The first two X-Men films lacked the right ensemble feeling.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Best superhero movies ever? I'll go along with Zion on Superman: The Movie and Spiderman 2, but I'd also pick X2 (rather than BB).

Best superhero movies ever: Batman, Batman Returns, Superman, Batman Begins, and Unbreakable (and Sin City if you count it). The X-movies don't even rank there for me.

Alas, if only the greatest superhero of all time had a movie made about him, then all would be right with the universe.

Who's that, you ask? Who's the greatest superhero of all time? Who's the guy that causes every villain in the known universe to shit his/her pants? Why, The Tick, of course!

Don't fret, Jenny. We have dozens of those at the store I work at. Well... maybe you should fret some since I doubt there's any way you can get one. But if Mississippi has them, then surely you can find some place that has them.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

They need to start makign Superhero films about some of the more interesting B-Listers. Why don't Guy Gardner or Nightwing--or even Tim Drake--get their own film?

DC (and I'm sure Marvel as well) has so many great characters that aren't as popular as the big names. (The fact that Ghost Rider is getting a film is a step in the right direction. I just hope it doesn't suck.)

Just a little informal poll, but I'm curious about how old those of you who "loved" Superman Returns (or even thought it was good) are? It's not a loaded question, it's a straight one. What was the first movie you saw in a theater?

I'm in the category of those who thought it was good, but not great. But I also go into any superhero flick not expecting Shakespeare (and get pleased when a film like Batman Begins completely delivers beyond my wildest expectations). My first movie was Star Wars in 1978, followed by Watership Down, and then Superman: The Movie, in that order.

Why do you ask? I'm going to go way out on a limb here and guess that you disliked Superman Returns rather intensely. Just out of curiosity, what are some of your favorite movies?

Aw, rabbits. How cute. And they're tearing each other's throats out. Adorable.

My dad rented Watership down when I was like 10. I watched it and was all like, "Damn! That movie had more blood in it than Jurassic Park!" I was an avid fan of JP.

And to answer mverta's question. I'm in the catagory that loved SR and I'm 23 years old. The first movie that I saw in the theater...I don't know. I've been going to movies for as along as I can remember.

And I know I must be from a totally different generation from those that loved Superman I and II because I just got done watching II and found myself amused but not all that thrilled with it. At one point I remember letting out a loud sigh during the scene where the 3 bad guys are blowing wind all over the streets. "Yes, I get it. Those guys can blow. Oh look, someone lost their wig. Oh and look some doofis is on rollerskates going backwards against the wind. Har har har. Can we please move on to the next scene please?"

I'm not saying Sups II was bad (I was laughing outloud at many parts) but it was too campy and kiddy for me. SR didn't have any of those Pee-Wee Herman elements and I liked it that way.

Oh and my superhero movies are (in no particular order): The X-Men Trilogy, Spiderman 1, Batman Begins, Superman Returns, and the Powerpuff Girl movie.

Does Howard the Duck count as a b-list comic book character? LOL

Seriously...
I'm guessing that the only people who get "comic book" movies are the a-listers. Its not that the b-listers can't get a movie, its just that they don't usually get promoted as a comic book movie, like Blade was based on a comic book, but not promoted as such. Even Sin City didn't really talk about being based on a comic book. When they are, people don't see them. I don't think that the average movie goer wants to see a "comic book" movie of someone they aren't familiar with. So you are left with the fans of the comic book, and they aren't enough of them to make a movie a success.

Yes, but that is also the charm of the original two Superman films. They are very tongue-in-cheek. Superman is such a difficult character to work with. It really takes a writer like Alan Moore or someone like that to make him interesting. He is so powerful that, outside of kryptonite and red sunlight, not much damages him. It runs the risk of making him seem boring. Superman Returns was an attempt to do what was done with Batman Begins and give Superman a richer character in film. It was an attempt to make something age old feel fresh again, and to replace the Americana vibe of the original film with something much more interesting. I simply don't think that it entirely succeeded. It has a lot of great ideas in it, but I don't think that it entirely comes to fruitation. There is a phenomenal movie somewhere in Superman Returns, but the movie itself felt good but not great to me. Really, Superman needs a villian to match his powers, and as evil as Lex is (and as much fun as Spacey has in the role), he can't have a big showdown with him. Most of the film's problems seemed to me to come from overreaching. It didn't succeed, but it wasn't from lack of trying.

The first two X-Men films lacked the right ensemble feeling.

Yes, but Ratner's third film kind of gave the ensamble a Power Rangers feeling, which I didn't care for as much. The problem with X-Men is that there are so many characters that it is impossible to focus upon them all in the confines of 2 hours. Instead of focusing on them as a whole, Singers film attempted to individualize each of the X-Men, to varying degrees of success. I really wish that Singer has stayed to complete the trilogy.

Jenny, all that campy crap from SII is going to be gone come this fall. Richard Donner's cut (as Michael Thau would assemble it) is going to finally see the light of day. It's all but certain that the rather stupid elements of the film will be gone. Meanwhile, Lois will shoot Clark, Brando will be back, the Fortress will be destroyed, and Miss Tessmacher will find the toilet.

The thing I don't get with this Donner cut is this- If they sacked Donner 3/4 after making the film, how can they finish a film off that's not complete? They hired Lester to finish Supes2 off, so this Donner cut must still have parts of what Lester filmed. Right?

I don't explain myself too well, but you get what I mean.

And pissing SR still hasn't opened in the uK yet!! Friday can't come too soon. I'm just dying to see this film!!

The new Donner cut will use some Lester footage, I believe. Tit for tat. HotRod, keep your expectations low and you'll enjoy SR in parts.

I don't know about that. How about James Cameron? I take it that you're none too fond of Singer?

The campyness is part of the film's charm. The first was certainly very campy.

As I said, X2 is one of the best Superhero movies ever (possibly the best), so no problem with Singer per se (I also liked The Usual Suspects). I actually liked the approach he took on SR, he just didn't succeed in what he was trying to do, and I think he would have done a better job of X3 than Ratner.

I agree wholeheartedly. SR was a great idea that did not come to fruitation. Who is Keiser Soze? Thanks for you input. Understand, I meant not offense. I apologize.

I was excited when I heard about that release but after reading several HORRID reviews of it I decided to spend my money elsewhere. That bad, hunh?

I watched Braniac Attacks, I actually have the DVD, and I honestly didn't think it was that bad. When I read a lot of customer reviews on like Amazon.com the biggest complaint was mainly that the voices of Lex Luthor & Braniac were different from The Animated Series. I thought that the storyline was good and all. The way Lex Luthor acted though was kind of like, I don't see Luthor actually acting like that. Just my two cents, I know there are people that don't like it for better reasons then two voices being changed.
