strangely hypnotic. just found myself staring at it longer than anticipated.

My parents sent me an English newspaper from the day after the World Cup and it just arrived yesterday. Reding the in-depth coverage (which was sadly lacking in the American papers) made me realise how much I miss having the tournament going on each day. Roll on 2010...

Talk about thread revival! Perhaps we'll still use it in 2010? As for myself, I've completely forgotten that the World Cup exists, and it shall remain so until december 2009.

Yeah I pretty much forgot about it too until I got the newspaper and then I noticed the void in my life. Then again, my life is rather empty at the moment so under normal circumstances I would probably be the same as you.

You have absolutely NO idea how much of an identical situation I am right now.

on the bright side, two more years until the olympics start. more football goodness for all.

European Championships are in 2008, the Copa America is soon (2007? - Ric?), the Olympic footy tournament is always worth a watch - but most importantly...

Liverpool FC have already played a couple of pre-season friendlies

And apparently Chelsea are playing a few games here in the States. Might try and catch one if they come to L.A.

Most of you won't understand how bizarre this is, but the new coach for the Brazillian team will be 1994's team captain Dunga. That's kinda like having Carrie Fisher directing a PT movie.

Do you think Dunga will do a good job for Brazil, Ric?

It seems strange that he has no coaching experience - though obviously knows a lot about the game fro his playing days at the very top level. I hope he does it - liked him as a player, and Brazil would do well to have a younger Dunga in the team bossing the midfield

Well, Zagallo was an ex-player and took over the role as coach for the 1970 World Cup, and we all know how it went (pretty well), but that was a whole different era, a whole different team, and Zagallo is somewhat of a genius. Dunga, on the other hand, is not. Apart from lacking football coaching experience and not being THE greatest strategic player Brazil has, he dosen't have much of a leadership skill, even though he was the captain in 1990, 1994 and 1998. Terrible, terrible choice, made purely by desperation, with no real thought put into it. Sadly Scolari shows no signs of coming back from Portugal - ever - so I guess that's pretty much what we'll have, mediocrity. A coach nicknamed Cuca would be the perfect choice for the role, or... oh well, what the heck, even ex-Barcelona's Luxemburgo, but I guess we'll have to take Dunga at least for an year.

I wish she would. Then again, it doesn't seem like she done too great a script on 'doctoring' the script for the Phantom Menace. Although maybe without her it would have been EVEN worse. Possibly even as bad as Attack of the Clones.

I personally like it when ex-players coach the national side. I've already stated my dislike of foreign coaches (eg a swiss guy coaching England) so when an actual national team player becomes the coach I like it a lot.

Should be interesting to see how he fares in the Copa America next year...

YIYF - would you really want McClaren as England manager - ahead of Scholari, who has won the thing already and done a great job with Portugal?

(it is indeed a sad reflection on the English coaches if all we can come up with is McClaren - especially the alleaged underhand way he secured the job...)

I would have liked to see what Hoddle did with the team, but he never got the chance.

Or how about someone else from the 1990 squad?

As a Spurs fan who looks back fondly on the Venables day, I'd have to agree with you there.

Now if Venalbes can just get rid of that idiot McClaren, we'll be in business...

Errm, they have the 'European cup Finals', that'll be in 2 years time...

Besides...USA, Brazil, Argentina, Japan....Not really part of the European Union....

;)

Oh, can you also please explain why your 'World Series handball football' is called that...isn't USA the only country that takes part??

No one can explain that.   It's called the Super Bowl.

Haha...Shows how much I know about the rugby with pads you play over there....

What's the World Series thing you have then? Is it baseball.?... My Point still stands tho!

Yep, baseball.

There are plenty of international players now, but your point is well made irregardless.  My guess would be that when the phrase was coined (late 1890's or early 1900's?), you could truly say that whatever team won the world series really was champion of the world, since no one else was playing baseball.
