Should Star Wars Purists Shut Up?

Author
Time
Hey folks:

I've recently stood up a new website against the new trilogy. Here's the link:

I Hate the New Star Wars

I can't believe the amount of hate mail and hate comments I've received ever since. Most folks say I should just shut up and go away.

Personally I think Star Wars purists shouldn't shut up but should stir the pot as much as possible.

What do you all think?

By reading through your site I take it you don't like TPM and AOTC much?

Maybe your site could do with more in-depth reasons as to why your dislike of Eps 1 & 2 - whether it be the pacing, editing, the look of the film, acting, content etc - and maybe even what you did like or enjoy about them too (if any).

I have to say that I too was disappointed with the results I saw at the cinema - not so much with the story (which could have been done a lot better), but by the general look and editing of the film.

For me some of the actors do not deliver decent quality scenes when they have no or little sets to act in - the CGI world of Lucas has taken away something of world they are acting in - and their ability too...

The editing of the film left it almost detached of being an SW film - some of the characters were the same, but it felt that they were in a different franchise. The MagnoliaFan and Phantom Edits, to me, are both works that show how badly the pacing the editing of Lucas' version of TPM and AOTC were. Though you may not like the story of Eps 1 & 2 I hope you find the MF and PE version more in keeping with the OT.

If you havn't seen them, give them a go and seek them out and let us know what you think.

A little patience goes a long way on this old-school Rebel base. If you are having issues finding what you are looking for, these will be of some help…

So does this guy have a point to all this? What a bunch of pointless dribble. It is just his opinion. Who cares? Not me. Waste of time.

Coffee, maybe it is pointless dribble to you. Hey, it's your opinion and you're entitled to it. That's what is so wonderful about the web, you can have an opinion and share it with millions of people for a relatively low cost. Me? I find Erich's posts to be quite funny and insightful. I don't have to agree with them all, but I enjoy reading them and will continue to read them. Way to post, Erich. Effectively, he's doing the same thing I do on my site, rant. He's just a bit more directed (anti-PT) than I am.

Never shut up, Erich. It's your right to have an opinion and your post about movies as consumer products explains it all too clearly. Until you are given the opportunity to obtain a refund on a movie, sharing your opinion (be it positive or negative) is really your only recourse.

You are now bookmarked in my browser.

My God, you really are slow, Luke. I've had that in my signature almost since the beginning of this site.

Don't worry, folks, Luke and I are oldtimers here and have been friends the whole time. We can talk this way to each other and not get offended. So don't worry about some flame war breaking out.

Good site, Erich, and welcome to the boards! You'll find here that a majority of us agree with you on varying levels, so I hope you post here again! I'm not as anti-PT as you, but I did agree with a most of your points. I especially liked your History Channel analogy, because 'The Hitler Channel' is a running joke between my best friend and I, since we watch it often. And you're right about the screwing up of Anakin's age. One of the first things Lucas could have done was bump the prequels up on the chronology, placing the first one immediately preceeding the Clone Wars and introducing an Anaking just coming out of adolescence. The second and third would take place during the Clone Wars, as Anakin falls closer and closer to the Dark Side, on a path parallel to, but the polar opposite of, Luke's. But Lucas has become arrogant, believing himself to be flawless in his intellect, so what we have is a very flawed trilogy. But though I can stand the prequels, and actually watch them, I have infinitely more enjoyment with Luke's story, so I watch the classics more often. I'll be linking to your site on my blog, and I'll be looking forward to your future posts!

That was one helluva rant, Erich. And it really does make sense. It's a logical way to reason through Jabba's existence.

I'm convinced.

I enjoyed reading your comparison of Jabba to Al Capone, and it made perfect sense up to a point, now forgive me if i'm wrong it has been a little while since I last watched Return of the Jedi, but doesn't Jabba say something to Luke along the lines of 'I've been hunting Jedi since before you were born!' now whether Jabba was boasting and bragging we'll never know unless he actually appears in Episode 3 hunting down Jedi as part of the Jedi purge. But it would make sense that he was more than just an up and coming thug at the time of A New Hope.

and from my limited knowledge of the EU, aren't the Hutt Clans meant to be quite established leaders in organised crime, it's quite likely that he was handed down the position, rather than worked his way up through the ranks.

I think it's pretty obvious in A New Hope, that Han Solo is almost too cocky for his own good (it's his personality) which is why he sass's Jabba and thinks he can get away with it.

Again this is just another point of view.

buddy x, I don't remember Jabba saying that at all in ROTJ. Was that an SE line or something? Maybe I'm blanking out on it, but I always considered myself relatively knowledgeable regarding the dialogue in that movie. Maybe I'm really getting old. Who knows?

As for being handed down the position... maybe Jabba inherited it, but that's not how it works in real-life organized crime. You are not given the position based on genetics because you have to earn the respect of the rest of your crime family. Imagine if Al Capone's son was some pimply faced weasel with no sign of backbone or initiative and then Al gave him the "throne" upon his own death. The family would faction off because there would be no respect for the successor. You have to work your way up through the ranks. If you happen to be blood relative who has worked his way up and is next in line, so be it. But it wasn't you're bloodline that got you there.

The prequels are Star Wars. If he hates them he hates Star Wars.

Wrong. You don't have to like every single Star Wars movie to like Star Wars. Are you saying that because he hates the prequels he hates the originals, too? Because he clearly likes the original Star Wars movies, but not the prequels. So it IS possible to love the originals but hate the prequels and it does NOT mean he hates Star Wars.

But I'm going to go by your logic now. The Star Wars Holiday Special is also Star Wars. So everyone who doesn't like it doesn't like Star Wars, right? If so, then I guess George Lucas doesn't like Star Wars either.
