I received my DVDs through the post today (didn't realise it was so quick to post stuff from the USA to the UK) - was really impressed with the picture and sound quality of all the 3 films and the bonus disc has some great intriguing pieces on it too.

Some fantastic work and many thanks to DigitalFreakNYC - unlike many others I havn't paid through the nose like on ebay and other similar offers - great stuff that a fellow SW fan has made a concious effort NOT to profit at the expense of other fans.

Well worth getting.

Just to clear a few things up and ask some more questions

1) Laserdisc is an analogue picture format, with the option for Digital AC3 sound (i.e. Dolby Digital).
2) There is no way to 'directly' transfer the picture from Laserdisc to the PC - You must digitize the video. The serial port som LD players have is to control the laserdisc player from the PC , like a cord remote control.
3) Pioneer did make industrial LAserdisc Players with RGB component out - This may be the best quality you will get.
4) Any digitizing should be done first with a lossless Codec like huffy, and with a card that supports full 4:4:4 or at least 4:2:2
5) It should then be transcoded to DVD or even better to WMV9 for better quality for those people running HTPCs

I would love to do a full broadcast quality transfer, but the definitive trilogy Laserdics are not available in Australia, at all

Now the questions!

1) Why don't the people who have decent DVD copies reseed them as torrents? That is the whole idea of bittorrent that the more people that get it, the faster and more available it is to all.

2) Is the definitive Laserdisc set in Dolby digital (AC3) or PCM?

3) I have an idea for a new project, i.e. re-editing the special edition DVDs.
The transfer on these will be better than the Laserdisc originals, and the Audio will be far superior. My idea is to use the SE as a base, and re-edit it to remove the offensive new stuff, and then re-insert any replacement footage from the Laserdisc versions.
We have the gear here to colour correct and match the footage qualities from the two versions to make it pretty seamless.
I would be intending to leave in true improvements ( such as the improved mattes in the snowspeeder scenes in Empire) but cut out the horrible things like the cantina scene, and all the new comic relief elements, Jabba and so on. That is, only really leave in the 'error corrections'

Of course I gotta get my hands on the LD set...

Wadda y'all think.

Nice idea Laserman.

Try dropping a line to DigitalFreakNYC at DigitalFreakNYC@aol.com to get hold of a copy of the OT on DVD

Althoug this is my first post I, I have been a regular visitor to this forum and I'm totally with you in your attempt to save the Original Triology of Star Wars.

This bootleg subject has caught my attention, and I have read all the pages and found out that this subject has became a complete mess!! We need to compile all the information and compare, trully compare, these differente bootlegs versions !!

I sujest the following:

Every one tries to describe at best their version, the technical details and the content (extras and others), and then everything is organized and joined in one single thread to compare the pros and cons of each version.

Screenshots are essential, and must be taken in the most identical way possible by everyone.
I suggest everyone downloads this aplication so that the screenshot are independent as possible of software and contrast/brightness settings etc..

Open the vobs from you DVDs with the VirtualDubMod executable, choose a ramdom frame of the movie, and just press "Shift+1" to save a screenshot of the movie in PNG.
Put as the filename, the frame number if possible (it is under the slider)
Send them to me and I will host them if you need to.

sergio.miranda@sapo.pt

After the first screenshots are posted here, I hope that people try to take similair shots of the same parts in their DVD to compare all versions in a equal way.
Screnshots of the menus can be taken if the right .VOB is open.
Go to "File"->"File Information" to cess very detailed information on the MPEG2 and audio stream. Post it too if possible.

This may become something that requires some work but isn't this all we want?? To have the best possible version to keep the OT intact??
If I could get my hands on all these bootlegs out there, I would join up the good parts of the several versions and to ultimatly create the best possible DVD, but I don't live in the Us and I can't get them easealy so I must rely in the information you provide to decide witch one to get.

I would create a new topic just with the important stuff but I want to get some impressions first...

Just one more question, already partially made by LaserMan:
Some boolegs refer to having Dolby Digital 5.1 souns. Did any of the laserdiscs have this?' or is it the work of someone using another LD source??
Can you give me some explanations of the diferences between the several LD editions of the OT??

OK, the different laserdisc versions are reviewed here:
http://www.dvdscan.com/starwarsLD.htm
snip!
The Defintive Collection is in CAV, and despite the haze over the image due to dust on the elements the quality is still impressive. Resolution and detail are very good, only colour rendition does not meet expectations. The PCM sound is just as impressive with excellent bandwidth and dynamic performance. The bass frequencies well developed without any sign of overdrive. The mix itself is wide in stage presence and instruments & effects can be very well distinguished.

I have started a new topic "OT bootleg DVD reviews" for people to put their reviews in.

I just hope that people doing it get really detailed, and multiple reviews on identical versions are put together to make things simple...

I have given some ideas...just follow them,please...

I agree with Laserman that folks who have downloaded the 'anamorphic' bootleg set should reseed. I am still seeding Empire, Jedi and the 4th disc. Just restart the .torrent and 'replace' the directory you already downloaded -- after an integrity check it will start uploading your files to others.

Laserman, I'm also in Australia (Wollongong, NSW) and after a good set of anamorphic DVD-R's for these movies as well. Unfortunately TR47 won't send discs outside the US and digitalfreaknyc never replied to my email. If you can manage to get an anamorphic set, I'll gladly split the costs with you, benefiting us both. Please let me know. Cheers.

Rikter,

You may want to lay off posting your list every SINGLE page. It gets to be showing off at a certain point.

Just a thought...

I tried to change my avatar some time ago, and I kept getting an error message when I tried to upload it. I'll try again later.

Still dunno if he's fixed it. You may have to e-mail Jay with the avatar you would like to use in its place. There's a thread discussing it in the Off Topic Section of this forum.

There are apparently only two that matter. I don't see the point.
