He just means it's not the quality of a DVD 5 (single layer), which you and I can agree is potentially less than that of a DVD 9 (dual layer). Two DVD 10s can have a (slightly) higher bit rate, but then you are swapping discs. It's an individual choice as to which trade-off you want: higher compression, or no disc swaps. Then we get into DVD changers to solve that and.....ugh.

It just goes on and on.

So, are there any "compatibility lists" for dual-layered media and stand-alone players yet? Hell, I've not even seen ads for the media, even though the burners are all over the place. What is the average price?

I've also seen one or two firmware updates for some existing burners to make them dual-layer capable. I'll have to find that thread again.

Finally finished watching the torrent files of Star Wars. I watched those and the TR47 set back to back. I also did some side by side comparisons to really check stuff out. So here it goes.....

In picture quality the TR47 set comes out just a bit on top. Colors look a little better and the entire picture is a bit crisper when compared to the anamorphic set. Both sets seemed a bit soft to me. I wanted to check these against the laserdisc set I used to have but I can’t find those anywhere. I may have sold them. At any rate the laserdiscs may have been just as soft in focus. The Anamorphic set came out a bit weird on the anamorphic too. It seemed to me to be off as far as framing goes. It looked closer to somewhere around 2:00.1 as compared to 2:35.1. This could just be the set I downloaded and not the sets that are floating around here. I'm not sure of that but that is what I got out of it when played on my TV.

Final judgment on video...I would go with either set. As the video goes they both look good. Personally I like the TR47 set better but if you’re that concerned about hitting zoom on your remote just get the anamorphic. The improper framing on my set really wasn't even that big of a deal it was just something I noticed and wanted to point out to people. Again it could just be my set. Oh and yes the “Leia welding scene” IS missing from the anamorphic set.

As far as sound the TR47 set blows away the anamorphic set. It's a no contest here. The TR47 had a better sound stage presence with clean sweeps and pan from channel to channel. The anamorphic set was a bit hollow in its sound and seemed a bit forced to the rear speakers. It was weak when it even did appear in the rear channels, which wasn’t often enough for my liking. With a Prologic II receiver the TR47 set sound really close to a 5.1 mix (or as close as you will get in a bootleg) where as the anamorphic set sounds like a plain old vanilla surround mix that occasionally graces us with some sound out of the rear channels. Not much better than I get out of my VHS set to be honest with you.

As far bonus stuff goes...I should say up front that I hate bonus stuff. I really don't care much for it and never have. Now occasionally something will grab my interest but most of the time it's the same old crap over and over again. I would much rather see a movie only version of everything that just maxes out the sound and video presentation and doesn’t squeeze it onto a disc with bonus stuff. Again this is just my opinion. So with that it would be very unfair for me to judge this stuff. It's really the same on both sets with the exception of the commentary on the anamorphic set. You can all guess what I think of that just from what I wrote above so it's really up to you to decide on weather or not you need a commentary track from what I hear isn’t even a full on commentary track. (No I didn’t even listen to it)

WITH EVERYTHING SAID AND DONE...
The TR47 set was superior in both Video and Audio quality. However the video is only a slight step up from the anamorphic set. The anamorphic set does have the bonus feature of the commentary track but it severely sacrifices sound quality for this little thing. The bonus fourth disc is the same on both but in all honesty I didn't even bother trying to find the fourth disc for the anamorphic set so I’m not really sure if it is the same. Perhaps someone else knows about that.

So what it really comes down to is how well your TV can handle zoom. If you can handle that well or have a DLP/LCD front projector you should probably go with the TR47 set. If bonus stuff really concerns you go with the other set. Both sets are really nice representations of the original Star Wars movies with a few differences in between. The question is how big of a fan boy are you? Do you want one or both? All I know is that I'm really sick of Star Wars now. I have watched way too much of it in the past three days.

I know the feeling. See how you feel after spending weeks just trying to make the movies.

Mackey,
Thanks for helping cement the fact my version is the best around, and hopefully will become the standard for which others are judged. I think the softness you mentioned is due more to the fact that you're watching an LD transfer on a large HD 16:9 TV, not due to the transfer itself. I believe any LD would look soft compared to a DVD since the resolution isn't as high as a non anamorphic DVD transfer. Unfortunately it seems this is the best we're ever going to get! BTW the bonus disc is the same for both sets.

Does anyone know if the TR47 set is available as torrents (or on any other form of P2P network) anywhere?

Feel free to repost that review as well as the other review if you want Ritker. I really don't mind. I did those basically to put a bit of a hold on people trying to figure out which set is best. Really it comes down to how much bonus stuff you want I guess.

It's a quality over quantity thing....

First time post, but here goes:

In the interests of getting the various bootleg DVDs out and in circulation, could some of the people who have them please post them to Usenet? I know I'm talking to a very narrow slice of the enthusiast bell curve here: Those who read this board, have the DVDs, and know what Usenet is, but it would get out to more people than just those here on this board.

For those who don't know what Usenet is, it's a network of discussion groups, categorized by a hierarchical structure. Groups.google.com archives many of them, but there are hundreds of thousands of unique groups not archived by Google. The most prolific are those which begin with the prefix alt.binaries... as those are the ones which actually contain binary data. It is possible to post full DVDs to some of these groups, and in fact, this is frequently done. Good groups to post these DVDs to would be alt.binaries.dvd, alt.binaries.dvdr, or alt.binaries.starwars.

Posting the files is, admittedly, a time consuming exercise, and involves creating a disc image (such as an iso or mdf/mds set), compressing that into a series of .rar files, and then using a program like Agent newsreader to post those files.

I'm willing to do this for the TR47 set, although I won't be able to until sometime next month, as they have been borrowed from me.

The anamorphic set gets posted on usenet from time to time. I'm sure it will come around again.

I am surprised that there are not more people who have the TR47 or anamorphic versions available to download on Kazaa or other similar 'sites'.

Any reason for this?

I'm not sure but I'm planning on posting in AFTER I post all my rare titles on the torrents

I wish they would fix the missing 7 seconds from the ESB Torrent. I may try to edit it back in there, but I know it will be a pain and I don't know how the results will be.

I think DVDToAVI will convert VOBs to AVI files where they can be edited and reencoded. Not sure though as I've never done that before.

Really? That's awesome! You have so many of those rare treasures, and you'll put them up for us to download.

Thank you!

BTW: On the pre SE trilogy torrent files, thank you to everyone who continues to seed them.

My ESB and ROTJ downloads are going very fast. However, the ANH download is literally moving at 0.01 KB/S.

Can somebody please seed ANH who isn't already? Thanks.

Hi everybody,

it's my first post here but I've been a regular visitor of this forum. For today, I wanted to thank Rikter for his great offer on the Original Trilogy DVDS. (I'm talking about the Anamorphic set).

All in all, it's a very good set: the picture has some minor flaws (hey, you can't expect a TPM or AOTC DVDs for this kind of stuff: after all, it's "only" a LD rip). I was just a little surprised that the picture was not 2:35 scope (maybe 2:20) so you lose a little bit of image on each side of the screen. On the contrary, the Dolby surround mix was awesome (i've heard that the non-amorphic set has a better sound but I'm pretty happy by how the discs sound: especially ROTJ). The supplements are good but far from perfect: not enough footage from the shooting of the films (only on the SFx). I still miss the original making-of from 78, 80 and 82 (another story about originals ).

I come from france and Rikter sent me the pack as soon as he received my message (Is he be the fastest man alive to sent DVDs?).And his covers are just awesome.

So thank U man for this set. And to everybody: be grateful to have a fan like Ritker on your community, he can spread the good word faster than anyone.

I haven't used Torrents before. I've tried to use them, but haven't had much luck. Right now, I'm trying to get the Clone Wars episodes from the site Rikter mentioned, but my torrent status keeps saying 'connecting to peers.' Does it normally show that for awhile or should it take right off. I'm on a campus server, so that may have something to do with (though I hope it doesn't). Could anybody give me any hints? Thanks.

You're probably behind a campus firewall that's configured in some screwy way, or your OIT (Office of Information Technology) has decided to block commonly used peer-to-peer ports (in the 6999 range) in an attempt to save bandwidth. Heaven knows OIT people love to have towers of unused bandwidth.

"Check it out, Bob. We're running a T3 line, and with the new port blocking, it's only pulling 26kbps."
"You know, Phil, you're a real jerk."

As far as I know, there is no solution to this problem short of getting your internet elsewhere. If there is, I'd love to hear it. I haven't been able to use bittorrent in months because of this. Heck, my campus just recently started blocking port 6667, claiming that IRC was tying up 30% of their bandwidth usage. I'd believe it if DCC transfers didn't take place on random ports.

I think this may have been asked here? It could have been another forum too so if I ask it again I'm sorry.

To TR47

Are going to try and put the missing C3P0 line back into A New Hope for the dual layered versions?

Never mind. I'll just figure out another way to get ahold of the Clone Wars episodes (it wouldn't be a problem if the Star Wars site would just allow non-Hyperspace members to watch the episodes). Can anyone help me find a non-P2P source for downloading the episodes?

Once the DVDs come out, we could work out a SUPER O-OT DVD.
*gasp*

We could edit the LD footage into the SE DVD footage when appropriate to block out the parts that *make* it the SE.

For the sake on continuity, the DVD audio should be downgraded to 2.0 stereo. This is actually closer the original is anyway.

This would allow us to fix common O-OT errors, such as Threepio's missing line and the "Close the blast doors" line.

If needed, we could have the LD footage gradually blend in and not be sudden and jerky to keep it looking natural.

If just us common folk with no professional equipment could fit such amounts of data on a single home made DVD is another thing though...

And maybe if the person making it is nice...

they could do it for free??
Lol joking

After thinking over the question I posed earlier in the day I have decided that splicing the 3PO line in and making it sound GOOD is nigh impossible. It's probably easier to just rip the PCM audio and say forget it.

But I could be wrong.

That is exactly what I intend to do - make a de-specialed special edition. Depending on how whacked out the SE DVD's turn out to be.
With the gear and expertise we have, it should be possible to integrate the LD footage back in and colour grade it to fit without a really noticable change. The obvious way to do this is to insert footage at cut points, so that although you may end up inserting a little more footage than is required, it comes in and out at a cut point so is not as noticable.
I am hoping that the audio mix on the SE will be a lot better, in which case I will be keeping it and only adding/removing audio as required.

I am also doing an 'archival' version of the LD's, which will be pretty much just a straight copy with a mild colour grade at the highest possible quality, (with the missing lei footage) with no extras, no additional audio tracks etc. Just the movies at the highest bitrate possible. Am Also toying with doing a WMV9 version for PC playback, as the quality would be better, and there are some WMV9 players coming onto the home player market as well.
