I can never make my mind up about this film. Amazing art direction and puppetry (old school special effects for the win!) but a little weak story wise I guess.

I was never a fan of the Gelflings.

Their faces were too static for humanoid leads, resulting in an uncanny valley effect.

The voice actors sound too similar, there is often not enough variation.

Other than that I love it including the story.

I love it. Something about the mythic ending that there needs to be a re-joining, rather than a destruction of an enemy is very appealing.

Wish there were more films like this. Puppetry pwns

I heard once that Henson wanted the Skeksys to speak a foreign language, and we'd just have to make inferences as to what they were saying, but the studio balked.

I've loved the movie ever since childhood.  I think it's accessible to a wide audience while still retaining the feeling that you're stepping into another world with a rich history (kind of like a light version of Dune or Lord of the Rings).

The music is pretty cool too, and you can't beat the Garthim for scary-ass bad guys.

I wonder how well the planned sequel will turn out.

I'm betting they will CGI it to death and it will stink.

There's footage of that on all the releases of the films - single DVD, 2 disc DVD and BluRay.  The BD also has an introduction by the writer explaining that when they decided the foreign language idea wasn't working, he spent an entire weekend with Henson going through the film making notes as to mouth movements and timings of the Skeksis scenes so they could figure out new English language dialogue that would sync up.

Side note - only the single DVD edition includes an isolated music track.  What's a simple freeware program that can rip the audio track so I can make myself a soundtrack CD?

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

I love the puppetry but truly did not enjoy the story.  Labyrinth was a step up in story and a step down in special effects.  Not that the puppetry is bad, but I have to be honest that The Dark Crystal is literally the best puppetry I've ever seen.

was talking about this film with a friend last week, pointing out how "actual" is this story, metaphoricly, though reality catch fiction pretty quick...

1- There's the "scientific"/"social" part, from how the "vilains" are hijacking the population's energy to feed their interests. (Think about all what you worry about, what sucks your time, energy and money). ;)

2- There's the "sacred"/"scientific knowledge" part with that great conjonction that is also meant to be used by the "vilains", but the wises are well awared of it (they understand it better actually).

Not only it sounds very actual as a whole picture, but some events like the great conjunction of the 12.21.2012 (at 11:11, universal time) may well accentuate that... reality.

OK, I think some are gonna laugh at me because they ignore what's up on that date... Two things:

1- The center of the galaxy will be aligned wit the Sun and the Earth (the Sun eclipsing it), forming a perfect cross with Jupiter and Mars. Happens all the 5000 years or so... The Mayas knew it, among others.

2- The end of the US president mandate.

So much for one day.

I have to agree with those who find the film strong on a technical level but weak on the story.

If you can find the limited edition 2 disc soundtrack that came out a few years back, the complete score is included plus the original album version.

DVDFab to rip the disc to your PC.

pgcdemux to isolate the audio to an ac3 file.

From there, take your pick of various converter programs to convert the ac3 to the format of your choice.

I thought DVDFab could rip directly to MP3?

The critiscism I'd give is that this film got a little old now, visualy speaking. And though I like the story, it misses a little something maybe.

I like The Dark Crystal, but not as much as Labyrinth, for obvious reasons. (see username, avatar, profile picture, and most of my posts)

Dunno, never heard that before. I always get vob files.

I usually get .wmv's or .avi's.  I'm usually ripping TV shows (that I own on DVD) to my media server for my kids.  The other thing I rip is audio commentaries from DVDs.  I usually still rip these to wmv and put them on my Zune... but I'm pretty sure MP3 is an option as well.

You're talkin' about the lack of Jennifer Connelly, right?

It's interesting to me that the Podlings in The Dark Crystal are basically alternate-universe versions of the Ewoks, but nobody complains about them.

Also, I was quite startled the first time I heard Aughra talk in the film's invented language, because the command she uses to get her gatekeepers to move aside ("Bougez!") is clearly derived from French.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

I love this film.  It is on the top of my list of films to get on bluray if I ever find a job and every have cash to spend in the future.

I’m really enjoying it - it feels a natural progression on from the film, yet still with many familiar tropes and the feel of the original too.
