I'm using Photoshop CS3 in OS X (Leopard) and every time I take a 28 KB, 395x360 GIF in to resize, I end up with a 80x72 JPEG that is inexplicably 64 KB.

How do I make something *smaller*, yet get a *larger* file size? I'm saving at "Baseline (standard)," level 6 (medium). All I want to do is get it down to the 5 KB limit and it just won't do it.

Any help on this?

Yeah, I had the exact same problem with my avatar, I was using CS2 in Windows.

Finally I gave up and did a quick google search and came across this,

http://www.shrinkpictures.com/

it will shrink them for you online, then you just right click and save the new file to your computer. Worked great for me. On step two click custom and enter "120" if you want it to come out 80x80. On step four I choose "good" quality and it came out under the 5kb limit.

I had the same issue with file size problems. I'm using PS 7 (I know, way old). If I did a plain "Save As" and then selected JPG, I couldn't get the file size anywhere near 5K without horrible quality. I ended up choosing "Save for Web". This brings up a separate window with options. I just dragged the quality slider to the left until it was under 5K. I was able to get good quality (as my avatar shows). The weird thing is that I was able to go with the equivalent of "high" quality using this method, the same level of quality of my first attempted and failed method. Hope this helps. Your mileage may vary.

It might also be a problem with PS saving an icon of the image. That takes up file space as well. If you have the "Save for Web" option give it a try.

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

When I was trying to do mine even with the "Save For Web" option it still kept ending up at 7kb.

Thanks for showing how to do this in photoshop! I was convinced my avatar was going to have to be a tiny, blurry piece of crap! I pointed to this thread in the "forum bugs" topic.

Thanks for that website C3PX. I didn't try that "Save for Web" option, I'll have to check that out later.

You can make your image exactly 80x80 if you use the Image>Canvas Size option and change the dimensions. In your case, you'd want to anchor the image at the bottom, and choose a white background. Otherwise, you can wait til Jay comes up with a way to center the avatars inside the blue.

I've tried it, but every time I try to reupload the 80x80, it reverts itself to the 80x72 inexplicably. I don't know why it's doing this. Bug, perhaps?

--edit--

I got it fixed now. Not sure what the deal was before, but it's good now.

Is (was) it something to do with unticking 'Constrain Proportions'? (the width and height are usually 'constrained' - in that you edit the height size and the width size is automatically changed for you?

No, that wasn't it - I had the 80x80 avatar all set, but everytime I uploaded it, it reverted to the 80x72 that I'd even deleted from my hard drive, which made NO sense whatsoever. But that's neither here nor there, as it works now.

Reduce your color palette. That will make a significant difference in file size. You don't need 256 colors for an avatar.
