ESB

-flyover shot of luke riding the tauntaun

-han saving luke.  han may rub people the wrong way with his ego. but if you got a friend in han, you got a friend for life

-the ATAT tripping over its feet and falling

-the asteroid chase.  just think - this was made in 19-frickin-80 !!

-yoda going through lukes stuff looking for something to play with.  tossing things out.

-"this one, a long time i have watched.  all his life as he looked away.  never his mind on where he was..what he was doing!"

-yoda knwoing luke f-ed up in the cave..and not being surprised at all by it.

- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rH2PkjBFaU&feature=related perfectly written, acted, framed, staged, decorated, lighted, and scored.  this scene is anti-pt.

-vader blocking laser shots with the palm of his hand

-no....there is another.

-we all know about -'i love you' 'i know' - but i also like when chewie howls in protest and gets violent. han tries to calm him down telling him it'll be alright and talking sense into him.

-seeing han frozen in carbonite for the first time.  cinema buffs talk about what an unorthodox and controversial storytelling device it was for hitchcock to kill off janet leigh not even half way through pyscho.  In 1980, being a 5 year old little kid and not knowing what was going to happen to han for at least 3 more years (when your less than 10, each year is a huge percentage of your life) was every bit as shocking.  still the greatest cliffhanger.

-vader slowly ignites his lightsaber to duel with luke.

-the end-fight on the platform from beginning to end.  i love that high overhead shot of vader and luke.  the lightsabers just glow beautifully against the dark blue background.  Vader telling luke the truth about hwat really happened.  Luke refusing to join him (love the triumphant music).

ROTJ (this is probably gonna get nasty cuz so many cool scenes are ruined)

-first seeing jabba after 6 years of hearing about him

-when the rancor dies, the pet-owner cries!!  a big scary monster was someones pet!! bwaaaahaahahahahahahaaa.

-after they blowup jabbas sail barge - starting with luke saying 'lets go..and dont forget the droids' to the shot of the x wing and the falcon going in different directions.  love the music.  nowadays, the jabba storyline is kinda long and come off as filler.  but the idea of a group of people doing what they can to help a friend thats in trouble is just something that sticks with me.

-yoda telling luke not to underestimate the emperor.

-the music when yoda dies and luke realizes what needs to be done.  combine that with the thunder in the background.  just beautiful and somber.

-why dont you use your divine influence...and get us out of this!!  fords expression is just priceless.

-"i wonder if your feelings on this matter are clear, lord vader?"  if ROTJ had a voiceover like goodfellas, we would have heard vaders narration say "when the emperor asked me that, I knew I was never gonna be alive after the battle of endor"

-3P0 telling the story of star wars to the ewoks.  this was a great scene and im glad the droids were able to stay relevant even though ROTJ was mostly the luke and vader show.

-kinda torn about including this one --> Luke asking leia if she remembered her real mother.  it was this scene that really made me curious of the PT and what happened to anakin skywalker, especially after we hear Bens story.  it was a great way to start off the scene too.

[rant] I cant tell you how disgusted I was at how it got ruined cuz of lucas' completely uncaring attitude towards competant (if not decent) storytelling.

in 2004, we were all really concerned about this for ROTS because you couldn't realistically have padme die and leia remember her at birth.  but you couldn't leave it open-ended either because it would have been bad storytelling - and given how non-dimensional padme was in the PT, none of us were convinced lucas could pull it off anyways.  Carl Cunningham said that the resolution of padme was shot both ways and either padme survives but its contrived and ham-fisted.  or one of the most pathetic plotholes in cinema history is created.  and please spare me any apologist crap of leia using the force to remember her (the way it was written in the ROTS novel is absolutely ridiculous).  It was scenes like this that made us all anticipate the PT and lucas knew that fucking well and thumbed his nose and laughed all the way back to skywalker ranch.

[/rant over] doesnt bother me as much anymore since I regard PT as EU and pretend ROTS and ROTJ are not same universe.  I guess I'll leave it for old times sake.

-luke meeting the emperor for first time - gotta love that music

-Its a trap!! alright, alright- it was never really one of my "favorites", but with the internet meme and this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRvQKnsjYzM , I gotta add this in now!!  bwaaaahaahhaahahahaahaahaahahahahahahahahahahaaaa!!!!!

-i love it when han taps the stormtroopers shoulder and ambushes him.

-when the 2 logs swing together and crush the AT-ST

-when the ewoks rope the trooper on the speeder - that was awesome.

-vader crossing the rubicon by threatening to go after leia.  gotta love the music.

-luke NOT crossing the rubicon, refuses to let his emotions get the better of him and telling the emperor that he will never join the dark side.

-Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker - after throwing it all away and spending most of his life ruining himself as much as his friends and loved ones, makes the ultimate sacrifice.  perfectly staged, scored and shot.  THANKS HARMY!!

-vaders funeral - early example of 'closure'

-the celebration - i like yub nub.  i like seeing the rebels celebrate.  i like the idea of seeing a group of characters we all came to know and love - those in the flesh and in spirit.  Thanks harmy!!

Nearly any moment in SW could be considered one, primarily due to the way the film was cut. There's an undeniable energy to even the slightest of gestures that makes the thing feel so incredibly alive. This is what really makes ESB and ROTJ seem different.

No kidding.  This is why I love watching the Puggo Grande so much - it really allows one to focus on the energy of the editing.  This is such a kinetic movie from start to finish - and the death star finale is a virtuoso piece of work.  Sometimes I wonder if it's notable that this was edited by a woman...as rousing as this whole ending is, it's also very elegant, and I think that energy really puts the sequence over the top.  Every single time Han shows up, I'm floored.  And the old FX is so perfect - yeah, it's a big battle, but the ships always have a bit of that 2001-style "drifting" quality to them.  The SE dogfight work is so...not elegant.

This energy is also why I think Star Wars works best when it's removed from any notion of a saga.  I love the PG so much because it takes me to a place where Star Wars was just another movie, the new one from that American Graffiti guy.  And the great leap from his previous work was largely in the editing.

That’s impossible, even for a computer.

Thanks for the kind words about PG.  Indeed, I have always maintained that the editing is what made the movie - even possibly saved it from being a disaster. And, that's why the SE is not only bad for movie history, it also made the movie tangibly worse.

one cool editing scene is where all the rebel pilots get ready and take off in their x-wings.

its the sequence that shows on x-wing closing its canopy - you guys know it.  its cut from all different angles and for a while I thought it was one of many x-wings getting ready.  but its just one.

pretty cool.

also like the editing in ESB where vader causes lukes lightsaber to slip out of his hands and he charges after him. luke falls to the lower level and vader jumps down towards him.  The editing of luke scaling the ATAT and blowing it up with grenade and then detaching is pretty cool.

someone already mentioned ROTJ where luke jumps off the speeder and cuts down the trooper with his lighsbaber.

wish there were animated gifs of all these.

It is really difficult to point out any specific scene, the trilogy as a whole is so impressive.  I particularly love most of the scenes with Yoda and Darth Vader. Luke's training period with Yoda is also amazing, especially the scene where Yoda demonstrates the power of the Force to doubtful Luke... :) And of course the epic scene where Vader says the F word after cutting off Luke's hand ;)

I agree- this is a great scene.  As a kid, when Han says, "Chewie!  Chewie, this won't help me... Save your strength.  There'll be another time," I remember thinking 'Hey, they're not getting out of this one this time.'  It's a powerful moment that, as a kid, really drove home the concepts of sacrifice, acceptance, and resilience in the face of defeat.

I love all four of these scenes, when Luke tells the Emperor that he has lost because he won't turn to the dark side, even after years of watching the films. It still suprises me when the Emperor uses Sith Lightning to attack Luke, as the look on his face is that he is not phased by Luke's decision not to turn to the dark side and you know something is going to happen but not that.

I like yub nub too, why they felt it necessary to replace it with that awful piece of music when they "remastered" the trilogy is beyond me. That is why I bought the trilogy box set that included the Original Theatrical releases on the bonus disc, although the films are in 4:3 A little adjustment of my televisions settings and I am able to watch them at a reasonable size with reasonable quality sound.

Which is how I remember them as a child, yeah the film is a little grainy but that doesn't bother me it just adds to the overall effect to me, also you don't get all those CGI scenes and adjustments they insisted on adding in all the films in particular ANH which to me is a real Kick in teeth to the Special effects and puppet guys works. Also what is the deal with the whole Jabba at the falcon scene not necessary anyway, let alone the whole walking over the tail bit so stupid.

Han already knows the deal with Jabba and expresses that quite well, he needs to pay him off end of.

And Han definitely shot first!

In the OT - when we first see Vader as he boards the Tantive IV. I was five when I first saw that & it blew me away.

Prequels - when the mask is first put on Anakin and we hear the iconic breathing begin. This scene made me feel five again.

I have many more but these are my two favorite.

Too bad it's ruined two minutes later when he speaks.

I grant you it wasn't his best moment, but I don't think it ruined the scene.

I was looking through The Worst Scene/Sequence in Any Star Wars Film thread earlier, and thought it’s been a while since I’ve thought about some of the great / favourite scenes from the films.

This one sums up mine from Empire…

ADigitalMan said:

I think I may be most partial to the Carbon Freezing scene … and Chewie’s performance stands out the most. Watch that scene again from Chewie’s perspective and it’ll hit an entirely new emotional level.

Also a scene from Rogue One, it’s the Cassian scene at the Rebel Base hangar, where he and a small group of Rebels decide to join Jynn and take on the fight themselves (after the Rebel Alliance leaders have decided not to)…

Some of us - well, most of us - we’ve all done terrible things on behalf of the Rebellion. Spies, saboteurs, assassins. Everything I did, I did for the Rebellion. And every time I walked away from something I wanted to forget, I told myself it was for a cause that I believed in. A cause that was worth it. Without that, we’re lost. Everything we’ve done would have been for nothing. I couldn’t face myself if I gave up now. None of us could.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

You are right- we do seem to focus on our negatives rather than postives!

My favorite scene in all of SW has to be when Luke temporarily turns to the dark side and starts lashing out on Vader. I never really understood its significance until later. The music sets it up as a supreme tragedy which the last six movies were all building up to. There’s this great sweeping shot through the room with the silhouettes of Luke and Vader. Everything about it is perfect!

Not surprisingly, most of my favorite scenes are either From Star Wars or Rogue One, and one from The Force Awakens. To pick just a few;

Star Wars
The opening scene where we first see the Tantive being chased by the Star Destroyer is as moving to me now as it was in 1977.

The closeup of Luke deciding to follow Ben just after he sees his family burned. To me, Hamill’s finest moment.

The Force Awakens
The opening where we see Rey scavenging, before we know anything at all about her, is my favorite part of the ST.

Rogue One
Since this film is a much more serious take on the GFFA, it has many moments that stand out as moving or emotional. Particularly considering how fantastically it’s written, acted, and directed. Jason points out a fantastic one above.

My personal favorite is the scene on the ship just after they escape Eadu. Jyn confronting Cassian is a level of seriousness and emotion that, to me, just hasnt been done in the 40+ years of the franchise. Felicity is expert in her handling of conveying the emotional wreck Jyn is becoming. She has these amazing moments of sort of micro-shifts between breakdown and anger when she’s confronting him.

“CASSIAN ANDOR: Ion thrusters low until we cleared the storm.
K-2SO: Understood.
JYN ERSO: You lied to me.
CASSIAN ANDOR: You’re in shock.
JYN ERSO: You went up there to kill my father.
CASSIAN ANDOR: You don’t know what you’re talking about.
JYN ERSO: Deny it.
CASSIAN ANDOR: You’re in shock, and looking for someplace to put it.
JYN ERSO: I’ve seen it before.
CASSIAN ANDOR: I bet you have.
JYN ERSO: They know. You lied about why we came here and you lied about why you went up alone.
CASSIAN ANDOR: I had every chance to pull the trigger. But did I? Did I?
JYN ERSO: You might as well have. My father was living proof and you put him at risk. Those were Alliance bombs that killed him!

CASSIAN ANDOR: I had orders! Orders that I disobeyed! But you wouldn’t understand that.
JYN ERSO: Orders? When you know they’re wrong? You might as well be a stormtrooper.
CASSIAN ANDOR: What do you know? We don’t all have the luxury of deciding when and where we want to care about something. Suddenly the Rebellion is real for you? Some of us live it. I’ve been in this fight since I was 6 years old. You’re not the only one who lost everything. Some of us just decided to do something about it.”

My favorite moment from each movie.

Phantom Menace: Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul. Specifically the part where they’re all divided by the shields and have to stare at each-other.

Attack of the Clones: I have no idea if there is actually any well-made scene in this movie. The only moment that has ever come close to striking any sort of emotion in my was Shmi’s death scene.

Revenge of the Sith: The silent look between Padme and Anakin on Coruscant, just before Anakin dooms the galaxy.

Solo: Becket and Solo’s confrontation.

Rogue One: ???

A New Hope: Ben Kenobi’s sacrifice. That look he gives to Luke just before facing Vader is iconic.

Empire: The whole Carbon Freezing Chamber scene. Han telling Chewie to take care of the princess has a whole new layer of sadness at the moment.

Return of the Jedi: “The force is strong in my family…” or Luke going crazy on Vader.

Force Awakens: Rey grabbing the saber in the forest.

The Last Jedi: Luke vs. Kylo.

I like the positivity of this. Will do what snooker did:

TPM: Anakin leaving Shmi - “Don’t look back” and that amazing Williams music is good stuff

AOTC: Anakin finding Shmi - pretty much the only real emotion in the whole movie, easily one of the best PT scenes

ROTS: Obi-wan and Padme’s scene together - minus the younglings bit it’s some of the best acting in the PT, and Williams goes into overdrive here (leading as well into the scene immediately following, with Anakin ruminating on Mustafar)

Solo: The one two punch of the Kessel escape and the Kessel Run is up there with the best SW action/adventure sequences

RO: I’m not sure but probably the scene where Jyn sees her father’s hologram - Jones’s acting and the intercutting with the Death Star sell what could have been a painfully dull expositional monologue

ANH: Kind of a lame answer but it’ll always be the binary sunset for me, followed closely by “Use the Force, Luke” - the two best moments in any SW film

TESB: Hard to pick but either when Yoda lifts the X-Wing or when Luke’s parentage is revealed

ROTJ: “I’m a Jedi, like my father before me” “So be it. Jedi.” - no explanation needed

TFA: Rey finding Luke, but also maybe Finn and Poe escaping the Finalizer - both provide an absolutely infectious level of excitement (for different reasons)

TLJ: Hard choice but I’d have to go with Luke and Ben’s confrontation - there’s a lot that it’s accomplishing, but deep down the kid in me most loves that it’s the ultimate fulfillment of Luke as incredible Jedi Master, and the adult in me is so glad that that’s done tactfully and cleverly

ROTS: Emperor’s revenge against Windu.
SW: Vader’s fight with Obi Wan.
ESB: Vader chamber scene or the reveal scene.
ROTJ: Emperor scenes and Vader’s death scene.
RO: Vader scenes.
Honourable mentions: Vader vs Ashoka from Rebels and Maul vs Obi Wan rematch. TCW various Palpatine episodes. Clone marching scene from AOTC. Maul vs Qui Gon from TPM.

TPM: a favorite shot of mine would be when Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon with Jar-Jar are swimming towards Gunga City. Favorite whole scene is probably Anakin saying goodbye to Shmi.

AotC: Obi-Wan ariving on Kamino is pretty great. Anakin finding Shmi too. I’ll pick the former for this not to be too similar to DominicCobb’s.

RotS: opening scene.

SW: trench run.

TESB: Leia, Lando, Chewie and the droids escaping on the Falcon. Or one of the many gems of scenes of Luke on Dagobah. Probably the final part of Luke and Vader’s duel though.

RotJ: Vader’s redemption.

TFA: Rey’s introduction.

TLJ: the reveal of Luke being on Ach-To and his subsequent death.

RO: opening scene.

Solo: Kessel Run.

The Phantom Menace - I honestly love everything about this film apart from the potty humour, so picking a moment is incredibly difficult for me. I would say off the top of my head though the whole sequence of when Anakin is preparing and leaving home. There’s so many layers to it from happiness, cynicism, hope, sadness, innocence, fear, child like wonder, and more. I especially love when Shimi tells Anakin “You can’t stop the change any more than you can stop the suns from setting.” Equally Qui-Gon’s gentle touch of Shimi’s shoulder is a subtle way to point out how flawed the Jedi became in the decades that followed. ‘Anakin is Free’ is equally an incredible piece of music.

Attack of the Clones - Easily Anakin’s search for his mother and the aftermath. The Slave I versus Jedi Starfighter is pretty cool too.

Revenge of the Sith - The opera house scene. I truly enjoy how it adds even more layers and depth to things like Anakin’s origins and tells a tale that may or may not ultimately have merit to The Rise of Skywalker. I am very much looking forward to hopefully knowing who Palpatine was speaking of when he told Anakin a bit later in the film “To cheat death is the power only one has achieved but if we work together I know we can discover the secret.”

A New Hope - Binary Sunset. It has so many layers and meaning. Are the twin suns to symbolize father and son? The Light Side and Dark Side? Our hope and longing? There’s so many ways to look at this scene.

The Empire Strikes Back - This is the hardest one. Either everything with Yoda or Cloud City. I do like when Luke falls down the pit and reaches out to Leia. The music and sorrow is so beautiful. So that.

Return of the Jedi - Could I just say any and all scenes with Luke and Vader? From the moment they confront to the very end. It’s some of the best in the whole saga.

The Force Awakens - When Rey pulls the lightsaber out of the snow. It still gives me all of the feels and something I’ve always wanted but didn’t know just how much I needed. A girl kicking butt with one in live action. Equally when she finds the Force is very moving. I love any and all scenes with Rey.

The Last Jedi - It’s pretty tough. I suppose I could say the Throne Room. It hurt like hell the first viewing as I wanted Snoke to be Plagueis and her to be a Skywalker or Solowalker so much but now I see a very layered scene that I think holds truth to The Rise of Skywalker. It’s going to be very much about learning from the sins of the past and how it doesn’t define us but is important to how we act now. This is very much reflected in the lightsaber and Kylo’s mask being repaired. Runner up is the hand touching in the hut.

Rogue One - The introduction of Chirrut and his character. So spiritual. I love all the Jedha scenes.

Solo - I really don’t know as I’ve only seen it once all the way through. I need to watch it again. Off the top of my head I suppose I’d say Qi’Ra and Han’s reunion as there’s lots of depth between the two of them in that moment.

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas
