Lord Of The Rings Limited Edition DVDs

Did any of you guys or girls buy this set? I didn't know they actually released movies on a dvd18.

These sets will be available in europe in a month or so. I'm thinking about letting my other extended edition sets go and buy these new ones. I always liked the part of the theatrical version in fellowship where frodo sits under the tree and hears Gandalf singing when he arrives. That scene is worse in the extended edition with different music and without the title. So for that it would be nice to have both the theatrical and extended edition on 1 disc.

Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

I wasn't going to buy these but from everything I've read about the documentaries on the second disc in each set.... I'm hooked! There have been some clips of these docus posted online already and it seems worth the price.

I wouldn't sell my regular and extended sets though... but maybe that's just me.

Is the only difference between this set and the regular and Extended editions the documentaries? If so, then I'll probably pass. If I get interested in the documentaries, I'll rent them via netflix to see them.

Netflix doesn't have them I have already checked.

As much as I enjoy watching the LOTR trilogy I don't think I'd buy another set - as Number 20 said - it's only the documentaries that are different from the other previous sets.

Is there a quality difference?

THey fit the entire extended edition and the theatrical edition onto one DVD? Does a DVD-18 offer that much more space than a DVD-9 (or whatever kind they used for the original ones?)

I won't bother buying it if it's of lesser quality.

a DVD-18 is a flipper

Arggg

but I really want this set =].

Word is that the video quality on these isn't quite as good as the separate theatrical and extended editions.

DVD-18's are basically two DVD-9's glued back to back. They're a pain in the ass to handle (no label) and their reliability has been questionable.

I got FOTR today and the packaging is cheap, but the documentary is a great insight into the movie. Unlike the EE docs which made the crew look like one happy family, this doc shows arguments and tantrems. It shows that these movies were a struggle and one that paid off. These docs are completely different from the EE docs.

I'm also assuming that they don't have the DTS 6.1 discreet audio on them, like the EE. That sounds great. As I said before, it doesn't seem like they have enough to get me to buy another copy of this film, especially since I already have the theatrical DVDs and the EE.

Haven't there been enough Lord of the Ring DVDs? I enjoyed the movies well enough, but this is too much.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Except that it's better to have 2 DVD-9's, IMHO. There are also "DVD-14's" which are DVD 9 one side and 5 the other (I think terminator R1 is an example).

Mr. Sylvester, you're an LOTR fan? Wow. Anyways, I don't know. I love the fact that Jackson is so willing to give fans what they want, but apart from the new docs, I'm not sure. The theatrical and EE discs that I have are just phenomenal as it is, and I'm not sure that I want to sepend the money. Still thanks to Jackson for the offer of both versions. Taken from high quality sources. In anamorphic widescreen. With multiple audio tracks.

Yeah, the quality won't be nearly as good. Stick with the EE set.

What I did was take Disc 2 out of my theatrical set, put it in a disc sleeve and put it in the flap of the EE, and sell the theatricals. I really want to do that with the limited editions too (I'm a sucker for bonus features, especially when they're my all time fav. films) but I don't have the money to get a whole new set with.

But for anyone who hasn't gotten the films yet, skip the limited editions and get the 4-disc extended editions set. I got eavh one of them the day they came out and still haven't made it through the bonus material. They're a great deal, definately the best bonus discs I've ever seen. I love all the stuff they have about Tolkein on them too.

But I definately want to see the new documentaries; maybe someone is selling disc two on eBay.

Before they had released just the right amount of Lord of the Rings sets without over doing it, now they seem to be taking Lucas's example and going a little too far. Since it contains new material, it isn't aimed at the people who don't own the movie, it is aimed at the same crowd who already paid for the Extendent Editions. Honestly, this DVD thing is getting out of hand. Wish they would release just the documentaries, that is what every one wants anyway, but since it contains the movie they can charge more for it and make more money off it. I also like how they made the 2-disc extended edition in the cheapest way possible to produce, by making it one DVD 18 instead of using the same ones that were the original EE. I foresee LFL quality becoming the industry standard, not quite there yet, but we're on our way.

yeah.... I call those "rip-me-off DVDs"...

but I will rent them to see the bonus material... edited JUST the way I like it... no music, no "we were big friends" crap, and no interviews... just footage... and that's the REAL making-of.... just that 1 hour and 47 minutes is too short.

I'd prefer 4 hours each documentary... but that's just my wishful thinking...
