Yeah, I realised that later today - there's also the graphic novel based on the series...

I wonder why they didn't keep the Batman Beyond name on the other side of the pond. Batman of the Future just sounds... kinda like a '50s B-movie. Or a '50s Batman comic.

Yeah, I've always wondered that myself. Any Englanders/Autralians out there, you all got jipped on that name.

I just read a bit about The Return of the Joker movie on Wikipedia. It sounds so good that I wish I'd actually bothered to be interested in Batman Beyond. All that censorship sucks, though.

No idea why they changed it over here. It's normally America that gets the dumbed-down sorceror's stone titles, so this is a mystery to me.

Bleh, Sorceror's Stone. I hate that. I never call it that.

But it's always made me wonder. Did the movie have two separate takes whenever the stone was mentioned, and Sorceror's Stone was used in U.S. and Philosopher's Stone in the U.K., or was it Sorceror's Stone in both countries for the movie?

Kinda like a BTTF Jerk/Asshole deal? Hmm, good question that. I haven't seen the film for ages and don't remember noticing... Guess I won't find out for a while either. Anyone in the UK care to help?

Another one was Fried Green Tomatoes. In England it was called Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistlestop Cafe, which is a bit more of a mouthful and presumably would stop Americans watching the movie? Baffling.

Formula 51 was called 'The 51st State' in England, suggesting that the UK is basically an extension of the USA. Not sure why an English person would get that but the filmmakers didn't think and American would.

There are more but I can't think right now. I'm not just talking about films with different names in different countries - I'm talking about films that have been dumbed down for the American market. Which is funny since most of the movies are actually American...

I want to agree with you about lengthy titles not appealing to the American market, but you can't forget crap like "Star Wars Episode N: Blahbity Blah Blah" or "Lord of the Rings: The Whichever Title We're On Now". I mean, I consider that an example of the dumbing down of the American market as well, where you have to include as many references to the series as humanly possible in order to draw a crowd.

Yeah, that's a good point... There seems to be no method to the name-changing madness.

And to think there's some guy with a ponytail getting paid to say 'that name is OK for Europe but not the US'.

Boggles the mind. Just think of a single good title that suits both markets and use it. And if you're adapting from a book, use the book's title.

Or just not worry so much about the title. Or have faith in it. Why different countries need different titles is just silly when you get right down to it.

Unless it's something that translates horribly into another language.

But yeah, in English speaking countries, I agree.

Gaffer: Return of the Joker is a great movie. I found the uncut version at Sam Goody for $16, so it shouldn't be that hard to find or that expensive if you know where to look. You really don't need to know anything about Batman Beyond but the basic premise to enjoy it, either.

And if all else fails, you could always try to find it on the internet, with legal or non-legal methods.

Separate takes for all the Philosopher's Stone lines. You can actually buy Philosophers Stone on NTSC DVD from Canada. Or PAL in the UK.

Nope. The title of the book was HP and the Philosopher's Stone'. Apparently the studio didn't think American's would know what a philosopher was, and, y'know the movie's about wizards and sorcerors and shit, so better get that in the title somewhere for people who have been living on Mars and haven't heard of Harry Potter.

That's so retarded, given how many conservative Christians were opposed to Harry Potter already - oh, I know, why don't we flesh out the whole occult aspect of it? THAT'll draw out the American crowds!

True, they do have Halloween, but...you know what I mean.

That never stopped the books from being #1 and JK from being the Richest Woman in the U.K.

That was more Scholastic, actually, in bringing over the book. The movie just cashed in on the popularity of the title.

Hot-damn, I hate Harry Potter, and now we've let him hijack the Batman thread! Somebody change the topic please!

Ah, screw it, I'll do it...

Has anyone read Knightfall? Or at least Part One of it? I did this week, and I have to say, the quality of it is pretty sketchy in writing and artwork save for the last two stories...

Will Katie Holmes nipples be starring along side her in the new Batman film?

and is it true they get their own trailer and paycheque?

I enjoyed the Knightfall series--all three volumes. It was certainly different than modern Batman comics, but it has a strange energy that the current Morrison and Dini stories lack.

By Knightfall do you mean the Bane/broken back stuff? If so I read it when it was the current comic storyline. Good stuff.

I also have a BBC radio drama version of it (but it's on cassette so if anyone wants to hear it you'll have to track it down online and download it... and if you do let me know because I'd like to listen to it again).
