MagnoliaFan Edition Episode III-VI Titles

Author
Time
Just curious if anyone had any feedback as to what they think I should title the edits of III-VI.

The Empire Strikes Back, I am keeping as the title for V. I'm pretty firm on that.

Jedi, I'm pretty sure to call "Revenge of the Jedi", reverting to the original title.
Sure, revenge may not be a Jedi trait, but in the end it's Anakin who takes revenge on Palpatine, so the title still fits.

Episode III, I'm still up in the air on, since I have yet to see the film, nor hear the official title.
With 1 and 2, I knew the title the moment I watched the last scene of the film.
That'll probably be the case again here.
If anyone does have any cool original title suggestions (that aren't on 1000 other website listings already) I'll take note of any that really strike me. Preferably one with a four word title ala "The Empire Strikes Back".

The one I'm really on the fence on is Episode IV, though. I have never really cared for the title "A New Hope".
I mean, if it were a standalone film, would a movie called "A New Hope" really draw you in?
At the same time, I've never really heard any decent alternate titles tossed around for it either.
Once again, open to suggestions. Preferably a title that still fits the 3 word name scheme, ala "A New Hope" or "The Clone War".

an Ep3 suggestion (found on SW offal BBS) - 'Mask Of Deception'

Something containing, or another word for 'deception' would be appropiate?

For Ep4 how about a title focusing on the Rebellion's 1st major victory of the Empire?

and perhaps for Ep6 '?' of the Jedi (? = another word for re-emergence)?

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

Here's the thing, there's a certain cadence to the majority of the Star Wars titles. Except for episode 1 and 4, all of the subtitles have been 4 words long, 5 syllables.

It's difficult to come up with a title for Episode IV which feels appropriate. there are a lot of sources to draw from, you could call it The Son of the Suns in referrence to the Journal of the Whills, You could go with one of the Radio Drama episode titles like A wind to shake the stars, but neither of those really feel right to me. I think Son of the Suns is to esoteric, and wind just kinda lame.

It might be easier once we know what episode III is going to be called.

here's one off the top of my head

Flame of Rebellion (or Flame of the Rebellion, or The Flame of Rebellion, or The Flame of the Rebellion. sensing a theme here?)

Don't touch the RotJ, ANH or TESB titles...

Personally, I'm hoping for the century-old RotS or Rot(a)E title for Ep. III.

Time
I've never been too fond of "A New Hope." I prefer just plain Star Wars myself. But "The Son of the Suns" is a good suggestion. You could put a text shot just before "A long time ago..." that reads "... and in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as The Son of The Suns." Journal of the Whills, 3:127

Or perhaps "Episode IV: The Hidden Fortress." (An apt title with an obvious homage)

As far as episode III goes, you should probably wait for an official title before choosing something. I came up with "The Imperial Machine" as a title. A reference to both the Empire's systematic rise to power and elimination of the Jedi, and to Darth Vader himself, the ultimate machine.

Ehm, not having seen the Magnoliafan Edit (I'm going to buy it next month, thanks Rikter) so I have a couple of questions.

- Is the quality still the same as the "original"
- How do you "edit" these movies. FX and GFX wise ?
- Do you incorporate your own ideas or do you change other people's ideas in the edit aswell.

Just interested. Coz I had never heard of people "re-doing" a movie.

Oh, and since the titles of EP1 and 2 are also altered, I'd change the 4/5/6 ones too.

Thnx.

I'm yet to see your re-edits of the first two films (they are in the mail, thanks to Rikter!) and i'm hanging out to see them as I've heard a lot of good reports about them, but I was bit shocked to read that you're contemplating doing re-edits of the original trilogy , as the general concensus seems to be that these should remain untampered with . Although I'm more than a little curious as to what could possibly be added to (or removed from) the original trilogy, but I guess Return of the Jedi could do with some stategic editing.

but as for changing the titles, is it really necessary?, I must admit that I never really liked the rebranding of StarWars to 'A New Hope' it always seemed a bit wish-washy, but given it's position in the overall film cycle, it does seem to be the most appropriate title, and as for 'Revenge of the Jedi' it doesn't really fit into what happens within the movies themes of Vader returning from the darkside, although Redemption of the Jedi is probably a bit of a mouthfull.

Whats up Magnolia. Thanks for posting on the Lost footage thread. I am going to come up with a list of some stuff, but it will take some time. As for titles...Revenge of the Jedi is much better since it sounds cooler and was the original title, besides...your edits are different, so having different titles seems all the more appropriate to me. Even changing A new hope and ESB is fine, assuming there are notable changes, and considering you had 2000 in TPM that goes without saying. As for Ep. III I have read the two titles that are up in the air (READ NO GUARANTEES OR FLAMES BY OTHER MEMBERS) are "revenge of the Sith and "rise of the empire" So there is a similar ring to ESB with on and to close to "revenge of the jedi" as well if they choose on of those 2. How about editing out the Gungans and editing wookies? (just kidding magnolia...inside joke). I will post more soon. Glad you are taking on the project though, we are all truly grateful for giving the fans what they wanted. Thank you.

Basically, I'm not heavily screwing with IV and V.
A few little trims that have to do with something I'm doing in III for continuity (and preserving a few moments in the OT) and then I'll also probably use certain SE (and whatever we decide to dub this new version) shots in moderation while omitting other SE changes altogether.
Ie: When Luke takes the plunge in ESB, he looks terribly transparent in the original version. He looks more solid in the SE, but does that stupid scream, so I'll probably combine the SE video with the OE audio.
If there are deleted scenes in the documentary on the dvd set, I'll look them over for possible integration too. Don't really look for me to reinvent the wheel where it isn't needed.
Alderaan will not be shooting first.
Jedi will probably get slightly more changes, especially reflecting a big change I'm making to III. It's not really a matter of things being cut as much as shifted around a little.
I do have a couple cool ideas for additions to the climax of Jedi though that should be uber cool if they actually work.

And I do think the Revenge title fits because its Anakin, once again as a Jedi, taking revenge on Palpatine for manipulating him into a life of servitude and in turn destroying everything Anakin held dear.

As far as how I technically made all the changes to TPM and AotC... Very carefully.

A lot of the story elements I added were ideas from early drafts of SW and TPM that I liked, but were not used. Then again, a lot were a lot little "what ifs" on my part.
I think I only took a couple suggestions on EP I and II, which were from my roommate at the time.
One had to do with recutting the Jira scene... He didn't like the way she looked all squirrelly eyed.
I can't remember any others off hand, but there were not many. Most changes were just personal preferences.
I kind of avoid suggestions, since I end up getting comments like "Could you make Jar Jar not sound so much like Jar Jar?", "Can you replace Natalie Portman in Episode II with Kiera Knightley?" or "Could you replace all the Gungans in TPM with Wookiees?" (the inside joke alluded to earlier)

BTW: "The Hidden Fortress" title gave me chills, cool idea, especially as the rebel face is referred to as their "Hidden Fortress" in the film. I was considering dropping a subtitle altogether and going with just Star Wars: Episode IV, but now I'm really considering that one. Might need a tweak or two to the crawl, though...

If we do get some of the "lost cut" as deleted scenes in the trilogy in september do you see adding any of that? I'd love to see the biggs scenes, Han making out with the prostitute, etc. Also, you said you had those scenes from Behind the Magic, but let me know if they are good clips, I now have the disc and could get you a copy if you want to use any of it, though it may be a moot point if that footage is covered in the new box set. Did you read the Titus Fan Fiction of Ep. III on another thread I started in this forum? It may give you some ideas of the direction its heading and Luke added a link on that thread of another good summary by an insider. Again I am looking forward to getting my copies of your first two. I would love to see you add a commentary or list of changes somehow so that we can truly appreciate the time you've invested and why you decided to do those changes. You said you have the Ewok movies as well. Any chance of editing those? You could maybe use a short scene or two for the star wars movies you're editing, but I was thinking about editing those movies and adding some of ROTJ into them and making those better or somehow combing pieces of the two for one movie that has a darker more dramatic tone (episode VII?)...maybe even use some of the fan films as side stories as to what happens post VI...not sure just thinking aloud here. (PLEASE OTHER MEMBERS AGAIN NO FLAMES, I am challenging you to think outside the box and not trying to desecrate our sacred trilogy...which is why I said a seperate film). But those movies are there and have a specialness all their own, though certainly not as epic, quality or as big budget as I-VI, but they may have usuable material.

I think "The Hidden Fortess" sounds pretty bad ass too...

Hopefully we will get those deleted scenes, found this is over at the digital bits:

Yeah, we know this is going to get some people's undies in a bunch again... but we can say with some confidence now that when Lucasfilm and Fox release the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD in September, the films ARE going to include new footage. We've confirmed "unofficially" with three separate sources, each in positions to know, that at least SOME new footage is being added to the films, and that more special effects enhancements, tweaks and fixes are being done. We're also told that Lucasfilm MAY include additional deleted scenes for the trilogy on the bonus disc, separate from the material added into the films themselves (rather like they've done with Episodes I & II). We've been told of at least a few changes that have been made, but we're going to wait to confirm them better before we post anything. So, okay... we're now officially intrigued. We'll post more when we can.

From what I hear, the deleted scenes may be included in a section of the documentary and a few will be reintegrated into the film... And yes, I was going to examine them to see if they could be fit in with out screwing up the original films.

Unfortunately, the Behind the Magic scenes are not quite restored to a level where they can be reinserted without standing out, but I'm hoping they are cleaned up further for the dvd.

And I already have a pretty good handle on how EP III is shaping up, so I kind of know where I'm going with that... unless drastic changes are made between now and May.

Why does Hayden look drunk in Jedi? His hair is all ruffled and he looks like he's had one too m any glasses of Beru's "special blue-milk".

Magnoliafan
"Could you replace all the Gungans in TPM with Wookiees?"

Great idea! Get cracking Mf.

Dear God...I've just seen the clip, and I personally thought I saw Hayden's customary horny look in the clip. It's terrible. Whoever made that photoshop picture on AICN several months back did a better job than Lucas's professionals. I'm sickened by the lack of talent Lucas's lackeys have.

Yeah....
Anyone else think Hayen is picturing Leia in that metal bikini when he looks at them?
I can almost hear him, "Hey baby... You ever been with the chosen one?"

Oy vay... After seeing this, maybe I'll just add myself in as the force ghost next to Yoda and Obi-Wan...
Lord knows I could make it look better than that...

On second thought Ani, maybe you should pass that beer bong this way...

That's what I figured you'd be doing all along. Righting Lucas' wrongs.

BTW, the official title for Episode III has been revealed. Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith

Yeah...
I saw that a little while ago...

Now up in the air with the Revenge/Return of the Jedi thing...
To keep Ep 3's title or to change it.

Titles as of now:

Balance of the Force
The Clone War
_________ (Revenge of the Sith)
The Hidden Fortress
The Empire Strikes Back
_________ (Return of the Jedi)

And to clarify as far as the Hayden ghost thing goes, I guess it wouldn't bother me if it weren't so half assed...
First, matting his head on the old body just looks bad. When he lowers his head, his jaw magically vanishes into his robe for a moment where they matted the body on.
It might have been cool to see Ewan, Hayden and (for the first time) a truly young Yoda as ghosts all reunited, but to just reward Anakin for turning evil seems stupid...
Might as well show a redeemed Palpatine standing right there with them.

I like the way Revenge and Return counterpoint eachother, I would leave those titles as-is. The do however have a few minor qualms with "The Hidden Fortress" as a title though.

First, it's refering to a very specific and tangible thing, while none of the other titles do that.

Second, that tangible thing, depending on your point of view, is either (and most likely) the rebel base, or the Death star. Either way, it's a thing that, while certainly a part of the story, does not really embody the story. I think the titles should really Embody the overall story of the film. Balance of the force does that nicely, as the whole thing is very much about the balance of the force between good and evil. The Clone War again embodies the main thrust of the film. The empire strikes back completely embodies the story of the 5th film, and Return of the Jedi certainly embodies the 6th.

Thirdly, since it's taking the title directly from the film which inspired star wars, it almost seems like a rip off at that point. it's like "Star Wars is so much like the hidden fortress, we decided to call it the hidden fortress too!" I dunno, it just doesn't really do anything for me, I prefer A New Hope to the Hidden Fortress, at least it's original. After posting initially, "The Flame of Rebellion" really grew on me, I have no idea why, just felt right in my head. You of course must follow your own heart and artistic instincts, I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
