When it comes to the original trio not being together for one moment? It sucks but sometimes that happens in storytelling. JJ was honestly right to tell Mark that. It’s not Luke’s story anymore, this is not about the original characters

What does having the original trio together have to do with it not being Luke’s story?

Well truthfully, it has nothing to do with that aspect but what JJ was conveying to Mark Hamill is that for the sequel trilogy, the focus isn’t really on the main trio anymore. Mark Hamill has consistently been on this thing of lamenting that he never got a chance to be with Harrison, Carrie and Billy Dee again which is fine but what one comes to understand is that a story is not going to always cater to your personal desires but rather what a storyteller is looking to do.

But I don’t think that has to account for them not having any scenes together. The issue, I’d argue, is that I think there is no strong story or character reasoning for Luke to not be in the movie and to not have any scenes with Leia and Han.

Except there is. He’s on a planet after having mysteriously vanished and all anyone knows is that he’s likely gone to the first Jedi Temple. That’s the whole nature of the story so we can’t really have these guys together.

That’s what I’d refer to as a device, not a reason. I think Luke having gone missing and the search for Luke is negated by the movie’s own story in having the focus of it discarded as a narrative drive by the time the third act comes, making the focus more about starkiller base. I think none of the protagonists in the movie gains much of anything by Luke having gone missing.

They sidelined Luke to focus on Rey when Luke originally was going to be in episode 7. Michael Arndt screenplay issues lead to JJ very obvious decision to just use Luke as a worthless MacGuffin.

Because if you put Luke in the movie the audience is going to focus on him and want him driving the action, want him as the lead character.

The decision to make a sequel trilogy and use Luke, Han and Leia as cameos and almost not characters. Diminished from where we left off with them in the OT, no progression in their characters. Han Solo not only goes back to being a smuggler but a failed smuggler and BS artist. Leia is a mere military general. Luke is well, I have no idea what he is because he shows up just to be killed off. To tell us how the prequel Jedi were failures in every way. To tell the audience you expect me to be a hero and I can’t be that, as he tells Rey.

I’m not going to face the entire first order with a laser sword. Then he kind of does or he fakes it through Astral projection.

Rebuild the Jedi Order pass on what you have learned. Fail. A total betrayal of what Return of the Jedi sets up. And even worse when you realize the sequel was just redoing the OT story all over again, Jedi Vs Sith and Rebels VS Empire, and ROS ends in the same place as ROTJ. Luke’s role has been assumed by Rey. She even has taken his last name.

Leia’s mission to restore democracy and the Republic. You never even see or hear of the new republic in the Disney trilogy. Other than in Hux speech. You never hear about what happened to the Empire, somehow the Empire became the first order, or the Imperial remnant is separate, they don’t elaborate at all. Somehow despite the rebellion taking over the seat of government, replacing the Empire as the leading power in the Galaxy. There is a new rebellion and resistance. Somehow the first order has the resources to build a weapon bigger than the death star. Right under the new republics nose. None of it makes sense.

If they wanted to deconstruct and rebuild Star Wars, and move the story in a new direction they didn’t do so with a safe and completely on the rails, phoned in episode 9. Now what can they do with a future Rey movie, to make what they did at all worthwhile. You can’t just keep retconning. You can’t undo the sequel or make it not canon to Star Wars, now that its locked in.

I have my own qualms with different storytelling decisions that were made in the sequels (I think everyone has at least a few), but I think the biggest thing that soured me on them after the first watch was how meta everything felt. It got hard to get lost in the classic Star Wars worldbuilding because the narrative seemed to keep wanting to tell a story about Star Wars instead of a Star Wars story.

You mean like how Rey knows of Luke like he was bedtime story. The myth within the myth. She grew up on Jakku cosplaying as a rebel.

Living as a scavenger barely above being Unkar Plutt’s slave.

Kind of like little Anakin or Luke, Living in a desert dreaming. She dreams of a bigger life for herself and one of importance, and finding her family and Beach Ball 8 just magically happens upon her.

She gets caught up in the battle between the resistance and the first order, that is a redo of rebellion vs Empire.

Her path to be a Jedi and to be a Skywalker that doesn’t just mirror Lukes path it is Luke’s path.

She goes from wanting to avenge the death of Han Solo to wanting to bring back Ben Solo from the dark side within Kylo Ren, thinking Luke saved Anakin from within Darth Vader.

And the movies say she was right and Luke was wrong.

Another interesting aspect was Han was like the Ben Kenobi to Rey in the Force Awakens and he believed in the force, Luke gave up on the force, he literally became a person willing to burn his religion to ground and destroy all evidence of its and its original texts. Luke is bitter when Rey finds him.

Yeah the state of the galaxy after RotJ really isn’t conducive of the reboot energy they were going for. Too much storytelling has to happen offscreen. The basic premise of “evil Empire defeated the good guys and makes life miserable” requires a lot less buy-in than the whiplash of seeing characters end in one place only to end up in a radically different place with little exploration of the how or why. The meta of recreating Star Wars rather than expanding it also felt present in the sets/props/creature designs that feel “just off” enough to avoid trademark infringement, as though they didn’t have the rights.

And this is why I find it annoying to see people try to argue that it’s treatment of Snoke is the same as Palpatine from the OT and is thus appropriate. Especially when it’s said by someone involved in the production. I think I actually saw Rian Johnson use that defense once. My goodness. Like, bro, you know that you’re a sequel and not a remake or original work, right? What? You think you can just stand on someone elses shoulders and pretend you can do the same thing as they can? First of all, there wasn’t anything before the OT when it started, so it was an original work and there was no contrast of how things were before versus how they are now I think. Second of all, okay, Rian, so, when are you gonna be giving us a series of prequels depicting the rise of Snoke as leader of the first order?

All of this on top of, I think, Rian Johnson’s poor writing in that Snoke being killed by Kylo serves nothing of value for anyone. Palpatine dying was a conclusive trilogy moment in the narrative that cemented the defeat of the empire and showcased a turn for Vader away from villainy and a moment of refusal to turn from Luke. I think Snoke’s death doesn’t really mean anything for anyone except Kylo. And even then, Kylo I think only moves up a position, as a character I think he’s not only not distinct as a character from Snoke for there to be any real point to him taking over, he has nothing to offer by TLJ’s ending as a villain to any of the main characters of the ST, I think, and as a villain I think he’s simply weak as a character and a villain.

I didn’t care about Snoke’s death because he was a nothing character in the first place. Another JJ Abrams mystery box.
He wasn’t even a Sith.

Who was he, what was he. You barely get even a hint in the films themselves and even the outside material can be contradictory in places. Why should exposition be outside the films in novels and comics. They want people to do homework to fix their garbage script.

And, as far as I think the movies gave, Kylo was still not much more of a character than him. At least, to me, Snoke had gravitas. So, killing Snoke I think had no point, because Kylo doesn’t have much more to offer and I think basically has no discernible wants or goals that I think distinctify him from Snoke. So, now we’re just left with black hole of a character, to me, Kylo Ren, whose sucking up all the credibility of the OT characters and whose focus, in TLJ mostly, is being used to relegate Rey, the main character I think, into a cheap and sexist, to me, bad boy good girl romance.

After finishing Andor I decided to finally watch Star Wars in extended machete order. Rogue One, 4, 5, 1,2,3,6,7, Solo,8,9. I’m going to say something very controversial here but I conclude, despite the many, many flaws they have, the sequel trilogy are better films than the prequels. The performances are more compelling and vulnerable, the world feels more tangible, they feel more like Star Wars. Indeed Rogue One and Solo are the best two Star Wars films since The Empire Strikes Back (still the high point of the film series). When I am long gone and but a whisper on the breeze, young people will find The Star Wars for the first time and it will be just one slightly wonky and whimsical tale The fan conflicts of old will be forgotten… Andor is still the best thing though.😉

How does that make them better movies and not movies with some things done stronger in them?

As an example, reylo alone, I think is worse written character wise than anything in the PT.

Dooku is just as badly written but he lives in a half cartoon world with clunky dialogue directed blankly. I don’t care about him. At times I genuinely care about Kylo Ben. He delivers clunky dialogue with conviction in a world that seems more tangible.

I do like Dooku because its freakin Christopher Lee not because of the awful dialogue, I mean come on its A hammer horror legend like Peter Cushing. And i do like twice the pride double the fall, in answer to Hayden’s pathetic dialogue about growing in power.

Anakin comes off a pushover, a weak pathetic cartoon whiny wimp. That is Vader the guy who David Prowse made you fear. with his physicality. and augmented with JEJ voice. and John Williams epic march for villainy.

Not to derail the thread or go off on a tangent but I wanted suited Vader hunting down and destroying the Jedi, Jedi purge style. Vader kicking ass. I did not get that in the prequel or Anakin was man of zeal and a good friend, a good starpilot or a cunning warrior.

I prefer the account in Return of the Jedi’s novelization of how Anakin fell to the dark side. The slow seduction to evil, choosing the quick and easy path. Kenobi’s pride and hubris in thinking he could train him as well as Yoda might have.

Vader is a weak willed person, I think, that’s why he’s the Emperor’s lapdog.

I disagree nearly entirely. I think Dooku has more character in his bare bones vague like ten minutes of Attack Of The Clones than Kylo has in the entire ST. Dooku has motive, a backstory (vague in showcase, but solid in concept I think), personal pathos, charm, wit, a goal, and an actual connection to one of the main characters that I think carry’s weight. As far as I think, Kylo is a black hole of a character, with little to none of that.

Kylo’s motivation is muddied and makes no sense, and him being tricked by Sidious to think he is talking to Vader as a voice in his head is stupid. You think Anakin would have shown up a force ghost and been like hey kid I was redeemed. Or maybe Luke would have told him. Or his mom. It made no damn sense.

I understand the general gist he is supposed to be Hayden Skywalker 2.0 and wants to be Darth Vader. Down to the general whininess and smashing stuff. And the bad boy Emo. And toxic romance with Rey to mirror Padme and Anakin. Darth Caedus in the EU was already that. The 2.0 Anakin and Vader. That is why I hated that series. Redoing the prequel. Though Mara’s Jade’s murder as sacrifice is probably an indirect inspiration for Han Solo’s death.

Show me the darkness grandfather, I’m going to finish what you started. Kylo kills his father who loved him for no reason.

Luke was afraid, he saw Vader in him as he saw Vader in himself.

Rey being an analogue for Luke as the replacement hero, fine but they did nothing with it except have his exact story path at the end. Instead of redeeming Vader its redeeming Kylo and adopting the Skywalker lineage. And she is set to rebuild the Jedi order he failed to rebuild.

We don’t know why it failed except for Ben Solo. Did Luke follow the prequel Jedis failures. We only get a sense of that from Luke’s speech in the Last Jedi. He continued the same mistakes as Kenobi, the same hubris.

All the conceits of the Last Jedi that the Jedi were wrong and the force is wider and deeper, light and dark. Abandoned for the stupidity of Rise of Skywalker. Poorly adapting Dark Empire. And partially redoing Return of the Jedi.

You can follow on Last Jedi and stick the landing perhaps with a decent episode 9. But how do you explain the resistance only being big enough to fit in the Millennium Falcon. And ROS was nothing but bunch of course correction and retcons.

I like the idea of Finn as a rogue stormtrooper and a potential Jedi who could lead a Stormtrooper rebellion. I like the idea of Rey as a scavenger. And they did nothing with these concepts. Those two characters could have been written to be so much more. I also liked the idea of Rey as something pure and like someone who only does good. I didn’t like the forced darkness added to her character or the Palpatine backstory. I’m fine with the general idea of her being tempted by the dark side in The Last Jedi. Did she need to be a Skywalker I thought she was, but Rian had the novel idea she was a nobody. An everywoman to do away with the prequel concept of a magic mutant bloodline. The Reylo aspect would have to go away if they were related, I wasn’t partial to it anyway.

Nearly every issue I have with the Last Jedi could be solved with some story changes, fixing the pace of the film and adding needed exposition, I can’t say the same about The Force Awakens in a general sense. And the Rise of Skywalker or the Rise of Palpatine is worse than Attack of the Clones.

If I was in charge of the sequels I would have hewed to the OT and avoided the prequel entirely. Luke, Han and Leia would have actual real roles in the story. Not being some minor fulcrum for other characters or to be killed off.

Disney was right in not redoing the prequel, where they tripped themselves up was doing requels of the OT, instead of sequels where the characters and world progressed. But Darth Maul as the big bad would have been laughable, even the return of Palpatine is less stupid.

I would have liked to have seen the New Republic and the fragile balance of keeping the peace and watching Democracy actually be restored. And a successful Jedi order. Let’s says like a 100 Jedi or so. Luke as a Jedi Master and leader of all the Jedi’s.

Amazingly even in a different version you could still have a character like Rey as a student of Skywalker and a Finn. And there is no reason why Poe couldn’t be Rogue leader of Rogue Squadron after Wedge steps back. Rose Tico could be a mechanic or something along those lines and friendly with Finn and the Rogues. There is a million different ways the story could have gone.

The one major change I would make is to do away with the rules on attachment and Luke would have a wife and children. He would also have more nieces and nephews. Would there or should there have been new Sith. I’m more than half against having them at all or any random darksiders, I would have preferred a new enemy if possible. If Sith need be, it should be something new not the rule of two.

Perhaps we could have more than 2 or 3 lightsaber colors. If Sith need to exist don’t name them Darth. the only Darth should be Vader. I never liked that retcon. Its not Darth Exar-Kun or Darth Ulic- Qel Droma. As much as I like Kotor and Revan.

Very much this - and especially the bit about Andor!

I hope we see more like it again soon. An actual prequel trilogy (Andor S1, S2n & R1 / Andor, R1, & Solo) that is very much worth watching again and again (and hopefully Andor Season 2 gets a 4K release soon). 👍

I’ve kinda joked about this in the past, but if Rey fell for Dooku’s offer to turn I think I could kinda buy it. It’d be a little off to me, but Dooku has charm, pathos and an actual thing to offer Rey. This is another reason why I think ST is just a poorer, to me, rip off of the OT and can’t even remotely reach even the flawed PT: The movies have Kylo offer Rey a chance to turn twice and, well, because Kylo has no connection to Rey in any meaning I think, Rey naturally rejects it because who cares? I think it’s mostly just all about Kylo wanting, not about Rey as a character.

When Dooku asks Obi to join him, Dooku is offering him something, a goal to destroy the sith, information about the corruption of the Senate, and mutual connection to Qui-Gon.

When Palpatine asks Anakin to join him, Palpatine offers Anakin a way to hold on to his attachments, fuels his ego, power and more directly a way to keep his wife.

Even when Vader asks Luke to join him, he offers Luke something, ending the destructive conflict of the war, bringing order to the galaxy and familial attachment in a connection with his dad, which Luke has been valuing this whole time. Vader’s plan was even to keep someone Luke cared about as a hostage I think seemingly.

The ST so meaningless and empty and Kylo is so braindead stupid of a character with no meaningful anything to him, and I think the movie sexist, all the movie can even think to do is write him with some random nonsense romantic gibberish with Rey where he just stamps his foot, tells her her parents abandoned her and spouts some nonsense about just getting rid of everything, none of which effects Rey in her pursuits at all I think, except the romance part of course where she cries for him not to go this way. But even the movie grasps Rey has no reason to side with him over that, especially considering it just began like yesterday.

Now if Dooku offered Rey an end to corruption in the galaxy, I could kinda buy her actually considering joining.

Aye, the Sequel Trilogy certainly needed more on that (re the state of the galaxy) - the grounding - and if it wasn’t going to address that in the films themselves… it likely needed to be told in more ancillary material (not just books & comics)… before, during, or even after the ST films themselves - sort of like the PT did with the 2003 Clone Wars; as ‘crazy fun’ as that was.

I think content such as the ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ by Steven Soderbergh could be a welcome addition to address that; a character story over his life etc - whilst also filling in the gaps many of us wanted to know more about. The director and Adam Driver both have the talent for that (with Driver going so far to state: “one of the coolest scripts I had ever been a part of”).

Steven Soderbergh Calls Disney “Insane” for Scrapping Ben Solo Star Wars Movie - Hollywood Reporter article.

A snippet…

“It was no surprise that [Kennedy] was frustrated,” Soderbergh said in an interview with BK Mag. “We were all frustrated. You know, that was two and a half years of free work for me and Adam and [writer] Rebecca Blunt. When Adam and I discussed him talking about it publicly, I said, ‘Look, do not editorialize or speculate about the why. Just say what happened, because all we know is what happened.’ The stated reason was, ‘We don’t think Ben Solo could be alive.’ And that was all we were told. And so there’s nothing to do about it, you know, except move on.”

Soderbergh continued: “I’d kind of made the movie in my head, and just felt bad that nobody else was going to get to see it. I thought the conversation was strictly going to be a practical one — where they go, what is this going to cost? And I had a really good answer for that. But it never even got to that point. It’s insane. We’re all very disappointed.”

The announced Rey movie(s) could also do that - though they likely have Rey’s own stories set / focused in the future (as far as I’ve read) - and who knows it they’ll ever actually materialise. I hope so; Daisy’s a fine actress and I’d like to see more of her in the GFFA.

And I say that anything with Kylo Ren as a focal point, to me, kill it with fire. That black hole that sucked all of the OT characters down with him, of a worthless character had it coming to only ever be made a joke out of and not pretend like he has anything of value to him as a character to me. The first mistake, to me, in this project, was in ever trying to make anything with him as a focus in the first place. He died, good riddance, to me.

It’s not much surprise that KK wanted this to me, what with what I see as seemingly her, I think, support of RJ’s TYLJ and it’s, I think, sexist portrayal of of Rey, and women in general, in the reylo romance among other things.

Scrapping this, to me, junk of a character was the most sane thing Disney did with with the ST character.

As previously stated to both you and Avimo, your repeated attempts at interactions to me have been described by others here as ‘stalkerish’, ‘harassing’, and ‘creepy’… and again… I’m inclined to agree.

Yet you both still continue.

So once again… please stop. Avimo too.

And then kindly both go back to wherever it is similar like-minded trolls and GL/PT zealots as you and Avimo usually hang out at - and spare the good members of this community any more of your repeated bad-faith circlejerking shitposts and continuing performative trolling.

Aye, even greatly experienced actors struggled with the Prequels - it is littered across that entire trilogy; with McDiarmid probably the one exception (to me he’s just having fun and hamming it up in his performance! 😃). The acting is something I didn’t find a problem with at all in the ST films - for me it was strength of this trilogy - though obviously not without other well known faults / shortcomings.
