2004 box set changes — Page 2

Damn, that'll be huge Luke...let me guess...

"Farenheit 9/21" by GQ magazine.

Michael Moore's controversial documentary has set hollywood ablaze with controversial pointedness at president Bush. There is another controversy raging concerning the greatest selling movie franchise of all time coming to DVD. The conflagration begins at Skywalker Ranch and ends in the home of John Q. Public. 9/21, The Original Trilogy Box set of Star Wars is slated for release. 27 years after Star Wars was released in theatres it will now be on DVD. Long awaited is a gross understatement. The OT box has set record for DVD sales with pre-orders and has not even hit the shelves yet. Controversy sells. And George Lucas is at the center of it. Devoted fans seem to be split over his continual changes to his classic trilogy. "Fanboys", as they are called at theforce.net website, tout his every move calling it sheer genius. But, there are others that do not see it that way. Fans of the most ardent nature have found a home at OriginalTrilogy.com where they have started a online petition to get their beloved Trilogy back in its theatrical form. Their forum's hottest topics is re-edits of Lucas' releases and ripping the Laserdisc release of 1995 to DVD-R.

Many changes have fueled the incindiary debate. For those that were disgusted by the1997 Special Edition, more changes seem to be in store for the new boxset release. One fan was quoted saying, "Greedo shoots first, not in my DVD player!" Greedo shooting first, a change that seemed to anger many fans softened the movie with overt political correctness in Lucas' Lunchbox Empire. A recent poll of over 40,000 people on the Game FAQs website had 57%, saying they will not purchase the set with nearly half of those, simply for all of the changes Lucas has committed to (along with the fact that there is no release of the originals).

Many fans have vowed to not buy this boxset, knowing of the changes. Some welcome them. But, many are still unaware. "What do you mean changes, the box set is labeled Star Wars Trilogy! It doesn't say Special Edition or Director's Cut...it is the same movies, right? I am buying the ones I saw as a kid, right?" The number of sales and the preception of deceipt has propelled more furvent debate over Lucas' changes. Lucas has vowed to never release his theatrical movie as they now have evolved into his "true vision". Ostracizing the fans that helped him build his "Empire" does not seem the wisest course, but this is a man that released the Phantom Menace after a 16 years hiatus. The fans, critics and the general public called it a failure and Jar-Jar Binks was their scapegoat.

Lucas may never fully grasp that his new trilogy while doing well at the box office is not as relevant as his originals. Some say he himself has succumb to the "dark side" of capitalism and banished what once seemed pure forever. The late 70's and early 80's seem forever intertwined with the Science Fiction Trilogy classic of Good vs. Evil. It defined a generation, became essential pop culture and spawned a billion dollar enterprise. "To have the original movies is to have a piece of my childhood back, like meeting an old friend or reading an old letter. Does he not understand what it means to us" A simple fan pleas.

Something like that maybe...just as a quick ramble of thoughts, a stream of conciousness if you will.

The box set is not labled original trilogy. It is labled Star Wars trilogy.

Nicely written piece - views of both sides are there and yet puts out the message that the coming dvds will not the version we saw in the cinemas upon their initial release...

Jimbo, thanks for the in depth assessment of my piece (really off the cuff ramblings, but emotional nonetheless). Thanks (for real) Jason, I appreciate it. I was thinking in a more "GQ" sense trying to present both sides, though clearly it is controversial b/c of how he has wreaked havoc on his fan base.

Now you got me thinking I should rework it and put some time into it. Maybe splicing in my That Feeling essay on the other Forum. Thanks Luke.

Great piece Obi-wonton. It doesn't sound like ramblings to me. Well thought out. Contains both sides of the argument. Who could ask for more?

Jeez, you'd have to be crazy to think the ESB lightsabers needed messing with.

Oh, wait...

In my opinion the only lightsabers that really neaded fixing was the lightsabers of the Obi-Wan vs. Vader fight. While the lightsaber effects of the other movies weren't bad I do believe the 2004 edition lightsabers are an improvement. By fixing the lightsabers, deleting racor matte lines, fixing Han and Greedo, deleting Lukes scream, and fixing that old Jabba animation the 2004 edition essentially got rid of all the Special Editions problems. Yet by changing Bobas voice and putting Hayden in Return of the Jedi it creates two more problems. I understand the motivation behind each change. Bobas a clone so has to sound alike and Haydens head is meant to show that Anakin Skywalker died when he changed to Vader. The flaw is a clones voice can be different if the factors are different. Also saying he died when he turned to Vader kind of undermines Anakins sacrafice.

If it ain't broke fix it anyway...hmmm...maybe if it broke, f**K up the whole thing beyond any recognition but promise brighter colors and lounder, clearer sounds and most will love it. Oh I am bitter and growing more so as 9/21 gets closer. Though I tried to be unbiased in my "GQ" article above.

Hello. First time poster, long time lurker.

I'm a regular at TF.N, and, believe me, not everybody there is enamoured with these changes. The pro-changes people are just the loudest, and getting more outrageous the closer we get to 9/21. List me among the Embittered. I haven't seen any of the leaked stuff, and I never will. I already know too much about it.

I know what you mean everyone. It's getting harder for me not to get bitter about this set. I'm grateful that I have the OT on DVD. This set looks like it's going to be worse than I first thought.

I will rent it and that's about it. Already in my Netflix queue. I own a copy of the OT DVD's remastered from the laser discs and I love 'em. The guy who made them for me did a great job. What I really love is that my primary DVD player is not DVD-R compatible, but it plays these DVD-Rs without a problem. Go fig. And I was gonna play them through my PS2. No need anymore.

Yes, Darth Sheba, it is good to hear from you and after I saw your website

Emperor's Throne Room Blog Spot

Well, despite me being engaged, I now want to marry you. Your talk of yoda with the lightsaber being wrong, why LOTR is better than the PT, 78 reasons to hate Ep. I, 64 to hate Ep. II links and lastly "the part of me died last night" piece...regarding the new of so many alterations to our beloved Trilogy. Wonderful stuff. If we could coax you from thefroce.net , well we'd love for you to be a regular poster her and build this board up. Great stuff. Really. Welcome.

Thanks for the welcome! I'll try to post more often.

As far as leaving TF.N, I got three years of sweat equity over there, helping make sure the basher voices won't be silenced. And you can thank Chefelf for those reasons to hate TPM and AOTC, and he's going to do a hate list for the DVDs, too.

As for the marriage proposal...I'm flattered, but it's probably safe to say I'm much too old for you.

Oh man, I've just been reading your reasons why Episode 2 suck during my lunch, and I nearly chocked on this...

Reason #25
Bustin' on Artoo
There's this one scene where Padme and Anakin are walking on Naboo and she says she's a little nervous and he confesses to also being nervous since this is his first assignment by himself. "Don't worry," Padme says. "We have Artoo with us." Then they both laugh about how ridiculous a concept it is that Artoo could be at all useful. Artoo beeps and if Threepio were there to translate it would probably be something along the lines of "Fuck you both."

Thats funny shit man!

Sheba, loved the "Part of Me Died Last Night" entry on your blog. Nope, not too dramatic at all. Part of me dies every time I hear a new change being announced for the DVD release of the OT in September. So I know the feeling. I've been a fan since the toys first hit pegs back in '77 and have seen them all in theaters (God only knows how many times).

A woman who truly appreciates Star Wars... I won't ask you to marry me, but can I, at the very least, get you to hang out with my wife and school her on the finer points of SW fandom?

Please?
