From what I've seen, the Special Collection LD's are the closest in color to the actual film. The only problem with them is that they are a little too blue/green overall, as the film's age was starting to show at the time of the telecine. Still, I'd say that the original color was more blue/purple than red/orange. Whether that's a "deliberate creative decision" or not, who knows.

Since this is the most prestigious and ambitious project undertaken by anyone here on OT, here's where I want to ask the question.

Now that the originals WILL be released on video--is this gonna impact the projects momentum?

Having been a SW fan since 1977, the only surprise in the news of the release of the OOT was in how fast it came. Look, this trick is an old one for Lucas: "make them drool, THEN give them what they want." He's the master at it.

An appeal to the XO team:

Please guys, do NOT stop your excellent work. Lord only knows what will be on those DVDs in September. Could be nothing more than half-arsed "re-insert the original scenes" on top of the 2004 films. Look at the shoddy audio mixing and rotoscoping done to the 2004 "definitive-original vision-this is it" versions. Only in Sept. will we know what we're getting.

In the meantime, perhaps those who have slaved so very hard over the various fan restorations should get together a list of stuff Lucasfilm needs to look at for their own OOT restoration. And please don't forget the damned green lightsaber on the Falcon

Until we see what we're getting, it would be silly to throw out everything that has been done. There's no mention of the mono mix in the official announcement for example...
Funny thing is, that darn lightsaber does look greenish on super-8.

"Now that the originals WILL be released on video--is this gonna impact the projects momentum?"

All depends. This sounds great, but the QC on this DVD release had better be better than that of the previous release - in both video and audio.

This could truly be the greatest release ever seen - and yet there are a thousand ways it could be screwed up. I'm hopeful, but wary.

Besides, there's still a lot to be said about finishing the best possible LD transfer ever attempted. I think it's safe to say that, had people not shown so much interest and tireless effort in creating such a version, LFL might never have gotten around to this.

I think OCPMovie has been drinking tonight.

Anyway. I'm already seeing the future of preservations. HD upmixes. Frame by frame cleanup by the X0 crew, reinstitution of original poor sfx, removing of original poor sfx, mono tracks, 5.1 tracks, color correction, PAL conversions...

We're not using LD's anymore but I don't see any of us leaving well enough alone, we're a bit too crazy for that. We're just taking it to the next level now!

Why are you being such an ass, ocpmovie?

I think it's pretty disrespectful to be dissing the X0 Project so loudly and at such length. What did they ever do to you? I'm actually sort of surprised that you, a fellow perfectionist preservationist, are the first one to be (building and then) jumping on the 'X0 Project got owned' bandwagon. WTF is that all about? Your projects aren't the same, so it's not like there's some sort of huge pissing contest. Is there? (What did I miss?)

Sure hope it's the liquor talking. 'Cause at the moment you appear to be in the distinct minority, with your one-person LOL-fest.

I think it's a time to rejoice really when we don't have to rely on Star Wars laserdiscs anymore. This being the last of the projects, and one which was taking its sweet time despite a disproportionate level of hype, I thought I'd register a quick LOL here.

Laserdisc era, over. Work from DVD sourced material, folks. You're gonna have an official Lucasfilm release to fix.

I always thought the vanguard of preservation was people doing what Legacy was doing cleaning up the nice clear official DVDs, rather than obsessively cleaning up frames on a dead format, which we already had in much better quality.

Color correction, etc.

I would be glad to see those involved here put their talents to work looking at DVD sources.

Or working on other films that are only on laserdisc, the very few that still exist.

End of an era. I mark it with LOL. Deal.

I wonder how that guy feels actually. I don't recall his username, but the guy who was doing the "Legacy Edition" that ocp mentioned. From his website I gathered that he has spent quite a bit of time already fixing up the botchy FX in the SEs (as ocp described). If you're on here, will you keep working on the "Legacy Edition"? I am merely curious.

Mike Verta? Yeah, that's a good question actually. He's been sorta busy professionally, from what I understand, so I don't know if he's progressed all THAT far. But it was proprietary stuff he was using, so I hope it's not much of a monetary loss. Besides, he might simply use this new transfer to continue his work--like OCP said, DVD remixing is essentially the new frontier for the editors here. I don't imagine it'll be any different with Mike.

The official release sounds so half assed

This release will only be available for a limited time: from September 12th to December 31st. International release will follow on or about the same day. Each original theatrical version will feature Dolby 2.0 Surround sound, close-captioning, and subtitles in English, French and Spanish for their U.S. release. International sound and subtitling vary by territory.

I'm looking forward to the lpcm from ld which my reciever can use dts neo 6 on, whereas with a dolby stereo track I can only get pro logic which sounds crappy (Denon 3801)

With all the resources at LFL you would have expected them to put more effort into it, time will tell I suppose....

That's stupid, then it just becomes a fan edit NOT a fan restoration

As said before, I hope that the XO project doesn't just close down. Maybe it needs to go off in a different direction, though.
I'm happy about the O-OT coming out on DVD, but from the sounds of it, Lucas is doing his own transfer from Laserdiscs, even if it is the masters. After seeing how things went for the '04 DVDs, Lucasfilm is good at messing things up, such as-will Luke's lightsaber be the right color on the falcon, etc. Also, will they do anything for it as far as cleaning it up, or will it just be a straight transfer from LD, which, as others have said, usually doesn't produce great results, especially if this is just some slopply-done rush job to have yet another release. This may be the best thing we've seen, or it could be something that isn't even as good as some of the fan preservations.
Also, I would love to see a release with some of the different sound mixes on it, such as:
Star Wars:
Dolby Surround
Mono Mix
ESB:
35mm
70mm
I don't remember off the top of my head if ROTJ had any differences in the various sound mixes.

ahem....see Lancer Project for multiple sound mixes.

once I get the final glitches int he 5.1 track fixed.

I know I been quiet recently but RL has intruded lately.

Seems a fair few people are expecting LFL to get this release 'right' - personally I'd trust the lads doing the X0 Project over another cash grab from the seemingly inept LFL anyday.

Hope the X0 Project continues as it is...

Agreed. As joyous as it is that Lucasfilm has "caved" and will give us what we want, it's highly unlikely that it will satisfy what we really want. Personally, I know that the X0 Project fulfilled all my wildest dreams of an Original, Original Trilogy - and surpassed them. I can only hope they continue in their quest to create the ultimate OOT, as it's incredibly likely that Lucas will fail us again - as he has done countless times.

Forgive us for having lives.

As I said before, I'm not deleting my master files any time soon. Anyone who thinks this DVD release will be the end-all-be-all apparently has a short memory in regards to the mastering disaster that is the '04 release - in terms of audio and video - when taking into account LFL's monetary and technical resources. We'll see if lessons were learned or not.

If anybody remembers the Chicago Tribune article, I think one of the persons involved said even if Lucas suddenly announced the release of the originals, he would finish it just to see how it measured up. I have a feeling this project and most definitely this site may have been decisive in getting the originals released because Lucas doesn't want to lose money from fans that he could get.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77
