Hence why I was so damn confused. What are you doing with regard to bootlegs, Luke?

At this point it seems like the quality of the movies themselves are pretty similar. I went for the anamorphic set because (a) it was a free download, (b) it's got the extra "commentary" tracks, and (c) my television, while not a widescreen set, can do anamorphic squeeze.

If you're not interested in the faux commentary tracks, I would basically go for whichever set matches your tv. The anamorphic discs on a non-anamorphic tv will look softer than the TR47 would, and most widescreen tvs won't blow up the non-anamorphic TR47 discs as clearly as the others.

That said, myself and many others I'm sure will just want to upgrade again if and when TR47 redoes the set on dual layer dvdrs. Higher quality LaserDisc Player, anamorphic picture, pcm sound, commentary, higher bitrates. [Insert Homer-esque drooling noise here].

Was TR47's set the one that splits each movie on two discs? I've got a standard 4x3 flatscreen TV (not flat panel). No idea about the anamorphic status of my set though. But if it's 4x3 I'm assuming that's not an issue, right?

TR47s are 1 complete movie per disc. Most likely, they will look and sound the best on your tv. The quality of the picture on the anamorphic set will depend on how good your dvd player is at doing the conversion to 4x3.

When you say that anamorphic converts it to 4x3, you mean that it stretches it, right? I can't stand that. I think I'll go for the non-anamorphic

No, it converts the image to a 4x3 level of resolution. It wont be stretched, nothing will be lost. Everytime you buy a commercial dvd that is widescreen and anamorphically enhanced, (examples: Matrix, Gladiator, Episode I , II) and watch it on a regular 4x3 tc, a conversion occurs. When you set your dvd player to 4x3 mode, you are telling the dvd player to convert the widescreen image to properly display. No cropping ar streching occurs. The player essentially removes lines, or resolution. But the bottom line is, the resolution is dumbed down. On most 4x3 tvs, the difference is barely noticable. When you watche a non-anamorphic dvd on a 4x3 tv, no conversion occurs, so there is no chance for problems in the image to occur. anamorphic is still the preffered format for all widescreen dvds, because it can be properly displayed on both 4x3 and 16x9 tvs.

Something else I discovered... the bad news...

Over the years, many errors have been noted about the various Laserdisc editions of the OT. Ive looked through both TR47s and the anamorphic set, and checked the known problems.

1. In episode 4, when the R2D2 is hacking the empires computer network, C3PO has the line "The tractor beam is coupled to the main reactor in seven locations. A power loss at one of the terminals will allow the ship to leave."

This line is absent on both DVD versions, and was also absent from both the 1993 definitive LD, and 1995 Faces LD.

2. Some pressings of The Definitve LD Empire Strikes Back... beginning of disc 2, side 3 is missing the first few seconds of Leia welding on the Falcon - this was corrected on later pressings of the box set.

3. TR47s DVD has this scene, the anamorphic dvds do not. Only about 3 seconds worth, nothing major, but this is a major problem in they eyes of some.

The side breaks are edited flawlessly on both sets of DVDs, except for 1 on TR47s set. Its the same side break that involves the Leia welding scene. On TR47s, there is about 3 seconds of black screen prior to The shot of Leia welding. Nothinng from the movie is missing, its just a pause between sides on the laserdisc.

Gotcha. Okay, I'm a novice to this, I admit. I usually just pop in a movie and watch it. I never think much about what happens behind the scenes.

Its not a matter of who did the better job, either one is simply created from what was available on the Laserdiscs they had.

That's too bad the Anamorphic DVD's are missing some of the welding footage. I know of that flaw. Thankfully, my LD's have that scene. I also know of the missing C3PO line. That line is missing on my LD's, but it doesn't concern me as it is not in many versions of the film. IIRC, that line is not in the original 1977 version of the film.

I just wish I knew what equipment and software the people used to make the Anamorphic set. I would like to see if I can match the quality on my own. It's a fun hobby.

Yes it would, especially considering the anaormorphic DVDs can be displayed correctly on a 4x3 TV, which I thought was not possible for a while, silly me.

So what the best way for someone in the UK to get hold of a set, I would like TR47's set really, but the other set would be okay too. I haven't really got a brilliant link to download them either and I'm happy to pay for a set, rather than watch my VHS edition and risk messing them up. Thanks Tony

you know, stuff like dust and specks on the laserdisc versions is a bit disturbing, as I don't remember any on my vhs version. Perhaps a good idea would be to make a dvd version of the widescreen vhs?

Patrick,

I think you're wrong. That line existed on the first versions of LD and VHS (as in the original movie). It was the only way for Ben (Obi-Wan) to know how to shut down the force field. The line was put back in the SE versions and, I believe, in the Faces LD and VHS (1997).

IMO, the best bootlegs have not been made yet. They would be anamorphic, on two discs (or one dual layer disc) and transfered from the Faces LD's. From memory, I think the Faces LD's are the same quality than the Definitive Collection LD's but are CLV instead of CAV and have less extras (if any). But Faces is not missing any lines of dialog or the welding scene in TESB.

lasysean,

A little off topic here, but what brand of television set do you have? Sony or JVC? I'm looking at a 27" set with the "widescreen" compression option and only Sony or JVC have that. From the reviews available on the Internet, JVC is cheaper and better quality since Sony builds its TV's in Mexico. If you get a chance, let me know!

No, actually Patrick was right...Though it was in the script, and probably recorded along with the rest of the movie, for whatever reason it got left out of the original theatrical prints. It was not in any released version of the film until (I think) the '81 re-release. It was also left out of the first couple vhs releases, and not included until (I think) the '84 tapes. Then it was overlooked again for the Definitive Collection Laserdiscs, and I think the next vhs set in that time period used the same transfer and skipped it again. But it's been included ever since.

So, I'm with Patrick. It certainly does add something to the logic of the movie, but it's been missing from so many different releases over the years that I'm fine with it missing from these sets as well. Maybe someday the ultimate bootleg version will take the trouble to seamlessly loop that in from some other source.

Mine's a Sony. I have to say, though, I'm torn on what to recommend. I'm very happy with my current Sony (36" flatscreen Wega), but the 27" I had before had all kinds of problems. Now, this set was from about 1997 or so, and I have no idea if they've changed their ways at all, but back then Sony had a reputation for lousy quality control on their lower end stuff. The bigger screens, the XBRs, the flatscreens etc were all fine, but the 27s and smaller all had the same arc-shaped picture distortion along the left side of the screen, poor solder joints that would cause anything from random flickering to dead input jacks to just plain not turning on, and who knows what other problems. And their service pretty much blows, but that's not really specific to Sony.

If your research says that kind of junk is still going on, I would definitely go with the JVC. IMHO the Trinitron picture is the best and most accurate picture around, but the tradeoff in reliability just isn't worth it.
