To EVERYONE

Can I have a update on what new OT dvd sets people are working on.

Also is anyone working on a 97 SE dvd set, or is there a good enough set already available.

Thanks alot

Not to sound rude, but this forum is for non SE discussion. SE bootlegs are a taboo topic since the official SE trilogy comes out in less than 2 months.

Not quite. There are many numerous changes that have been officially confirmed by people who went to Comic Con where there was a large Star Wars panel. The Emporer in ESB has been replaced by Ian McDiarmid and Hayden Christen will replace Sebastian Shaw as a ghost at the end of ROTJ. There are also many other little changes that have been confirmed. I don't really care for the '97 or the upcoming editions anyway, but I know some others do.

For a little more info. check this thread out here .

Thanks.

Patrick

There are two good copies of the 1997 SE already available. The most common being the "5 Star Collection" and another being the "LOOK / DTS Banner" edition. You can see a screen grab of each menu on this thread. Both feature good DD audio (dont use DTS on either version, as there are issues with the DTS tracks). The 5-Star might be a tad sharper than the other version, but it has the gamma turned up to high; preventing good black level from being obtained (unless you mess with your tvs settings). I personally prefer the "LOOK / DTS Banner" edition, as I don't want to mess with the tv's brightness/contrast to achieve good black level. But it's doesnt really matter as I prefer the original version. To see a mini review I did of these and a few other SW bootlegs, go here.

To me the best version out there is the TR47 original trilogy, but I haven't seen the anamorphic release of the original trilogy - so I can't comment on how that one compares with the TR47...

I'm still waiting for a DVD-R9 of the O-OT w/ PCM sound and anamorphic picture. I just hope someone gets one out like that soon...

I hope the 2004 dvd version isn't going to be referred as the Special Edition or SE - as they are not. There ar a few substantial changes which marks them apart from the 1997SE version.

This could get confusing...

Hopefully they'll be refered to sommat like:-

Theatrical Edition
1997 Special Edition
2004 DVD Edition
and eventually...
Archival Edition

Let us hope and pray to the maker that Stephen Spielberg NEVER gives in to the DARKSIDE...

...For I fear he might follow old George on some damned fool idealistic crusade and attempt to RE-EDIT The Indy Films!!

I hope Spielberg leaves em as they are.

I watched Back to the Future on DVD recent and I was refreshed to hear that Zemekis was against special editions and re-edits. As far as he is concerned you make a film and put it out there. I tend to agree but I still find myself helping to fill Lucas' pockets.

hey all,

just wanted to thank patrick for the lengthy response to my questions the other day, i learned alot from that, i have more...

the dvd player im getting from a friend is a Samsung DV-5000N (1991), anybody know anything about these, www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk doesnt have any info on it although im told it doesnt seem to have a digital audio out.

also, im scoping out definitive edition laser disc sets on ebay and one of the sellers replied to me that there was no indication that there set was either PAL or NTSC, although they did say it was CAV, does anybody know where on the set it specifies NTSC versus PAL

thanks a lot :B

I'm assuming you meant "LD player" here. It doesn't look like any Samsungs had digital audio out, but if you're getting it just for the Definitive Collection LDs, it doesn't matter. They use 2-channel PCM, and you can just use the stereo RCA (red/white) plugs.

As far as I know, the Definitive Collection set was a US-only item, which would make it NTSC. If the seller is from the US, it's definitely NTSC.

does anybody know if the definitive edition was released in PAL? i was all ready to get a set but now im torn, do i go for the resolution of a pal version (left brain), or the version with the best color (right brain)? which pal set do folks think is the best?

Dude, go NTSC all the way. No one wants a DVD-R that runs 4% too fast..

No one wants a DVD-R that has so small resolution as NTSC... And if you use Computer (HTPC) to watch your DVDs you can slow down the speed to original 24fps with ReClock.

Go for the PAL my friend! PAL has the Force in it!

But unfortunately I don't think there are any PAL versions existing... that's quite a problem...

IF a PAL set was captured to PAL with a PAL capture card IT WOULD BE THE SHIT!!!!

My Farscape set is PAL and the SMOKE the NTSC versions! - EVEN thought my TV is NTSC the PAL set is just better

- AND here is some PAL Laserdisc INFO!

BUT I understand the PAL transfers actually BITE - real bad

Some early PAL DVD (and why not LD too) mastering was done by simply stretching NTSC DVD material to PAL resolution. So if those LD PAL releases are done like that, they are worth nothing unfortunately...

The only advantage they would have would be that the NTSC->PAL stretching could possibly be much better than modern PCs can do nowadays. And I doubt that seriously.

Now if there is somewhere a LD PAL release made directly from original film material, that would BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF NTSC

The various PAL discs come up for sale from time to time at ebay.co.uk - in fact:-

I received my Magnolia pre-ANH Star Wars dvd today (cheers Rik ) - am well chuffed with it - just to see the opening crawl changes is very strange (in a good way).

Well worth getting.
