An eccentric to be sure, but a great talent.

Over the years, Fischer gave occasional interviews with a radio station in the Philippines, often digressing into anti-Semitic rants and accusing American officials of hounding him.

He praised the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, saying America should be "wiped out," and described Jews as "thieving, lying bastards."

Eh, I say good riddance.

I just read up on some of his recent exploits. While I admire his chess, this guy was an a##hole of the first order...Geez, I'm sorry I posted this.

I was afraid to speak ill of the dead in public, but since someone else broke the ice, I'll say that I'm certainly not crying. The man was a spoiled brat who thought far too highly of himself just because he could beat the ass off of any chess player on Earth. If I had been alive in '72, the Cold War factor would have been the only thing keeping me from rooting for Spassky. I'm never happy to see someone die (with some notable exceptions), but I can't say I'm sad at Bobby's passing.

Top player -almost genius-like at chess before a time when computers and over-analysis rule all.

The man may have been paranoid, complicated, awkward and have some outlandish views - yet if it was true that his mother was a spy, and that the various US security agencies did indeed keep close tabs on Fischer himself it was no wonder that he railed against the US.

Sad that he's dead in that he brought a lot to the game - love playing his fischerandom chess - a welcome fun game when 'proper' matches get a bit heavy
