Hi! I hope I wrote this on the right board. Well it's April 2 and it's Alec Guinness's birthday!
Now to commemorate Alec in "Star Wars" let me ask a question...

it seems he didn't like Star Wars. Did he hate it that much?

Whether he liked Star Wars or not, he pulled the most convincing act out of all the actors.
Rest in peace, Mr. Guinness.

He liked the film and was constantly in defence of Lucas during its production. When it was released he said that he loved it and was very supportive of it, even agreeing to appear in the two sequels. However, it soon began to be blown out of preportion and rabid star wars fans get pestering him and being unable to see that he wasn't really a jedi master, just an actor playing one. Thus, he began to state how much fans annoyed him and what a burden the whole silly space movie was. Its a shame really because deep down he really did love the series but he became bitter from all the celebrity status placed on it.

The man was in so many other good movie that it must have have bugged the piss out of him that the only thing people would want to talk about was SW.

The man was an actor, not a movie star. He did not like the overzealousness of the fans.
There's good in the Original Trilogy, and it's worth fighting for.

i saw the great man once at Sadler's Wells theatre in London (mid-1990s - for the premiere of Matthew Bourne's 'Swan Lake') ~ i really wanted to go over to him & say "thank you" for all those magic Kenobi moments from Star Wars..... but i decided to just let him enjoy his evening in peace. i like to think Yoda would be proud

Yeah, I'd say that they sure don't them like Mr. Guinness anymore, guys who were truly dedicated to the actual art of acting and not just the fame and fortunes. If they do exist today, they rarly venture out of the theaters in which they act. I'd have to say that Guinness' character is the main reason I love Star Wars, I just cannot get enough of his Obi-Wan and I was quite pleased with Ewen McGregor's take of it. Guinness' portrayal of the wise, noble, elder Jedi master was much like his actual life, the wise, noble, and elder actor. I do miss him although I never knew him.

His acting in the scene in his little hut of a house on Tatooine, is without question the best acting in the entire SW saga. With the most subtle expressions, he conveys emotions far deeper than all the screaming in the PT. The scene turned out to be so powerful (thanks to Guiness' powerfully understated acting), that Lucas should have seized upon it and built the entire saga around what Obi-Wan said in that hut, instead of spending the next 5 movies trying to explain it away. Guiness single-handedly turned SW from a fun flick into a real movie, and not only the best of the trilogy, but among the best of all time.
