Why did you get rid of a region-free player? And why wouldn't you want to buy one ever again?

I'm in HD-land now. No more SD DVD for me. With my HD player, DVD recorder, receiver, LD player and SVHS, there's no way in hell I'm keeping one player for a few PAL discs.

I will be trying to put together one with all extras.

I bought a 40 dollar rca player that turned out to be region free and I love it. I've been able to watch so many discs that I wouldn't have been able to, including Building Empire. It's been well worth it for me.

Good for you, then. I'm selling my Malata. Let me know if anyone is interested. I paid a helluva lot more than $40. Btw...you get what you pay for re: quality.

DF, so you forked out for one of the new HD players eh? That must have cost you a pretty penny. Which did you get? HD-DVD or Blue Ray? You worried one might go the way of Betamax? I'd love to be there with you, but until Star Wars is out on HD I won't be getting one anytime soon. The Fifth Element though makes me salvinate a bit though since I've heard that will be one of the first movies put out on HD.

Being a lurker over at DVDTalk, I can tell you he bought an HD DVD Player, although it would be very tricky of him to pick up a Blu-Ray (no 'e') player, as they've been delayed until August / September.

Back on Topic, I gave a copy of this and deleted magic to a mate of mine who absolutely loved it - one of his mates overheard us and I've promised him copies as well!

Excellent Job Jambe!

HD DVD obviously. Nope. I got it cheap. Had a ton of gift certificates and whatknot. My total cost was just over $200.

I had forgotten that Blue Ray got pushed back. Thanks for remind me. Anyhow, $200 for an HD-DVD player?? I think that would tempt even me.

Several Wal-Marts are selling them for around $400-450.

I have zero interest in Blu-Ray. It's not really pushed back any more than they've already been mentioning. The Samsung player still comes out next week along with the first batch of discs.

Another sort-out of stuff sourrounding my computer has left me with 3 spare copies of Jambe's excellent 'Building Empire' on dvd.

I'll send out a copy each to first 3 people (preferably from Europe - it'll keep the psotage costs down) who PM me...

*** apologies - my PM box was nearly full (doh!) and so have only received a PM off 'lybertyboy' - anyone still wanting a copy please PM me, cheers. ***

I'll help.

Isn't Irvin Kershner a great commentator? He's just fun to listen to. I really enjoyed the quotes selected for this release. One that really cracked me up was the "creepy robot arm" remark from the end of the movie.

Some other quotes (from Wikipedia):

"Of all the younger guys around, all the hot-shots, why me? I remember he said, 'Well, because you know everything a Hollywood director is supposed to know, but you're not Hollywood.' I liked that." - explaining why George Lucas chose him to direct The Empire Strikes Back.

"I like to fill up the frame with the [characters'] faces. There's nothing more interesting than the landscape of the human face."

Here's a random question, but is Irvin Kershner Jewish?

Also, it seems like it gets overlooked a lot, but Leia kisses Luke at the end of ESB, in his bed on the Falcon. Why doesn't anyone make a big deal of that, like they do the kiss on Hoth?

I have always enjoyed Kershners commentary. He is very matter of fact, and doesn't get bogged down in theory too much. And I have always assumed that he is Jewish yes.

As for the Luke/Leia kiss on the Falcon, it's more affectionate and less passionate (like the cut one) or deliberate (like the one in the medical room on Hoth). I decided not to really talk about the Luke/Leia kisses in 'Building Empire' as I felt that it has been covered to the point of cliche. The Easter Egg shows what I believe to be Lucas demostrating that he hadn't written the sibling relationship into the story as early as you might think.

Where is that easter egg? Could you pm me to let me know? I have looked all around for it, but didn't want to just track it down in the VOB's.

I don't know why they make a big deal over the kiss on Hoth, even. It's obvious that it's to get Han's goat and not romantic. She barely says 2 words to Luke in the first two movies. Any hint at a love triangle is on the cutting room floor. I think it's all wishful thinking from when we were kids that was turned on its ear. Watching it as an adult it's fairly obvious they were telegraphing Han with Leia from the first "meet cute."

Anyway, can someone send me how to get to the easter egg, too? It's driving me nuts trying to find it through the menus. I should be working on my version of the NTSC BE this weekend.

Re: my offer of 3 copies of Building Empire to the 1st 3 people who PM'd me...

1 copy gone to 'lybertyboy'
1 copy gone to 'Tons O' Fun'
1 copy gone to 'netsolo'

that's it - all gone...

Out of interest, has anyone transcoded my beloved project to NTSC yet?

oojason- thanks for the send! IT'S FANTASTIC!

Jambe, I might be able to help. Being in the states, I watched it on my region-free player. But I've converted a couple PAL discs to NTSC discs with minimal artifacting. I can give it a shot?

Thanks mate, that would be cool. I simply don't have the time to do it myself at the moment.

Lots of people said they were going to attempt it. No results as of yet. You could be the first!

Interestingly I did just find a post on another forum about a guy who has ripped 'Building Empire' to Xvid. Unfortunately the links to the two files don't seem to work.

Ok, I have started to transcode the 'Building Empire' DVD to four Xvid parts. The first two are 300MB each. Any advice where to upload them?
