundtrack from the TR47 set to be physically placed onto the anamorphic set?

IIRC the reason why the guy who did the anamorphic version said that using the 2.0 option was a lot smaller than the PCM, and that with the chapter stops & commentaries he didn't want to lose too much of the video qualtiy?

I suppose everyone is waiting for a good dual-layered dvd set - I know there's been a couple of dual-layered sets - but they havn't gone down to well in comparison to the single layered versions - one of the d-l sets apparently only used half the 2nd side and some mentioned the pic quality was WORSE!

Hopefully when the combatibilty issues of dual-layered dvd are more known (and the d-l dvds themselves become cheaper) then someone will do a fully utilised dual-layered anamorphic 4 disc set with PCM sound - in the style of the Deinitve Collection laserdiscs (now that's a mouthful )

Well I kind of had you in the back of my mind magnolia, when I made that post. You are bringing us the promise of so many good things. Hope expectations are not becoming to burdensome.

Had a weird conversation with a fellow SW fan last night - compared MagnoliaFan to Apple and GL to Microsoft. I think I know what he was getting at...

Steve Jobs vs. Bill Gates That's a good argument. The creative people's man vs. the evil man that wants to own the world. Sounds about right.

Hey Rikter, Thanks a bunch for my TR47 and magnolia edits dvds they look great!!!
I discovered a funny thing, maybe many of you know already but:
the dubbed voice of JarJar in "Balance of the Force" is a mix of Spanish, English and something else "Spanglish" . I'm Mexican so it was a quite funny experience to read the subbs and actually understand some of the things the dude is saying.

Again Thans very much RiK.

Does anyone here plan to make availble the Balance of the Force an dClone War DVD's, possibly via bittorrent? After reading the review, I must say that I am desperate to see them.
